Hey Everybody, I hope everything is going well back in the states. Caitlin and I have moved on from Romania, through Hungary and are now in Croatia. Budapest was a big and great city. Plenty to see and do...we stayed in a hostel that reminded me of Pitzer....a lot of hippies...the spirits were moving. Croatia has turned out to be a surprise stop for me on this trip. Zagreb is the perfect capitol city sporting nice parks around every corner and some tasty blackberries. Most impressive however was Plitvice national park. Only pictures can show how pristine and detailed the landscape is. The devil is in the details but its comprised of a bunch of sapphire pools and waterfalls. We are on our way to the small coastal towns in a few days. Ill write again ... read more

Geo: 44.122, 15.2381We are now in Zadar having spent a fabulous two days seeing various aspects of Croatia. We spent yesterday morning further exploring Zagreb, returning to some of the monuments of the Lower Town we had only seen from the bus. These included the National Theatre building in Tito square and the parks that form a green U around the city. We also went back to the markets which were now open and we browsed through the various stalls selling flowers, fruit and fish. I bought a beautiful hand embroidered table cloth for my back table which was not expensive. There were some lovely more modern sculptures in the town too, including one of an old lady I particularly liked. We had lunch at a cafe near the main square which was great. We left Zagreb about ... read more

Photos to come later - have a look at links or wikipedia for pictures. Mileage: ~4300 Our final excursion in Romania was recommended to us, the Berca Mud Volcanoes. Having no idea what to expect (the word "mud" was never used!), we arrived and found the volcanoes to be bubbling mud! While examining the strange natural phenomenon, Lucy managed to fall in the volcano, covering her right leg in mud up to her waist. How we laughed... After a lot of driving, getting the car fixed after its sluggishness, a campsite where and camping at a site where someones wedding reception was taking place(!), we made our way back through Romania and through Hungary towards Croatia. We had something of a fiasco at the border - they wouldn't let us in because our back numberplate had ... read more

Our 30 day rain-free streak was broken on Saturday as it started to spot as we stepped onto the boat in Zadar. Intermitent rain during the day turned to heavy rain overnight. The patter of rain on the deck invokes fond memories of vacations in England as a boy. Happy times. Our friends from Golden arrived on Saturday and will be crewing for the next two weeks. Zweigelt is a 38 foot Bavaria that we have chartered. In Europe a bare boat charter is exactly that. Bare boat. The rain-gear normally found on a North American charter boats is absent. On Sunday, in addition to the rain, the winds were 30-35 knots gusting to 50knts so we decided to spend the day moored to the dock in Zadar. When the shops opened at 0900 on Monday ... read more

The physical scars of war are not evident as we stroll around the traffic-free marble streets of Zadar's old town. Zadar has changed hands many times since it was first settled by Illystrians in the 9th century BC and traces of successive inhabitants are to be found everywhere and displayed with pride. One would never suspect that 60% of its buildings were destroyed by allied bombing in WWII and that Zadar was under siege by the Serbs after the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1993. The economic scars of war that you might expect are also conspicuously absent. On the contrary, many of the monuments in Zagreb are either newly renovated or under re-construction. There are new impressive highways and the economy seems to be thriving. Maybe reconstruction after the war has accelerated urban renewal resulting in ... read more

We left Zagreb on the 06:50 train and thought we would miss our connection to Zadar because we arrived at Knin 25 minutes late, however the train was waiting for us and so we arrived in Zadar as planned in the early afternoon. The trains took us through green, hilly countryside and past little stations in the middle of nowhere that have not yet been repaired from Croatia's most recent war. The temperatures in Croatia are unseasonably warm and feel very pleasant to us after Egypt. The picture shows some excavations by the five wells in the old town of Zadar. When we were here two years ago it was a small hole in the ground. Now it fills the square so that traffic can no longer drive through. We are not sure what the next ... read more

Well hello Blogettes. It is with a heavy heart that I am writing my blog this morning. It is the morning of the 10th of May and we are sitting inside the Astra Yachting section of Marina Dalmajica and we have to leave the boat in a couple of hours. We arrived here last night, opting to have our last night in the marina; get the boat fuelled up and fill her with water and have a chance to get packed up, and organised in some form of orderly fashion rather than a last minute panic and *^$% fight. Taking up from Split; the washing wasn’t finished until 12.00 noon but it was worth the wait. Nice clear plastic wrapped packages of sparkling fresh and clean clothes were picked up from the laundrette and I’ve got ... read more

Hello Everyone, Just a very quick hello to say we are now on the boat, had a long but enjoyable bus trip yesterday and arrived late last night. Spent the night on the boat and the day going into the markets and provisioning her. The boat is beautiful. We have our crew caps courtesy of Lloyd, Angelic, Rubes and Phoebe as well as our special Pirate boarding party suit courtesy of Mick, Trace, Herb, Di & Laurie so we have most bases covered. We are also flying the aussie flag and listening to John Williamson!!! Catch you all soon. Lots of ... read more

We knew we weren’t in London any more when our plane landed in a paddock and the police had the traffic stopped as our pilot drove the plane across a road to the terminal! We arrived in Zadar on Monday night the 24th September for the beginning of our two week trip around Croatia. We headed straight for our hostel to drop off our bags before heading off to try our first local pivo (beer) and check out Borik, the area of Zadar we were staying in. The hostel was right across from a big marina and just near a nice little beach. A nice change from London. The next morning after our delicious dry bread breakfast (and some weird meat paste….) we headed to the old town of Zadar for a look around. The bus ... read more
