Not a whole lot to write about today. Spent a lot of time on our bus making our way from Italy to Vienna. Saw some beautiful mountains along the way and tried to take some pictures out of the bus window but just not the same caliber. We drove through lots of flat farm land in northern Italy then got to the Alps. Those are some big boys there. Very pointy, jagged peaks. Tops are in the clouds but I didn't see any snow. Lots of dry river beds along where we drove. Stopped for a quick break before leaving Italy and got some Italian chocolate to take home. Crossed into Austria and lots more mountains and many more lakes than we were seeing before. Our tour director did an excellent job explaining the history of ... read more

The first port of call for my European holiday is wonderful Germany, and the flight from Sydney arrived smack bang in the middle of the world famous Oktoberfest. I touched down in the commercial hub of Frankfurt, and then boarded a Deutsche Bahn down to Munich to join in the celebrations. The city was absolutely heaving and many Germans opted for traditional Bavarian costumes, with the frauleins an absolute stand out in traditional low cut tops as part of their colourful dresses. The guys featured a range of colourful hats to match their suede shorts, including frothing litre glasses and beer kegs on their nogguns. The festival is great fun although some of the revellers were feeling the worse for wear by the end of the day, however a great feeling of civility and cooperation pervaded ... read more

It's been a busy two days in Vienna. We arrived in the main south train station and had to make our way to the hotel to drop off our bags. We found out that it was 'ride the transit all day for the price of one ticket' day!! So after dropping off the bags, we rode the tram around the ring that circles the old town of Vienna where the wall around the city once was. We took in the Haus der Musik (Music House) which had some good Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Strauss displays and also some really weird and abstract displays about sound but these sort of went over our heads. This morning we set out for the Royal Treasury at the Hofburg Palace (home of the Hapsburg family). This treasury had the holy ... read more

The countdown has begun! In just over a week we will attempt to pack all our belongings in our rucksacks and start the adventure. The last few weeks have been hectic, trying to get all the admin done, finishing up at work, going to Spanish lessons and of course seeing as much of our friends here in Vienna as possible. It seems that almost every hour is accounted for and our looooong holiday will be well deserved! Although we are both very excited to get going, leaving Vienna is still going to be very sad. The 3 years we have spent here have been amazing. Vienna is a wonderful city and we have made some fantastic friends, who I hope we will keep in touch with for a very long time. I’m sure there are still ... read more

Hey everyone, Wow, being in Vienna seems so different after being in Eastern Europeon countries for the last week or so. I really enjoy Vienna and am really glad that Margie and I ended up coming here. We only spent two nights here unfortunately but seemed to see a lot. On the first day her and I woke up early and went to the Stephensplatz to see St. Stephens Cathedral. Unfortunately it was Sunday morning so we could only partially view the inside since they were having mass. It was really pretty though, a lot of detail inside. The outside wasn't decorated as much as I was used to seeing, especially in France. After the catherdral we walked over to the Hofburg Palace and did one of the tours of that. We got to see the ... read more

Wieden is also known as the fourth district. The Theresianium basically lies in the center of the wedge-shaped neighborhood. In the first several days, I explored many of the streets and buildings of this area I had never come to. Indeed, it's not very touristy, the only major site being the Rococo Oberes Belvedere palace, the photo of which is below. On the west side of the district, neighboring the 5th is the Naschmarkt, an open-air market four blocks long. It's a bustling place, full of some tourists, some Austrians and many of the internationals that now reside in Austria. Just at the end of the market are two buildings of interest: the so-called Majolika Haus. It was designed by Otoo Wagner, a prominant Jugenstil (aka Art Nouveau) architect. He also designed the Pavilions at the ... read more

My roommate, Alex, took this picture of me with a crocodile-faced Mozart at the Albertina, which was a museum that we went to with our German class. It was really interesting, and I learned a lot about Mozart, and it was in a beautiful old palace. More recently, last night, some friends (Matt, Katie, and Daniel) and I went to see "Schlangen am Flugzeug" meaning "Snakes on a Plane." In case you don't know, "Snakes on a Plane" is a big hit right now in the US, and although I hadn't seen it in English, I thought it would be really fun to see it in German, and it was really, really funny dubbed in German. Today, my German class went to the Rathaus and got a tour of the inside, and then ate at a ... read more

This is a test post. The last one, from August 31, was just copied and pasted into this new online journal from my other one, which wasn't good because it wouldn't let me add my own pictures or anything. And I guess while I'm at it, here are some pictures of my dorm that I live in :)... read more

This album is mostly just my friends and I in Vienna, and not enough of the city itself. I have been putting off going around and trying to photograph all the beautiful parts of the city because that would be very difficult. However, I have found some quite interesting things around here and the photos should give some kind of a glimpse into what weve been up to lately.... read more
