I could write an entire blog about my travel experience from Bangkok to Zagreb. Five airports (Bangkok, Dubai, Budapest, Munich, Zagreb), 24 hours, and a couple of a-holes next to me in business class from Dubai to Budapest. "Ugh! These seats are like child's seats!" "Ew. This tomato soup is disgusting! Take it away!" Seriously, I don't get how some people live with themselves… I was able to spend a lot of time with a former flight attendant this week and it was very interesting to get her take on the behavior of passengers; needless to say, she was in agreement with me about the couple next to me. Anyway, the reason I came to Zagreb was to celebrate the wedding of my coworker and friend, Zoran, to his lovely girlfriend Anja. I am sure it ... read more

I was so happy to see one of the items on my bucket list. On our way from Zagreb to Split, our friends took us to this beautiful national park with the stepped lakes and waterfalls, crystal clear blue waters, and stunning scenery. I was so excited for this. It is not a direct route, so we had taken the long way through the countryside. Fay and I were able to get to know the 8th member of our party, Marko. He is definitely talkative and the life of the party. He recommended a stop for lunch at this cute little spot near the park, Rastoke, where he said they had the best fish. The fish did not disappoint. I was still full from our brunch, but I tried it - when in Rome, right? Who ... read more

Onto the bus for a tour of the town with a local guide. We drive the lower end with commentary then head up the hill to the top of the high part of town where we walk. Very ordered grid streets in the lower part, but the high part is like Sydney, streets going in all directions. Lots of old buildings again, then we get to St Marks church. This has a roof of coloured ceramic tiles with 2 symbols, one of the local area the other the Croatian flag. Stunning effect. Wander through alleys, little squares, and lots of views down into the main square. We see one building where they had painted windows on the 1st level walls. The guide said that someone must have wanted some fresh air, so they painted a few ... read more

Wake up to the sound of running water from the lakes and waterfalls. Very peaceful. breakfast is much better than last nights meal, and an added bonus. One of the Tennessee ladies (family of 5 women travelling with us - more on them later) has found my missing bag lock from last night. The world is in harmony again...... Meet our guide (who Viktor later told us her name translated to Snow White or something like that - didn't quite fit the body though). This walk went to the lower lakes just as pretty but much busier with 2 waynfoot traffic. No real chance/time to stop too much as you were being pushed from behind all the time. Lots of pretty sights all the same. Finally get back up to the top when Viktor announce we ... read more

When I returned from Ljubljana I thought a lot about possible changes in my plans. It was evident that I was running the risk of staying in Split (planned for the 13thof July, return bus tickets bought in advance) for the whole day (or maybe the bus company would not have a return trip on the same day!) so I quickly decided to cancel the trip to Split and find a closer city for a half-day visit. Having arrived from Ljubljana, I entered the bus station and asked whether it was possible to refund my tickets. Thankfully, they returned the whole money minus a 10% withdrawal. I was perfectly happy with that and went to the hostel. I opened the Google maps and scanned the vicinities, reading about several nearby cities in Slovenia, Croatia, and even ... read more

Breakfast today was quite good again, bacon cooked properly. Sarajevo didn't have bacon as it is mainly Muslim territory so no pork..... Skyped Jessica and Charlie when we got up. Pippa was asleep. When they answered we said good morning to Charlie. He advised us that is the afternoon, but we told him that we were on the other side of the world and it was 0630 for us - yes, Chris is getting up early.... Unfortunately the Internet connection for Jessica was a bit dodgy, too much wind around in Mildura. Just about to hang up when Pippa woke up from her afternoon sleep. Got to say hiPelli to her even though she was yawning, a bit like us. stephanie was hosting a baby shower so we didnt get to chat with her. Later maybe. ... read more

July 11 I came to Zagreb from Belgrade on the 11th of July. The bus departed at 11-30 and arrived at about 16-30 to Zagreb’s main bus station. Though the location of my hostel was quite close to the station I failed to find it easily at first because I had photographed the map on my phone with poor quality and was unable to discern the street’s name. However, I went in the correct direction right from the start. I tried to find a newspaper stand or something like that to buy a map. Of course I had better take a map from the train station or the bus station right after my arrival, but the thought didn’t cross my mind. I bought a very expensive map near the train station, instead of taking a free ... read more

This was our last morning in Zagreb – Stacey started the day by getting the rental car, or more accurately, she met with the person from the rental car agency who personally delivered the car and explained how to drive in Croatia. We thought we were getting an Audi or BMW, but instead we got a Peugeot – it has a lion as an emblem. This was apparently a free upgrade – brand new and much bigger car than we were supposed to get. Thank you Pat and Ellie Brennan!!Meanwhile, James discovered Zagreb is not so great for running. He got in another visit of the Promenade and a park in the city before heading back to meet up with Stacey. We set off, back to Aida, for strudels. It was late morning, so they only ... read more
