Dawn found Monarch Empress waiting to transit the Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen and then follow the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal twenty miles (32 km) down to the city. Arrival in Gent was through its Dampoort. Eclectic style, with a front façade with mainly neo-Renaissance elements, of five bays and three floors under a gable roof. Sint-Baafsplein 17. Saint Bavo's Cathedral - Sint Baafskathedraal, Ghent. Sint-Baafsplein. "Cathedral of St. Bavon, or Sint Baafs, a massive edifice of plain exterior, founded in the 10th cent. and dedicated to Sint Jans until 1540, but from 1559 the cathedral of Ghent. The crypt dates from the 11th or 12th century. , the choir from the 13th; the nave and transepts were completed in 1533-59."--Baedeker 1910. IMG_9934

Limestone tower at Achtersikkel. Part of the Sikkel complex, an urban mansion, or "Steen", with its origins in the 14th century. The Achtersikkel’s name is derived from the name of well-to-do patricians, the Van der Sickelen family. This family enjoyed political and social prestige and long owned the buildings around the beautiful inner courtyard. The brick corner tower belongs to the oldest part. The high round tower was built in the 15th century using sand-lime brick and completed with an octagonal stone belvedere in Renaissance style added in 1566. DSC_0327

St. Jacob's Church - Sint-Jacobskerk. Romanesque church built after 1120. The church was extensively renovated and restored twice, between 1733 and 1784 and again between 1866 and 1906. "... the Place St. Jacques, in the middle of which rises the Church of St. Jacques, dating partly from the beginning of the 13th and partly from the 15th century. It was restored in 1870-73. The Visserijvaart or Visserij (formerly called Vissenrei or Rommelwater) and the Achtervisserij are two parallel watercourses in Ghent, a canal and a straightened Scheldt branch, respectively. Together, they form part of the Nederschelde, the branch of the River Scheldt that flows through the center of Ghent. To make the Scheldt more accessible, a new canal, called Rommelwater or Visserijvaart, was dug in 1752, east of the Nederschelde, which was straightened in 1751. DSC_0340
