Thanks to Mr. Wotherspoon for reorganizing us into new groups so we can continue to get to know each other. We set out this morning in groups of 20 - each with a guide for a 31/2 hour walking tour of Bruges. The medieval history continues to impress me and I remain in awe of just how old this city is. We were told today that if the residents of Bruges from 1300 came back today, they could still find their way around - that is how well this city is preserved. The Chocolate Museum was a big hit and just so you know, white chocolate isn't chocolate..... It is amazing to really stop and take a good look at the buildings, there are many numbers, gargoyles, spires, cherubs, friezes, that tell so many stories and ... read more

If you listened carefully at 9:15 am (Toronto time) - you would have heard the lovely voices of the Choir as they began their first performance. There is no doubt that their gift was carried to the heavens today while we were at St. Salvator's Cathedral. Truly a goose bump moment. You should all be very proud of your family member and please know that they shared their talents in such a positive way today. We're all adjusting to the time difference and after tonight, I suspect we will all be on the right track. After the performance we all had a chance to explore Bruges - truly an amazing city. And just to be clear, there is a chocolate shop every 50 steps. My own personal experience has been with florentines and orange peel covered ... read more

Greetings from across the ocean (and a few countries!) - We had a great flight and very well-organized transfer to our buses as we made our way to Antwerp today. We stopped and enjoyed the history and culture (and some lunch - lots of mussels and fries were ordered!). When we are walking around the narrow alleys and cobblestone streets - you always see a red choir jacket and you realize just how big our group is! I bet between all of us with cameras - about 250 shots have already been taken. We hopped back on our bus and it was a great opportunity for a nap from Antwerp to Bruges - the busses were pretty quiet! Our hotel is lovely - all the modern conveniences but set in something from a medieval village. Dinner ... read more

Our visit to Bruges was a day trip out from Brussels. The Globus tour bus let us off at the Bargeplein coach park. Unlike similar facilities to enable the touring of city centers, this one is in a very attractive park-like setting and within walking distance of the historic center. The part leading into town crossed the pleasant Minnewater (Lake of Love). This led immediately to the béguinage. The Ten Wijngaerde Béguinage was founded in the 13th century. Béguinages were places for lay religious women who lived in the community without taking vows or retiring from the world. Similar to a convent, but for lay women. In the Medieval era, they offered women a religious life together with personal independence and opportunities for purposeful work. Today, the béguinage was a quiet place. We walked through the ... read more

I was sad to leave Paris yesterday, but I was also incredibly excited to get to Bruges. I hardly knew anything about the little Belgian city, but I had heard great things from friends who had visited and had been charmed by the movie “In Bruges.” (Well not charmed by the plot, but more the scenery!) Drew and I split ways with my parents at the Paris train station in the morning and boarded a train to Belgium. All in all, the trip to Bruges took about 2.5 hours with a short stop in Brussels. Way better than flying and much easier. We got to our adorable boutique hotel - “The Pand Hotel” – around 2:30pm. I really had no idea what to expect, especially because we did not really get to see much of the ... read more

Today is our last day in Bruges. We stayed 3 nights and ate lots of chocolate. Bruges is in Belgium which is famous for beer, chocolate and french fries. I ate lots of chocolate and french fries, mum and dad drank lots of beer. The Belgians invented french fries but they're not called belgian fries. Do you know why? It's because during World War 1 some French speaking Belgian soldiers gave some fries which they called "frites" to some American soldiers. The Americans thought they were French soldiers and so called the fries "french fries".... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! So, this day started kind of weird. As me and Ante had woken up and eaten breakfast together with Dimitri (his girlfriend hasn't really been around that much during our stay here) he went back into the bedroom to her for a while after which he came out and asked us not to return after our day out in Bruges and Gent. We asked if something was wrong and he told us that he was going to a concert and he hadn't checked with his girlfriend beforehand and she didn't feel safe alone with two guys she doesn't know. There's nothing strange with that and it is their home so of course we packed up all of our things and left. Just feels strange though, we were planning on being away the ... read more

It is good to be back in Belgium, the countryside is so green, air is good, food is good. We headed out, not so early, to Bruges. This is a city in the Northern part of Belgium, about 1 hour away. We all piled into the van and had a roomy ride. 1st stop was a castle belonging to the family of Ghislain, an uncle’s family. Ghislan said that they would visit on occasion when he was young. Now they go once every 4 years I believe. The castle is a large building that contains a chapel on one end and the residence on the other end. http://www.kasteelvanloppem.be/infoen.html On the grounds, near the entry, is a labyrinth with paths separated by hedges. The point of the labyrinth is to get to the center where there is ... read more

I packed up my stuff and was on my way by the crack of noon. While I had been incredibly lucky with the weather thus far, as if to truly seal the end of the event, the skies opened up and rain descended. I was really happy my tent was already packed up. The train left from Tilburg and headed to the Roosedale station. I sat with a few Roadburners also heading that way and we chatted while the train moved along. Once in Roosedale, I changed trains and headed into Belgium. I was heading towards the coast, but stopping right before in a town called Bruges, perhaps more famously known due to the film In Bruges, starring Colin Farrell. The train pulled up to the station and I disembarked and walked towards the old town. ... read more

Up early (thanks Em!) and after a bit of organisation we made our way back into the city as we had promised Em a horse ride and chocolate today. This time we walked along a canal beside the city wall to one of the old entry bridges to the town. The medieval guard tower is still there complete with wooden tackle block for hauling cannons up to the top. Winding our way into the town, we discovered many of the major landmarks including a working nunnery where the nuns practice silence – no verbal communication at all. There are three Belgian specialties – lace, beer and chocolate. We found many chocolate shops and ducked into one where we bought some dark Belgian chocolate. Em liked it even though it is quite strong. Wandering further we passed ... read more
