Total Distance Cycled: 854km over 9 cycling days The forecast for Tuesday and the rest of the week was suppose to be nice, but overnight and into the morning there was no sign of that. I'm not sure if we had even seen the sun since a week ago Sunday. We took our time until there was some confirmation that the weather was starting to break. It finally did, and we were off by 9:30! We found a side road for the first 25km that avoided the main highway that had driven Shauna bit nuts the other day. The road was VERY quiet, but the it reflected that, as in places it wasn't in great shape. We did get a chance to go through some small villages, though, and it was certainly a better experience than ... read more

Our growing laziness had not evaded us and our estimated time of departure from Plovdiv began to be aimed much later during the day. The "fast" train was slightly too soon for us to move from the cosy garden social area in the hostel, and we were ambivalent as to getting the "slow" train since we had little else planned that day really! Plus the slower train was a little cheaper as our faux budget tightened. After about three and a half hours, we arrived in the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia! Now, our treat... We had decided earlier on in the trip that it would be rather lovely to stay in a hotel in Sofia to treat ourselves at the end of the trip, go home rested and clean, and enjoy the privacy of a ... read more

Well I have finally started my travels, and first stop is Sofia, Bulgaria. A country I know little about, and whose language completely escapes me. I feel somewhat disabled by this and struggle not start speaking Spanish as my brain only knows two languages; English and Foreign. We arrived today at noon, Nikesh my travelling buddy who I met for the first time at Gatwick this morning, but had planned to travel to the IFMSA conference together via email. Luckily we get on! We were welcomed to Sofia with sunshine and blue skies, and given a glimpse into the Iron belt. It feels very European here with some very attractive architecture, but at the same time you can't ignore the Soviet style concrete flat blocks, and the obvious notes of poverty. It is a very small ... read more

Well this morning we left Plovdiv to head back to Sofia. After the usual train fun we have come to enjoy (really how can you call a train 'express' when its 30 minutes late?!?) we made it back to Sofia, or as they call it here, squiggle. Sofia bored us before, there was little to do and were here purely because the plane happens to be here. Were stopping in a different hostel this second time, a place that's won loads of awards and shiny things. When we arrived we were given a talk off the staff about what to do in Sofia (most of which we had already done). Sadly this was wasted on us, since tomorrow at 9-ish we'll be off to the airport. We took the tram, each armed with two tickets for ... read more

I took another lazy day today. I woke up to a bit of thunder, and was not at all motivated to move. Also, I could hear the street dogs barking all last night and wasn't too keen on meeting them in person. So instead, I decided to take today to upload a bunch of photos, organize some travel stuff, and just relax. Oh, and I had no local currency yet, and I didn’t really feel like roaming the streets of Sofia by myself. Sketch. When I went down for supper though, the restaurant was closed. Crap. Looks like I’ll be venturing out today after all haha. Reception was super helpful and nice, telling me how to first find an ATM. (Minor detail) And off I went. It wasn’t too far, about a 15min walk down the ... read more

I had the most bizarre encounter as I left Frankfurt. I truly have skill. Bus ride last night was alright - I didn’t sleep much b/c I’m so excited/nervous about Bulgaria, but I still managed to get 2-3 hours. I hate passport control… again, at 12:30am as we pass into Germany we get the guards. At least they were friendly… but we got stuck there for an hour. Sigh. Rest of the bus ride was uneventful (I talked to 2 American boys for a bit while stuck in controls), and then I had breakfast at the train station before taking the S-bahn to the airport. And that’s where my story begins. I need to stop smiling to strangers in Europe, it doesn’t do me any good. This guy smiles at me, so I smile back. He ... read more

6/23/09 Lily: Over the last four days, we have been in Pamporovoro and Sofia, Bulgaria. Pamporovoro is up in the mountains. We stayed at two different apartments. We did lots of hiking in the mountains. The views are small until you get up high, but when you are high up, the views are great. --- Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. There is lots of architecture in Sofia is European. I enjoyed the fancy shapes in the architecture a lot. --- We have repeatedly tried to find book stores, yet we have failed to find book stores for English speaking kids. We hope for better luck in Hungary. --- On our last day in Bulgaria, we went to the train station to take a train to Hungary, yet we were told that we could not go ... read more

Sofia and Bansko day 15 -17 (June 21 - 23) The truck was still wedged in our street the next morning, so we headed up the stairs with our luggage to walk the long way around to the Bus station. The trip was on a fairly comfortable bus. We sat near a young girl who was a local Bulgarian singer who gave us some tips on Sofia and some insight into Bulgaria. When we got to Sofia our rooms were in a fairly central area but in a hotel that was fairly tired. I ended up having a day in as I‘d jarred my wrist and it was fairly painful. We had a farewell dinner that night for one of the group who was leaving a few days early. Next morning I walked in the rain ... read more

After Boarding the Train for Sofia we were in for another surprise; the cabin (which we wondered the last time how it ever fitted two people) ended up being for 6 people this time around... a real space saver! Thankfully we had to share the cabin with only two others. Lizzy and Cos from the UK who had just finished University and were Inter-railing Europe for a few weeks as a treat. We also met Max who was travelling up from Syria after spending 5 months there learning Arabic. He was heading to Italy to meet his parents who have a house there. He's in college in Saint Andrews where the Royals normally go. All seemed well-to-do and had travelled extensively for their young ages of 21-22. It was nice to spend some time talking to ... read more

The day started with an early 6am train from Thessaloniki, Greece to Sophia, Bulgaria. Which meant a 4am start for us the get ourselves and the baby washed, dressed and packed, and then a hurried scramble to the train station dragging our suitcase behind us (we were too cheap to pay for a taxi, so dragged that thing for 30mins semi-jogging - almost broke my arm off half a dozen times when the wheel would get stuck in pothole). Grabbed a final taste of Greece from a bakery before finally dropping down exhausted into the train - made it with 2 minutes to spare! The train was quite a clean but bland affair and a bit stuffy. Sesame decided she would give us some grief by being a bit hyperactive. Okay - it was kind of ... read more
