Woolly says – Jumping down from the tram and finding a most impressive sculpture is always a good start to the day. There in front of me on his plinth stood Count Jelacic on his deadly steed with a sword so pointy and sharp that it could poke your eye out, not that I would be getting that close to the fighting end of it of course! The count's image has inspired a number of political outbursts, in 1947 it was dismantled and chucked into a corner somewhere because leaders found it overly representative of nationalism in the country until 1990 when it was brought it back into its current place, this time leaders believing it perfectly nationalistic. I just thought he was wonderful, leaving Jo with the camera I went off to start my investigations ... read more

I don't remember where I first heard about Lake Plitvice, but it has been on my list for a while. My mother's trip was perfect excuse to go there. I decided to spend 2 nights at the lake to give us enough time to enjoy the lakes and relax. We stayed at Guesthouse Sven - it is about 5 min walk from the Entrance 1, great location and nice house. We had a room which balcony from where we could see part of a waterfall. It was a nice stay. We reached there around 5:15pm. After settling in we decided to take a stroll to the park and enquire about what to do. The park was quite close at this time, and no information. Next day morning we started early at 7:00am to enjoy the park ... read more

We arrived in Zagreb at 11:00pm by train from Vienna. Border crossing into Croatia was easy, no issues with Swiss resident permit and Schengen visa. I had taken a apartment 5min walking from the train station - Carla Studio Apartment. The very nice owner was waiting there for us to hand over the keys. Nice apartment, though we would spend just the night there and leave early in the morning. Today's plan was to see a couple of small museums and then off to Lake Plitvice at 15:00. First stop - Museum of Illusions. It is a small museums with games and some optical illusion exhibits. The entry of 40Kuna is a bit steep for such a small place, but we enjoyed it very much. Time spent - 1 hr. Next stop - Museum of Croatian ... read more

How can three weeks on a motor-bike fly by, in the blink of an eye? Very easily when you're having as much fun as we've just had! Finally the sun came out to play, and we enjoyed a magnificent ride along the Adriatic Coast, from Dubrovnik to Split in temperatures which ranged from 20 to 30 degrees. The sea was the highly anticipated azure blue, roads were dry, and the riding exhilarating. On our arrival at our hotel in Split, champagne on ice awaited us, and we celebrated a safe journey, with Rozle Verhovc and the Clutch Moto Tours team. A journey which took us to places we never imagined, and on a fascinating history lesson we never envisaged. How did we get here?! I've sometimes had to pinch myself, that I was having so much ... read more

Geo: 45.8069, 15.9614From the outset, we knew this day would be "wasted" as we had to cover nearly 400 miles to drive from Dubrovnik up to the Croatian capital city of Zagreb, where we'd spend the night. It turns out, though, that this "day on the bus" came at the perfect time, as most people (ourselves included) were tired from nearly a week of constant travel and sightseeing. We now had an opportunity to sit back, enjoy the view, read, sleep, talk, catch-up on Facebook....whatever. We had our earliest departure of the formal tour, with the bus departing the hotel at 7:45am sharp. Turns out there are scheduled passenger buses with numerous stops that depart Dubrovnik at 8:00am, and our driver was seeking (and succeeded) in getting on the road ahead of them. The sandstorm of ... read more

Well. I haven't blogged in a long time. In fact, I wouldn't consider previous attempts "blogs". Pities or plights, perhaps; not blogs. Nevertheless, I'm a student of English and aspiring author so I'll post this for a laugh (at my expense) because It's not really about anything useful. We'll call it "My First Blog" or "The Croatian Hard-On" Let's talk Croatia. What a wonder. What a beautiful place; beautiful people, culture, history, scenery, the list goes on ... If you have never been then I could not recommend it enough. I find it hard to explain to people who ask me "Why Croatia?", "Why Croatia again"? I think for Irish people, backpackers passing through and package holidays to Dubrovnik aside, it's an unusual place to go. Only recently have direct flights become available, and the typical ... read more

Geo: 44.7804, 15.6349Okay folks we made it to Croatia yesterday and Handsome Pop's most anticipated location today, although there are several only a smidgen behind. We sit here composing the blog listening to our kids' favorite songs (Cotton Fields and King of the Road) on an iPhone speaker. We're sure they will be pleased.Oh the lakes, what can one say? We imagine there were 10-12 levels of lakes, although Bird recalls seeing 16 somewhere. The lakes maintain different elevations, thus there are waterfalls between them, many appearing to flow from the ground. At some locations the water falls from crescents. The water is crystal clear. We thought water in the Caribbean was clear, but here the bottom reaches up to you. However, at least in the Caribbean, it is level where here we were constantly walking ... read more

PLIVITCKA JEZERA not yet This is a very peaceful place in a peaceful country. Not much to report for readers who like to hear about the cut and thrust of adventure seeking travellers . We are having a bit of a respite and killing time before heading back to Shengen Europe. We want to continue our travels in la belle Francais. We are camped on the banks of the Mreznica River. Here are some pictures of the place where we are camped. Lots of families here and kids enjoy the river. Unlike many other Croatian campgrounds which are inhabited by mainly German visitors this one is pretty much a Dutch only camp. They are surprised to see someone in a French camping car, who then speaks English. Its great to have so many nice people around. ... read more
