We decided to Split, Split and head further up the coast to Zadar. Bing had read in the lonely planet that Zadar is the place to see and a good base for exploring the islands. Unfortunately, they were both wrong..but that's ok. Zadar had an even more menacing entrance than Split, (which is REALLY saying something) We were advised that the place to stay was Borik which we decided to repronounce as Borat, cause it was easier and we are enjoying making fun of the locals. Borik/Borat was by the sea and quite nice although it has only got a pebble beach. Fortunately for Zadar, it does have one really nice feature, a long promenade which allowed us to walk all the way around to the old town. (about 3 kms) btw, my Teva's really honk ... read more

Well it's been a while between blog entries! I've been out of touch as cruising the Croatian coast & islands for 7 days & then heading to a national park so a little out of touch.... My last blog entry finished with us arriving in Zadar. I was still quite ill from the bout of food poisoning I picked up in Venice and so spend the first day or so recuperating in our hotel in Zadar. After the dive we stayed in in Venice, this one had air con, mini bar, big beds and a balcony with a view of amazing sunsets. It was a palace in comparison! Zadar isn't that well known and to be honest we may not have gone there had the ferry not arrived there from Venice. However, there is heaps ... read more

My town! By every meaning. Zadar is an old, old town, dating waaaay back in past. There's proof of stone age cultures living in this area, and it's got the name from an ancient Mediterranean people living here: Jadera - Zadar. In 8th century b.c. it was inhabitated by Ilirian tribes, in 7th and 6th century b.c. it was already important center of Liburns, great sailors, to whom Zadar was a harbour and starting point of many journeys, specially with Greek colonies. Throughout the centuries it was a site to many battles, from Romans, through Bizantium to Venets, and then to Austro-Hungarians, Italians, Germans, and the latest - ourselves (ex. Yugoslavia war). As far as art is considered, the main characteristic of this area is romanesque art, but signs of time b.c. are still visible, ... read more

After a hot night sleeping in the cargo hold in the van, we woke up at 630 as the boat started pulling into Split harbor. After staking in the beautiful view we jumped in the van and confronted passport control who though it would be a good idea to search the van lol, so after a 15min search of the van we got our passports stamped and we were off. After filling up with cheap gas(about 73 UK cents a liter) we found a great parking spot and went for our first swim in Croatia, it was refreshing but very nice once we were in:) And I have to comment that the Croatian girls are some of the hottest I have seen anywhere!! And so many of them, it put Paris to shame. After that ... read more

Geo: 44.0964, 15.1865This morning I packed up and left the beautiful, peaceful island. I caught the bus to Stari Grad, only 15 minutes away and then caught the ferry back to Split. Once in Split I had some time to get some lunch and then settle in for my bus journey. After a three hour bus ride, I arrived in Zadar. At the bus station I was greeted by my relatives. My mother and her family were born in this town and left when she was a young child. Three of my grandmothers sisters live here with their families. At the bus station was Uncle Pero (one of my grandmother's sister's (Etta) husband), Aunt Mila (my grandmother's sister, who is such a splitting image of my grandmother!!) and Iva and Sime- Etta and Pero's grandchildren. They ... read more

Geo: 44.0584, 15.2916Waiting for my laundry to dry ... 7 Euros for laundry and no dryer! Turns out that they have one but apparently don't want to use it for guests' laundry. They air dried it all night and dried it in the machine for 15 minutes because they knew I was in a rush to leave. Then they left my laundry bag in the washroom ... had to wait a while for someone to finish showering before I could get it. Was worried that I would miss my bus but it turned out fine. Hopped the tram to the bus station. Good tram system in many ways but bad for tourists. It's crowded so you can't see where you are going and they don't announce any of the stop names. Almost walked into an open ... read more

Hello! We are now in Zadar in Dalmatia. More specifically, we are staying in Bibinje - a small village south of Zadar. It is a nice little seaside village, with little in the way of infastructure, but lots in the way of cheap produce (although I can't say the same for the meat - we had some of the worst sausages of our life the other day!). We are staying with a Croatian couple who spend part of each year in Australia, so speak good English and can explain the workings of the place to us. No complaints at all - apart from perhaps the location, next to the village church, which means that it chimes on the hour throughout the night (although we're used to that now...) We have also spent three days in Pula, ... read more
