"Cathedral of St. Bavon, or Sint Baafs, a massive edifice of plain exterior, founded in the 10th cent. and dedicated to Sint Jans until 1540, but from 1559 the cathedral of Ghent. Dawn found Monarch Empress waiting to transit the Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen and then follow the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal twenty miles (32 km) down to the city. Arrival in Gent was through its Dampoort.
