Today was the day we (well, at least I) had been waiting for. The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg, which takes you to many of the set locations of the famous movie, and also gives you a history of the real Von Trapps and information about the movie. We woke in the original Von Trapp house early in the morning. Our tour started at 9:15, and although we had done the test-drive of getting there the night before, I was eager to be ready to make sure we had plenty of time. I wanted to check-out by 8 to give us time to walk to the bus stop and then remember our way to Mirabellplatz, where the tour started. Breakfast in Villa Trapp is only served from eight, so we had to forgo it ... read more

Probably not the going to be the most exciting read today, as the events that occurred today were not overly enthralling. Nonetheless, it was still an enjoyable day for our arrival and overnight stay in Salzburg. We woke early this morning - the first time for the whole trip we have needed to set an alarm. Our journey today was via train to the city of Salzburg - the birthplace of Mozart and the city which belongs to the Sound of Music. We went for an early breakfast at the hotel, and unlike yesterday, it was fairly quiet. Only a few other couples were about at about 7am. As this was only going to be an overnight stay our main luggage was able to stay in our hotel, and we each took a backpack with us ... read more

We had decided we would have one day in Salzburg while staying in Ebensee so figured it was sensible to go there with Irvahn who was returning to Zurich today via Salzburg. We could at least travel with her part of the way. On arriving in Salzburg we found that the train to Zurich was delayed firstly for 20 minutes then longer due to "technical problems". Irvahn duly got on the train which had now been split into two and sat and sat. We could see that something was happening far down the platform but weren't sure, what. After some time, we figured we should just say goodbye and go. We soon found out the issue. The train concerned had come from Budapest with a full load of refugees and off loaded them here. We found ... read more

Chris is feeling much beer this morning after a sleep and the tablets. One of those things that happens when travelling. We leave for the train station and our trip back to Austria. Some food and work out our platform, then waiting and watching. Eventually move to the platform and our train arrives about 10 pminutes prior to departure. Our first class carriages are at the front. We get on and find a cabin of 6 seats and settle in. No one else loves us so we are happy in our space. trainndue to leave at 1018 (yes, the Germans are very efficient and prompt). Train leaves at 1018. We await the conductor to make sure we are on the right train and in fact allowed to stay in our exclusive cabin. No problems, conductor clicks ... read more

Another early start, firstly the walk from my hotel to Haupthahnhof (the main train station) then across the road to be in front of Karstadt department store where all the Gray Line coaches depart from each day, to be there by 7:45am. Why be there so early when they depart at 8:30am? - because they leave earlier if the bus is full. They have been running these tours for many years but still they are not organised in that you are immediately able to see which coach you should be on as they have no signs on them with which coach is going where and with seven or eight coaches in a row - it can be daunting. What makes me laugh is that the drivers get grumpy telling people which bus they should be on. ... read more

My stop after Vienna was Salzburg. Salzburg has been high on my list of stopping places after I found out that my grandpa was stationed there during the Korean War. It was a beautiful city to visit, situated in a large valley between the mountains. My first day was just spent walking around the city and exploring. I stopped in the Salzburg Dom, which is the cathedral, and admired its beauty for a while. I also wondered around a few squares and into St. Peter’s Church and Abbey. I also took a walk through the Mirabell Gardens and saw where they shot multiple scenes of the Do-Re-Mi Song from the Sound of Music. Of course being in Austria, I had to stop at a café and have a drink and some cake and I made my ... read more

Today, we took a day trip to Salzburg. Did not have a lot of time there but soaked up all the ambience we could. Home of Mozart and the Sound of Music. Had a bus tour through the area and saw many sites. We are scheduled to leave tonight around 11:30pm on a sleeper train in Venice.... read more

I don't know about you, but I've had a jam-packed 2 days here in Salzburg. I didn't even get in town until almost 3 PM yesterday. I've seen a lot more salt and heard a lot more classical music than just about any other time on this trip, though. Before I left Vienna yesterday morning, I had 2 missions: exchange all that Eastern European money, and get a couple of items of summer clothing. It's getting hotter here, and I don't like it one bit. I got the Croatian and Hungarian money exchanged, for a total of 60€, so that gave me some pocket money without having to hit up an ATM (which always ends up costing more money than I take out). The Romanian money, though, was a different story. Nobody wanted it. So now ... read more

We had just one night in Salzburg, and were immediately enchanted. Cold and dusted with snow, it was fairy-tale like on our first night there and transformed by the sun the following day into a charming, riverside town. Salz=salt and it was a big, huge deal some several centuries back and a great source of wealth. That and some disputes in that part of Europe meant that Salzburg needed protection and so the Hohensalzburg fortress was built in the 11th century. The fortress hangs high above the town in picturesque fashion, as these old buildings do; the medieval center is equally picturesque and charming. We went on a boring tour of said fortress--or at least the first part was boring (though the fortress is fabulous!). I escaped fifteen minutes in by signaling to a guard my ... read more

Last year for Christmas, I went to the markets in Vienna. Over the summer I spent one rainy and amazing day in Salzburg. I wanted to go back. On Friday afternoon, Kathleen and I left school and got on a train. On the way there we listened to and discussed the latest episode of Serial (obsessed). When we got to Salzburg it was dark because December in Europe is generally dark. After taking the wrong bus, taking the right bus, and wandering around a lot, we finally found our couch surfer Jojo (pronounced Yo-yo). We went back to his house, which felt like a ski lodge. There was a super nice Canadian couple, so we hung out with them that evening and went to bed early. In the morning we got up and headed straight into ... read more
