I visited this town because P&O provided a bus there from the port of Zeebrugge. Normally the ferry runs daily from Hull but the Pride of Bruges was out of action so Pride of York was going on alternate days. Only 7 people got on the bus with the rest of the foot passengers heading to Bruges on two other buses. The fare was a good deal for a single traveler and even cheaper for two as it included a cabin and the bus. Food onboard is pricey so it is wise to take a picnic for an evening meal. I read up on what to do and decided that with 6 hours at most the Menon Gate and Flanders Museum, In Flanders Fields would be my priorities. As it happened, the bus driver got lost ... read more

So I won’t lie, I had a five minute teary eyed moment as the train departed from Crewe. I waved goodbye to Mum and El at the station (and already said bye that morning to Wilson & Binx!) and thought to myself “Just what to bloody hell have you gone and signed up for, you soft cow?!” Anyway, it took me a few minutes to tell myself to get a grip and man the f*ck up! I was also helped by a few friends giving supportive messages like – Be a nomad, not a gonad!! ……….Thanks Mark. I arrived at London Euston and started to walk to St Pancras, cursing to myself at the London signs which were about as clear as the canals here in Bruges. I arrived at St Pancras and was thoroughly frisked ... read more

Up at 0600 hrs and caught the bus in to Gent from the camp ground. Previously we'd seen a lot of mole hill but no moles however as we were walking through the park we saw a magpie attacking a small furry creature which turned out to be a mole. Well Gus and I rescued it returned it to the grassy area where it could hide. Sight seeing on Gent is great. Heaps of historic buildings. See photos and short comments.... read more

Up early as usual and breakfast at the hotel. Bob and Fran joined us. With panniers packed Gus and I attempted to program the GPS devices much to the amusement of Bob. We eventually got it sorted and after bidding farewell to Bob, Fran, Bec and John we set off. Always sad to say goodbye to my brother but not as bad as usual this time. He's a legend in my eyes. The track went under the river through a tunnel but the majority of the ride was on dedicated cycle tracks which were a mixture of beautiful tracks, dirt tracks and teeth rattling cobble stone roads which not only rattled your fillings but also the Crown Jewels. Ah well! Not much call for those anyway whilst I'm overseas. Had a few operator errors with the ... read more

Just a quiet day for a walk around Ypres. Though Ieper is the official name, the city's French name, Ypres is most commonly used in English. During the First World War, Ypres was the center of Battles of Ypres between German and Allied forces. During the war it was nicknamed "Wipers", as its name was difficult for English-speaking British Imperial forces to pronounce. Ypres is an ancient town, known to have been raided by the Romans in the first century BC. It is first mentioned by name in 1066 and is probably named after the river Ieperlee on the banks of which it was founded. During the Middle Ages, it was a prosperous Flemish city with a population of 40,000 in 1200 AD and renowned for its linen trade with England (mentioned in the Canterbury Tales). ... read more

Up at 0545 hrs although a slow start for others in the group due to an overdose of Belgium anaesthetic. I wandered around the local area and later in the morning Gus and I did the laundry. Following this it was a trip to the Antwerp Central Station to look at the 19th century architecture with Bob and Gus. Stunning building. We then met Fran and went to Middleheim park area to look at a few unusual sculptures with Bob and Fran. Nice place where you could spend hours and still not see everything. Fairly chilled day wandering around town.... read more

This day we headed to Ghent. We knew we wanted to take a boat tour around the city, but weren't exactly sure what else we would do. After walking all over Antwerp the day before, our feet weren't exactly ready for another 4 hour walk. As it turned out, the weather was really warm and we were not dressed appropriately. We really hadn't planned on it being so warm so all our shorts were back in England. We took the 40-minute boat tour, which was very nice, and then headed back to the house for a relaxing afternoon there. A little history on Ghent. It started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie in the later middle ages and became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe. It ... read more

Up early due to the excitement of going to Antwerp and meeting Bob, my brother. We'd previously bought some ham for breakfast so it was a matter of grabbing a warm French stick and some orange juice from the local 7/11. Gus and I sat and watched the locals going to and from work whilst having breakfast. Quite a sight really given that some ladies were on their way home after night shift. This was followed by Gus complaining about his haircut and the fact he now looked like Tin Tin but at least he'd got his monies worth even if his comb was now redundant and he wouldn't need another haircut for about four months. Gus and I had preprogrammed our Garmin GPS devices to take us to Antwerp when we were in Australia but ... read more
