After a very "pleasant" train ride through the lakes district of Austria, we stopped at Hallstatt where we took a ferry across the lake to get to the town. We found a guest house where the owner was super nice and they had a museum of items that were found at the bottom of the lake which included a number of Nazi and war relics! He recommended a good restaurant, so we went. I got fresh fish caught from the lake which was amazing (something about the water conditions as to why the fish was so amazing). We took a walk around the area and came across a "bone church" and Megan made friend's with a cat (what's new). On our hike up the mountain to the top of the salt mines, we saw a dope ... read more

This next entry is going to be sullen and serious. Today we woke up bright and early and boarded our tour bus and made the 3 hour drive out to a small town called Mauthausen. It was a beautiful day, about 85 degrees, and not a cloud in site. The rolling hills of the area were filled with crops of all kinds. We approached the town and drove up a winding road in our bus and parked in a parking lot near the gates of Mauthausen. I saw the walls of the camp and they looked very old, but still in very good shape. We walked around a bit and finally met up with our guide. He started by showing up where the Schutzstaffel (SS) barracks were located, and the administration offices of the camp. He ... read more

I wanted a little Austrian town away from the tourists, so I went to the local vacation region called Salzkammergut, pretty much a lakeside paradise! I took a detour leaving Salzburg to see the town of Hallstatt. My guide said it was a treasure, and it was! The train stopped at the Hallstatt station, and you have to take a boat across the lake to get to the town. The boat only had about 4 people on it, including me, so I was happy it was going to be non-touristy. The views... ah, the views. The town is lakeside, cradled in the majestic arms of towering snow-capped mountains. I can see why locals vacation here (see the pics, but I'm sure they don't do it justice...). I got into the small town and walked the entire ... read more

Monday, 8/18 Melissa and I woke up early Monday morning, stuffed our faces at the breakfast buffet, and went to go find the rest of our group at the hostel. It was Shayna's birthday, so I poked into a few shops trying to find a birthday card and a small gift. I thought it was really important to make her feel recognized on her birthday. When we finally got the group together, I made everyone say, out loud, what they wanted to accomplish out of the day. Since my group was so big, there were a lot of conflicting agendas. I don't know why it didn't happen naturally, but I felt it was important that we all verbalized what we wanted. With this exercise proving to be a success, we divided up into groups based on ... read more

We left Bavaria today for the last leg of our trip... a tiny town in Austria called Hallstatt. A lake on one side and a mountain on the other, the town is so small, they say you can walk from one end to the other in about 10 minutes. Mom and I tested this theory when she decided that we needed to go back to the parking lot to retrieve something from the car. Angie said she would sit down and have a beer while waiting for us, and we set off in search of the car. She should have known better than to let the two of us go off by ourselves, as neither of us have any navigational skills. The town is built on the side of the mountain, so there's one main road, ... read more

After Switzerland we drove back to Germany and the Barvarian Alps. We went to the castle Neuschwanstein which looked amazing but you will have to take our word for it as our photos of it have since dissappeared into the world of 0s and 1s! We drove through Munich (stopping in at octoberfest for a beer) to Berchtesgaden, a little part of Germany on the border with Austria and once home to members of the Nazi party and the famous kehlsteinhaus "Eagles Nest". The scenery around there was amazing although Anna would like to mention that the bus ride up to the eagles nest was scary! From there we travelled to Salzburg, a nice Austrian town where Anna was trying to break out into Sound of music song fests! So trying to get as far away ... read more

I HATE RAINRAINRAINRAINRAINRAIN! ok, not the Korean singer nor the HK popstar... Was just planning to stay in Hallstatt, but since the weather was so bad, decided to go run through two lakes instead. Hallstatt, is this VERY TINY village that is listed in UNESCO....for its beauty? for, I got there, the train station is on the other side of the lake so I had to take a boat across. It was deserted! which was nice and peaceful but the rain really made the scenery not so nice... There are a few churches there, small and cute..haaa! The lake was beautiful, just the fog and rain covered the mountains at the back...." Anyways, walked around, nothing was opened...the coolest part of the village is the Beinhaus..the bonehouse. Its in the cemetery and its actually a grave ... read more

Yesterday, we rented a car and drove down to Austria. Our destination was the little mountain village of Hallstatt. The rental car place didn't have our Opal, so we got stuck with a Mercedes E class, darn, haha! The first bit of driving on the autobahn was a little scary, but once I got the hang of it, it was a blast. It was like I was driving in a luxury car dealership. Porsche's, BMW's, Mercedes's, etc. all flying by at least 150km/hr (95~ mph), often much faster. The scenary was beautiful on the drive. Definitely 'Sound of Music' country. We made to Hallstatt still early in the morning before all the tour buses arrived. We had the town pretty much to ourselves most of the morning. I can't describe how pretty it was there. Hopefully ... read more

We were up early for our 4 hour train trip to Hallstatt. After an enormous breakfast (Tim) we hailed a taxi and headed to the station. A small error (Vicki) saw us miss the first train and had an hour delay for the next one. lol We travelled through some amazing country side mainly through the lakes district. There are many lakes in this area will small towns on their shores. Arriving at Hallstatt we had to take a short ferry ride to the town. What a sight it was from the ferry!!!! Everyone on the boat fell silent as they madly clicked away on their cameras. Thank god for digital you can just go crazy, and we did. Hallstatt is right on the edge of the lake with its houses built steeply up the ... read more

Hwaet, and we went to the fair hamlet of Hallstatt. And the adventure started early. Between running from Spar to Hütteldorf Bahnhof (if youve been to my place, thats the trainstation you gotta bus to) and then the confusion of why we shouldnt change trains. (ours said 'to salzburg' but they told us not to change to the Salzkammergut, which as it turned out was because they dismantled our train and part went to Salzburg and part went to the Salzkammergut). And... on the train, we had a lot of time on our hands, and I had 2 music majors and an eric at my disposal. So I had them come up with how to transpose real music into a cell phone.
