As you can see from the title, we are back in Austria again. Left Germany (Munich) this morning and caught the fast train down to Innsbruck. We had a bit of a hiccup in our travel plans last night when we tried to book a place to stay in Lucerne, Switzerland. We were up til late on the net and ringing around but couldnt find any vacancies there. So, we decided to backtrack a bit down here to Innsbruck. Glad we did, the railway down from Munich was absolutely fantastic. We thought we had seen it all on our trip from Salzburg to Zell-am-See, but today surpassed that. Today the "Wow" factor set in well and truly, oohs and aahs as we moved from one side of the carriage to the other. (Might add here that ... read more

Well its time to pack the bags and get the caravan rolling again. Its "Auf wiedersehen" to Frau Brigitte and her Privat Zimmer in Salzburg. We didnt do the "Sound of Music" tour as we were spinning on hiltops at 3000 m yesterday and the hills were well and truely "alive"............also, we have seen enough Marias, von Trapps and lederhosen in the last few days to satisfy the most discerning S of M addict! In other words, we have run out of time..again! besides, we have been past all the places in the movie and seen the sights on the "tourist trail" as well as the best parts they dont frequent, which is the way we prefer to travel. We are at the train station just grabbing a last minute blog before we board for Munich. ... read more

Today was the first day of my teaching internship. The age group I chose is middle school, and while I was a little nervous about it, I am now really happy I did. The kids are some of the most polite people I have ever met. They’re all either eleven or twelve, and are actually not Austrian - everyone (about twelve kids, I’m guessing) is from another country, so German is their second language. There are kids from Egypt, Serbia, Turkey, Poland, Italy… etc. It’s amazing, and very much something that I know will be enjoyable. I am going to be helping them with both German and with English, it turns out, which is great, because it will improve my German. At the moment, there are two student teachers around my age, who are both Austrian ... read more

Hi All Firstly thanks for all your comments, we've read and posted them if they appear in the box at the bottom of the journal. Great to hear from you, keep in touch. Well its taken almost 62 years but I've finally seen my first snow! What an incredible day.......2 hours on the train from Salzburg to the beautiful lakeside town of Zell am See then 30 minutes on the 660 bus to the base of the cable car. From there it was cable car to the first staion, open ski lift to the Alpincenter at 2450 metres then another cable car to the summit of Kitzsteinhorn (more than 3000 metres/ 10000ft+). Don't think it was your sort of ride Sally altho I think the Pearson family skiers would love it. I felt quite breathless snow ... read more

Grüsse aus Salzburg, We left Vienna by train at the respectable time of 10 am and got excellent comfortable seats in the 1st class compartment. This time we took some fresh sandwiches and drinks from the station kiosk and were set for the trip. Departed in nice sunny weather and arrived at Salzburg in drizzle and low cloud, although could still see craggy mountain tops poking out thru come mist. Lovely. We intended to just make it the one overnight here in order to jump off onto day trips or proceed further into the "unknown". We have no plans from here until Rome. We managed to secure a ( last one left at 3pm) little B&B, which turned out to be a private house. There are lots of these around and are good and cheap. This ... read more

Danielle and I decided that we needed a few days away from the deserts and dust of Dubai. After visiting a couple websites detailing what the southwestern part of Austria had to offer, we chose Villach for the first three days of our vacation to be followed by two days in Vienna. October 5th we flew Emirates from Dubai to Vienna (excellent service and product - Don't know how we'll be able to travel on any other carrier) and picked-up a rental car. The drive from Vienna Airport is not complicated as the A2 is connected to the airport by a fairly new bypass expressway. The A2 will take you through Graz and Klagenfurt on the way to Villach and one passes through some stunning mountain landscapes. The drive should take four hours if you drive ... read more

We departed Prague in drizzling rain, although still not too cold yet. We did a "dummy" run at Pra train station the day before leaving to purchase our tickets and so we would know where we were going when catching our train. Even still, we had a few moments pf mild panic when we arrived to depart. Appears they dont put up the departure platform until a few moments prior to train leaving. Toss in sheer bedlam, squilloins of people running to see if they can get in your way, nothing in English and dozens of platforms to choose between! Eventually, Wien came up with Platform 6 so we took a punt. (as did a few dozen other confused Americans, Btits, Japanese, Irish and other odd sods! We made it!! Even though we booked and reserved ... read more
