I needed a foot massage after walking all day in Plitvice Lakes National Park. Not sure what are more impressive; the Lakes or the interconnecting waterfalls. The 16 Lakes are dammed by travertine which grows at a rate of 1cm per year by the integration of plants, bacteria, water and air. It took just over 5 hours to walk along the lake-edge paths and boardwalks constructed between the Lakes on top of the travertine dams with water rushing beneath your feet at times. The Karst topography is also home of many caves, sinkhole and underground rivers. Truly fascinating!... read more

Last night sailing down the Adriatic we reached Croatia. The Dalmatian Coast is beautiful, dotted with many little islands. One of the larger islands (still quite small) is Trogir. Trogir is connected to the mainland by a bridge and to another island by a second bridge. No one lives on Trogir because it is too expensive and their is no place to park. Trogir was founded in the 3rd century BC by the Greeks. It was then inhabited by the Roman and then became a part of the Byzantine Empire. In 1420 the Venetians moved in and stayed until 1797. It only takes about one hour to explore the whole city. The streets are narrow and cobbled. There is a main square where there is a 15th century clock tower and a cathedral. The cathedral is ... read more

Our Cosmos tour of Croatia, Slovenia and Bosniaer Herzegovina was described as ‘active’ which was pretty accurate. It was bookended by two natural wonders, the Postojna Caves in Slovenia and the Plitvice National Park in Croatia. Both visits were a sensory overload, with visual splendours so impressive you can’t quite grasp they are real and not some giant digitally enhanced 3D projection. We’ve ignored cave tours in other countries as NZ’s Waitomo complex has a reputation for being world standard. Waitomo is wonderful, but Postojna is something else – 25km of cavernous sculptural wonderland. First you are taken on an open train through 5 km of the cave system, Indiana Jones style with minimal OSH warnings – we all ducked reflexively anyway as it raced around corners, overhangs and stalagmite formations at a speed and proximity ... read more

I was really dreading this trip... Actually when we were looking into coming to Bosnia this trip and the one from Kotor to Mostar, were the two trips that made me a bit unsure about going to Bosnia at all... Since we did manage to turn the 9hour Kotor-Mostar journey into a 3hour one, we were hoping we would survive this loooong journey as well... 6+ hours... Still didn't like the sound of that though... We had some assigned seats but decided not to use them and took some other ones with way more leg room... We got some looks from a couple that walked into the bus later on, guessing we took their seats? But hey, the bus wasn't full and they got the same kind of seat right next to us, so hopefully no ... read more

Day 247 Wednesday 21st September 2016 – Zadar to Zagreb Early start, and out of bed and packing our bags. Shelley not happy about moving and I think she could just about nest in Zadar except the town is heading for winter and the first hint of cold and she would be out of here. Had breakfast at the café around the corner and then completed our packing and marched the twenty minutes to the bus station. Had to check out of our apartment before 10 and our bus wasn’t till 11.30 so we had a nice long wait for our bus. The journey to Zagreb went without a hitch along an incredibly well built freeway with lots of bridges and tunnels, one of which was over 5 kilometres long. Got to Zagreb at ... read more

With the clouds clearing, a picnic packed and the bus dropping us off in a forest we were all looking forward to a day at the lakes. Woolly says – Hmmm lakes equal water, not good with my allergy! I do however like looking at lakes and love the Lake District in Britain with it’s miles of walks and peace and quiet, the two thousand tourists queuing at the ticket desk suggested that this set of lakes might be a bit different! Leaving Zoe and myself to pay (something you don’t do in the Lake District) the small furry one disappeared from sight through the hoards that were surrounding us. Woolly says – well why wait in a queue I have servants to do that! Having battled my way through the masses I sat and waited ... read more

Woolly says – Sometimes you have to grab your opportunities with both paws and when it’s FREE even the women found no argument with an evening in Zagreb. Leaping off the tram I glanced back to make sure that my party was following, first find the venue and then search for food, for a mammoth of my capabilities that should be easy! Venue found and possible piece of grass to sit on identified, now onto food, I looked round and spotting some umbrellas trotted over to see what the menu offered.....lots of drinks but nothing edible. The three of us stood looking for something to drop from the sky as Jo acknowledged that the King Tomislav Square area of the city was missing a trick in not having a single place to eat. We’re stood by ... read more

Woolly says – My plan for the day was to be a little different, I ignored the girls sighs and raised eyebrows telling them that they would enjoy it! Our map had told me that our first port of call was out of the city although a five minute tram ride didn’t really feel that out of it and as I stared up at the large wooden buildings I rubbed my paws in glee. It’s not that we didn’t want to go but I just knew there would be problems..... well with my small companion and the opportunity to press buttons anything could happen! Woolly says – Hopefully there would be lots of buttons for my paws to engage with! My information had said ‘The Technical Museum, established in 1954 in Zagreb, follows in the tradition ... read more

You have to love the mammoth when he tries to help, except for the amount of cleaning up afterwards which far surpasses the help given! Woolly says – Some people are so ungrateful, it wasn’t my fault that I had slipped in the butter and that the knife wouldn’t cut the cheese into anything other than rocks and I’m blaming the mice for the state of the bread! As I sat licking the mayonnaise off my paws Jo finished our picnic lunch and collected the many things that we seem to need on a day to day basis. A little cloudy overhead but warm, well actually very warm and rather muggy but that didn’t put me off our trip for the day. Having completed our bus and tram route which we all seem to know by ... read more

Woolly says – I had only been out of the apartment for five minutes when I saved a life! Ok well I helped to save a life......well I shouted encouragement as Zoe saved a life. Taking her life into her hands she raced across the road to pick up the little guy who was gamely trying to cross over, holding him tenderly she put him into the shady depths of a bush and we watched happily as the small tortoise hurried off into the grass. The Croatian lady who had watched our sterling performance grinned at us and let us onto the bus first, who says doing something nice doesn’t pay dividends! As he discussed bravery medals for Zoe and her efforts we changed onto a tram and as Jelacic Square came into view he seemed ... read more
