Today was the first day of my teaching internship. The age group I chose is middle school, and while I was a little nervous about it, I am now really happy I did. The kids are some of the most polite people I have ever met. They’re all either eleven or twelve, and are actually not Austrian - everyone (about twelve kids, I’m guessing) is from another country, so German is their second language. There are kids from Egypt, Serbia, Turkey, Poland, Italy… etc. It’s amazing, and very much something that I know will be enjoyable. I am going to be helping them with both German and with English, it turns out, which is great, because it will improve my German. At the moment, there are two student teachers around my age, who are both Austrian ... read more

We departed Prague in drizzling rain, although still not too cold yet. We did a "dummy" run at Pra train station the day before leaving to purchase our tickets and so we would know where we were going when catching our train. Even still, we had a few moments pf mild panic when we arrived to depart. Appears they dont put up the departure platform until a few moments prior to train leaving. Toss in sheer bedlam, squilloins of people running to see if they can get in your way, nothing in English and dozens of platforms to choose between! Eventually, Wien came up with Platform 6 so we took a punt. (as did a few dozen other confused Americans, Btits, Japanese, Irish and other odd sods! We made it!! Even though we booked and reserved ... read more

Had a nice day today. Again, wish I had more time in this city but need to keep moving! This morning, our Tour Director took us out on a short walking tour so we could get orientated to the city. She does an excellent job, love all the facts and historical references that she gives us. Vienna was "formed" back in 996 and celebrated its 1000th anniversary a few years back. Much of Vienna is "green" because they have a large number of parks and trees. Probably in deference to the Vienna Woods which surround them. It makes it a beautiful city. Funny story...they have a statue in town of the "last Soviet soldier". As part of the treaty when Russia finally left, they cannot take the statue down. So, instead, those Austrians have gotten pretty ... read more

Today we got the coach into Vienna town. We were over the churches/museum etc so decided to just stroll around shopping through the main street. Afterwards we jumped in a horse and carriage and had a 45 minute tour through the streets. It was relaxing to just sit as we have done so much walking over the past few days. We then met back up with the group to go to the Schnaps museum. That was one we weren't going to miss! We got to sample and then purchase some famous Austrian Schnaps. We bought a Absinth kit and Vienna Blood (nicknamed Rocket Fuel). The trip back to the hotel was interesting as everyone had their fare share of alcohol. SLOVAKIA/BRATISLAVA Tonight our tour guide organised something a little different. Not everyone had to go but ... read more
