Our first journey alone Double click on pictures to enlarge them With a four day weekend in sight and eagerness to see other parts of Austria, all of the Drake students, minus one, joined forces and decided to conquer Salzburg. It just so happened that we all had Monday and Tuesday off, which made for perfect Sunday-Tuesday adventure. After booking our hostel, which only cost 15 euro per night, we decided that we better figure out the how the train system in Austria truly works. We have had our fair share of Wiener Neustadt-Vienna trips and manage not to pay for the subway system at all costs (not adviseable...only if your on a budget) Since we all could not speak or read German, we have to memorize long subway stops like Tscherttegasse, and used our ... read more

This weekend I went with my school program here in Prague on an excursion ot Vienna, what a beautiful city!! The streets and buildings are much cleaner than in Prague and the architecture is similar to that of Switzerland. I mostly spent the entire trip walking and eating which is really what I love to do anyway. We got in Friday night and skipped out on the mini tour to hang out with a friend of Cooper who is studying in Vienna this semester. He took us to a little restuarant called Weiner Wald so we could get Weiner Schnitzle (I got the chicken, not veal, schnitzle and it was really good). After that we had to stop off at the Sacher Hotel bar and dessertery to get Sacher Torte, a very rich chocolate cake, also ... read more

I got up at 7. After breakfast we went to Joyces Supermarket and from there we went by coach to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren Nationalpark. Before we arrived at the Cliffs, we visited the Dunguaire Castle, which was built in the 16th Century. Then we visited the Cliffs of Moher. When we got out of the bus, a stormy wind blew. But it was very interesting to see the Cliffs. Later we went home with the bus and we saw the black head. There isa face in the stone, which is called Black head. At half past five we had our dinner. Later we went to the city and at 11 o'clock we fell asleep. ... read more

Sunday morning we took an 8am train from Prague that got into Vienna around 12:30pm. Our hostel was a short tram ride away from the train station, which was nice because the hostel was in a fairly central area. I was really impressed by the hostel- it only opened last summer so everything was very clean and seemed very secure. They even gave us all maps when we got there that listed important sights to see while we were in Vienna. After we checked in we took the metro to one of the main streets called St. Stephan’s Square. My first impression of Vienna was that it had a much more urban feel than I expected. I was expecting it to be more of a small, old European city like Prague but the downtown area ... read more

Friday February 24, 2007 - Our German teacher, Herr Sulzgruber, thought it would be good to take our class on a tour of Wiener Neustadt. He is an officer in the Austrian army and has also written several books on Wiener Neustadt and its past. We started our tour at the Reckturm. It means Rack Tower in engish. It was built used as storage of torture equipment in the beginning of the 13th century. It is the nothwest corner of the original city limits and next to it are some of the old remaining walls of that limit. Today the Reckturm acts as a private museum housing a collection of a few of the old torture devices along with a private collection of WWI and WWII weapons. After the Reckturm, we went to the Domplatz (Cathedral ... read more

(June 26 through June 27 2006) June 26 Our train ride through the south of Germany and into Austria was beautiful. A perfect morning, few clouds, and the sun shining, provided spectacular views as we rode into Salzburg. We arrived in the city right before 10, and headed to the International Youth Hotel. The walk was short, less than 15 min, and not very complicated. We unloaded, and pre-registered for beds, and waited for a while until we could leave them in our room. The hostel was excellent, and we saw different brochures naming it one of the top 10 in Europe. We left the hostel and walked south on Paracelsusstrasse. We walked through the streets, heading to the river, and side tracked on some mainly pedestrian streets east of Makartplatz, and roamed around. From there ... read more

At 7 o'clock I got up and later we had breakfast. At 8.40 we went to school by bus. It tooke 20 minutes. The school began at 9.30. Our teacher Adeline came and we had to introduce yourself and we had to guess her age, interests and so on. From 11-11.30 we had a break. Then our other teacher Brian came and he talked about the theme “LOVE”. In the lunchtime I went to the Cathedral with Theresa. The Cathedral is an historic building, very valuable and big. I haven't seen such a Cathedral before. At 2 o'clock p.m. we made a treasure hunt and we had some questions to answer. I went with Theresa and Kerstin from the other class. It was very funny. We asked a lot of people, a few were very friendly ... read more
