The taxi at the bus station knew exactly where Hostel Mostel was located (right down the street in Makedonia square). He had a meter and knew where he was going, so I figured I'd go for it. But, the meter basically just kept running at .02 leva every 2 seconds it seemed and didn't pause when we stopped at the lights. So, I was pretty sure it was sketch. The hostel posted that a fair price would be 6 leva from the bus station. It ended up being 10.08 leva. The thing is I was already planning on giving him 10 Leva, because I had heavy bags etc. So, I feel like these guys would be so much better off if they didn't cheat people. They'd feel good and the visitors would feel good and they'd ... read more

Don’t ever go to Sofia. Seriously. I don’t know if it was because I came from some stunning scenery in Macedonia or that I hadn’t gotten much sleep on the train during the night, but I thought it was an absolute dump. I only had a day there so wanted to take in as much as possible, only there wasn’t anything to see. I think I spent more time in Starbucks (I think it was the first one ever as they were giving out free stuff, and looked brand new) than I did outside. Half the roads are being torn up, there are no real monuments (maybe one), the parks are dirt, and after dark people try to rob you at the train station. That last bit was kind’ve interesting as there was this guy who ... read more

Beck and I were excited to go to Veliko Tarnovo, it looked exciting and intriguing and pretty! Our hoste arranged a pick up for us from the station. When we got there a Japanese couple insisted on pushing our way into our taxi because all the other taxi drivers were ''dangerous'' apparently. So our taxi driver took them, of course annoying all the other drivers waiting at the station because they wanted the business. So we squashed in and our taxi driver took them to their hotel where they made a scene in the street because they only had euros, which of course the driver couldn't take. The woman was literally screaming at him. The sad thing is I know those people will go home to Japan and tell everyone how horrible Bulgaria is. Bulgaria isn't ... read more

It was night-time in Sofia and Cvetko and I boarded a dimly lit crusty orange-coloured tram. It was full of old age pensioners sat glumly on seats staring morosely at me and my large backpack whilst Cvetko explained the low-down on Sofia (basically, don’t fuck the gypsies). We had the apartment to ourselves as Cvetko’s parents were away on holiday so I was set up in his parents’ bedroom. Cvetko then began to make us something to eat - grilled herbed sausage with salad - delicious and downed wit copious amounts of Menta (мента) a peppermint liqueur that is mixed with Sprite and is bright green - Cvetko’s favourite. We stayed up talking into the night about the English twats I’d met at the Spirit of Burgas - and I thought about how generous and open ... read more

With my backpack on I walked alongside the tatty train on the station platform looking for a word or number that I could read. I still couldn’t read a bloody thing in Cyrillic - despite it only taking about ‘an hour with a beer to learn’ according to the Lonely Planet at least. So I climbed aboard the train and loitered in the gangway looking up and down for a conductor. The interior of the train was fairly modern with fairly modern seating but they were all occupied byt hot-looking people. It was stuffy inside, there was no air-conditioning and the only cooling ventilation was provided by open windows. The conductor eventually came along and looked at my ticket - I asked for a seat number - but he didn’t point to anywhere and moved on ... read more

Bloody French Air Traffic Controllers, complaining because they have to move retirement from 60 to 62, sack therm all I say, as it's causing me chaos. Have been in 3 countries since I last wrote. Morroco, Hot, smellly, dirt, smelly, clossed (Ramadan), smelly. Every person you meet is trying to con you or sell you drugs. Also seem to be the angriest people I have encountered, everyone is arguing or shouting at each other, must have something to do with not being akle to eat of drink all day. Hung out at the Ramada Hotel with all the other Europeans, it was like seige mentality. Went to a Morrocan Dentist to get my crownput back and he has damaged it beyond repair, magic. Met some nice people, especially a Norwegian guy who is renting me his ... read more

Just a quick update as I see to have found the only available computer in Sofia. Managed to get here by flying over Serbia. Flight problem solved by booking through an agency. Macedonia was OK but the Hotel was ancient, built in 1923 and not been touched since, still with the original staff. Tempatures on Sunday reached 46 degrees, I've never experienced heat like it. Luckly McDonalds was air conditioned so it was a matter of keep bringing me food, I'm here for the day :-). Slightly scary moment on the way to the airport when the driver stoped to let a guy in the back of the taxi at 03.00am carrying a gun, thankfully he was a policeman on his way to starting duty at the airport. Arrived in Sofia and it has great buildings ... read more

As they used to say of the roach motel “you can check in but you cant check out.” In Istanbul it seems it is easier to check out than check in. After a few days to orient myself to the place and the fact my sister lives in the western suburbs and I was heading west, it was a breeze compared to the arrival nightmare. So I was off across the peninsula that effectively connects Europe to Asia in the south. The waters of the Sea of Marmara were off to the left. Almost an inland sea it connects to the Agean Sea which then connects to the Mediteranean. I never did (or have) seen the Black Sea which was somewhere off to the right and somehow registers as a big disappointment. Don’t ask me why. ... read more

Had a whistlestop tour of Veliko Tarnovo yesterday and people are right, it is a really pretty town. It is set amongst an abundance of hills and is buried in trees. It consists of small winding streets and large churches/monastries placed on the hills in the town. I had an enjoyable afternoon just wondering around, firstly we we went the wrong way and walked to the top of the hill on the other side of the town (accidently) but it was nice to see it even though it wasnt so pretty. Following this we found the right place to go and sat on the opposite valley to the castle, whilst the sun went down before grabbing a bite to eat and then catching the bus to Sofia, which took a further 4 hours. Here it has ... read more

Day 10 Belgrade to Sofia We were all ready to get up and go this morning, however, our hostel host, while very enthusiastic, was not terribly efficient. Our breakfast, which was meant to be at 0730, arrived at just after 0800. So our 0800 start this morning became a 0845 start. Deep breath - what can you do? We were all a bit sad to be leaving Jana behind as well, and it started out a very quiet coach. So a semi long day ahead, unfortunately Thomas has a very individual sense of time and so we were also 20 minutes late leaving our first service stop. Again, oh well. Just makes the drive a whole lot longer for the rest of us. We crossed from Serbia into Bulgaria, and again I was the only one ... read more
