21 April 2015 Tuesday. After the huge breakfast which was also enough to make sandwiches for lunch, Mike and I proceeded the couple kilometers to Entrance 1 to the Plitvici Lakes National Park. The park, founded in 1949, is composed of sixteen lakes with travertine rock waterfalls between each one. Interestingly, the first shots of the Croatian – Yugoslav War we fired here on Easter Sunday in 1991…on such a holy day and in such a beautiful park the war’s first casualty was a park policeman. This has got to be a definition of evil. At the information center they provided advice as to which trails were open; the others being flooded due to the spring runoff or under repair as the boardwalks can deteriorate. We decided to take the cave access to the lower lakes ... read more

So, the more time I spend here, the more I like it - Zagreb, Croatia, Europe, take your pick. I'm sad that I won't get to explore any more of Croatia on this trip, but that's what futures are for. I haven't done much today - the Mimara Museum, the Zoo, and more fun at the grocery store. But my legs started to get tired, so I came back to my room for a siesta. It's Sunday, so most of this town has also taken the day off. On a different note, I have now been gone from America for a month, so it seems like a fitting time to reflect on some of my favorite and least favorite experiences since I've been gone. Just a recap of today before I get to the lists: I ... read more
I think this was a Reubens work, at Mimara
They advertised Renoir at the Mimara, but this was the only one I found. So, I guess they weren't lying.

I got more time around Zagreb than I expected, which is a good thing. To the dismay of Lejla, and probably of Haris, too, I'm not going to make it to Dalmatia, the coastal region of Croatia. Blame it on my poor timing (I need to be in Budapest on Monday) and the horrible train/bus routes and times between the coast and Budapest. I'm sorry, but I'm not spending 20+ hours on a bus or train in one day. I hadn't planned on leaving Slovenia this morning at all. In fact, my plan was to take the bus/train around 12:30PM. But I woke up around 7:30 and thought I might be able to catch the 8:30 train to Zagreb. I showered and shoved everything in the suitcase, checked out, and made my way to the train ... read more

Some recovery time was required for our first day off the boat. After having breakfast with the Busabout group on the Saturday morning, we said our goodbyes and we ('the sisters' as we were often referred to) went to pick up our laundry. (There was this awesome little laundromat in Split that washes, dries and folds your clothes for really cheap!!) Took a while before we could check in at our B&B - they had a couple of famous Croatian actors staying in our room and the owner didn't want to pressure them to leave on time. We waited in their pretty little garden and used the ever important wifi. Once finally inside, we treated ourselves to several hours of lying on our beds and watching cable tv. Georgia realised that some of her laundry was ... read more

Zagreb is certainly different to Dubrovnik and Split. It is a big city that is very similar to Melbourne..The tram system is very good and costs 10 kuna for 90 mins of travel. Wine is also so cheap here too...8 kunas for a glass of wine which is $1.60 Aus. The apartment we are staying in is nice and at first we thought we were staying in a housing commission area but this is what all of Zagreb is like. Lots of run down apartment blocks, heaps of corner stores called konzum, and lots and lots of pubs and cafes..I have come to the conclusion that the people over here dont cook much they eat out alot and must drink a shitload of beer...It is just so cheap to eat out and buying groceries is actually ... read more

During our stay in Croatia, we decided to book a trip to a place called Plitvice Lakes. We didn't know much about this place, only what we had been told by the lady who was selling the excursion. We were shown some photo's and it looked incredible, beautiful lakes with turquoise water, multiple waterfalls and amazing greenery! We couldn't wait to arrive there and explore. It was an early start for the tour, we were picked up by a private driver who drove us into the city of Zadar where we got the coach from. We were advised that as we were going quite high up into the mountains it can get quite cold, and sometimes be raining. Ooops i hadn't planned for any other weather than sunshine so i had to treat myself to a ... read more

I arrive in Zagreb via overnight train from Frankfurt. I was not knowing what to expect for this trip. I do not have much experience in Eastern Europe, and I also have never used the Croatian currency Kuna. I had to familiarize myself with this, but this really should not be an issue. It was sprinkling rain when I arrived, and I had to find my hostel from the train station. I knew the instructions said it was about a fifteen minute walk, so I tried to keep whatever covered and dry as I possibly could and away I go. The instructions say to go towards the cathedral, and I see it in the distance for it looks really tall, so that is the direction I walk in. I make it to the cathedral, and the ... read more

Today was our last day in Croatia. We met for breakfast in our hotel at 9. From there we headed to the shortest funicular railway in the world as we made our way to Gornji Grad. We visited St. Mark' Church and the area where Matej Gubec was executed in 1573. We then made our way through the Old Stone Gate and eventually to the Dolac Market. It is like no other market I have seen. Although the Split market is quite large, i don't think there was anything this larger market didn't have. We loaded up on jabuke, maline, jagode, i kupine. Some also bought some decorative jewelry boxes. From there we made our way to the Cathedral. Shockingly, it is still under construction. I don't think I have been here when it was not ... read more

We left the coast for good today. We had to stop early into our trip to take a picture of the photogenic town of Primošten. Then it was off to Letinac. Although Lika was not on out list of destinations originally, I was not going to drive by Letinac and Brinje and be the person to decide NOT to let dad see family. It was really worth it as we spent a good hour at Letinac. Nevenka looked good even though she has not been feeling well lately. A little cheese, crackers, and rakija later, we bid Nevenka farewell and we were off to Brinje. We thought Mike had gotten lost on the way. We had to turn around to go to try to find him. Little did we know that he had left his iPad ... read more
