Bags to coach was at 7:20am so early get up. Today we were driving from Innsbruck to Venice, Italy. We stopped off about 3hours into the driving at a roadside stop for an early lunch as after that we got to the mainland Pport at about 1:00pm for our boat across to old town Venice. The boat road was only about 30minutes. When we arrived at the absolutely stunning Venice old town we made our way past the Bridge of Sighs (which unfortunately is being restored at the moment) and in to Piazza San Marco. Here we met up with our sound man, who fitted us with headsets for our walking tour of Venice. A few minutes later our tour guide arrived. She was the best tour guide I've had for anything. She was French and ... read more

Berat is thought to be one of the oldest towns in Albania and is overlooked by the Kala (or castle to you and me). I spent most of the day exploring Berat and started off with the castle, which was mostly built in the 13th Century, but with origins going back to the 4th Century BC. A very beautiful place with great views of the surrounding area, as I was walking up the hill to get to it I heard the crump of artillery shells in the background, which is always an intersting backdrop to any walk:-) There must be a firing range in the area unless there was another Balkan war taking place:-) Most of the castle inside the walls is in ruins, although there is a nice church which is worth a visit. Sofia to Tirana via Struga We spent the day driving across Macedonia to Skopje where we checked out the hospitality at a sidewalk cafe. On our drive through the countryside we passed many red-roofed houses as we made our way to our camp on Lake Ohrid. This beautiful natural lake was perfect for an afternoon dip before our group had a talent quest with some pretty interesting (and some very disgusting) talents on display. Can’t believe we made it to Day27 before our tour group learnt that Sheree could actually sing! Breakfast was cooked and tents were down early in the morning in preparation for a long day’s drive into Albania and on to Tirana where our hotel for the evening was perched on a steep mountainside. After a few cold beverages we plunged into ... read more

I was joined by my chums from Skopje on the bus to Tirana but their hostel was full so ended up in the Albania Hostel, which was a most agreeable place. On the taxi ride to the hostel the driver advised that you don't have to wear seat belts in taxis only in Private cars, I did ponder explaining the merits of wearing seat belts (especially in Albania, as the drivers are crazy) but decided against it and resumed the conversation about Manchester United:-). The hostel had a bar and a puppy, what more could you want:-) The next day I had a walk round the centre of Tirana but like Skopje, it was also a building site, I think there has been an influx of money into the Balkans countries and they seem to be ... read more

No, obviously I'm not in Albania but I can't blog without listing location but a hiccup in the program vs iPhone makes ut challenging! So Albania it is. I survived a Saturday night in Killarney, from the chocker blocked pubs to the techno nightclub my hotel room was so conveniently placed above it was a good night! Mind you the pints of Guiness and Smithwicks I'm sure helped me vibrate my way to sleep gently (thump.thump.woowoo). Yesterday I was feeling a wee bit like a caged bird who needed to stretch her wings when the perfect opportunity showed itself . After a quaint morning of cool villages, (Adare) cobblestone streets and lovely views, we arrived in Killarney and I had a free afternoon. So after standing in a doorway during a torrential downpour for half hour ... read more

On our travels our intension was always to go through Albania. Several years ago when it was communist country, it was one of the most isolated Iron curtain countries, there was no way you would be allowed in, you would have been shot! On researching our journey through Albania, we started to worry about the state of the roads,(we need to take care of Bongo, there’s a few thousand miles to go!) and possible documentation worries. So we had planned to drive back to Dubrovnik, take the ferry back to Italy then another to Greece, by-passing Albania. However, we never like going back where we have just been and the thought of 24hours on ferries was not appealing. Fingers crossed, we chose the border crossing that leads from Montenegro’s Capital Podgorica to Shkoder in Albania. We ... read more

Now here’s five words I never expected to say – “We went to Albania today!” That’s right Enver Hoxha’s former ”stomping” grounds. A bus picked us up, brought us over the mountain to Corfu Town where we boarded and Ionian Ferry Line ship. An hour and a bit later we were on Albanian soil in the growing city of Saranda. We took a tour bus to the ancient ruins of Butrinti – by 400BC it was an established Greek settlement, and a couple hundred years later became refortified by the Romans – later Augustus would reframe it as a veterans colony – fast forward to the 900s and it was remodelled as part of the Byzantine empire. Lightly settled again by the Ottomans in 1600, then it was ceded to Napoleon by Venice and in 1799 ... read more

Tirana, Albania’s capital, is a loud, dusty city. After a 16-hour overnight bus trip from Athens we contemplated exploring this city until we stepped foot off the bus and were immediately hustled by a number of Albanians. We hadn’t even picked up our luggage off the bus or decided whether we were going to stay or head towards the Montenegrin border further north before one guy was already on his mobile calling his mate to tell me in English over the phone that the cab fare to the train station would cost 5 euro. His insistence and unwillingness of the others around us to answer our questions made me want to get the hell out of there - fast. I thought Istanbul’s unscrupulous merchants were dodgy, but Albanians take hustling to a whole new level which ... read more

Today we were up at 6:30 am to leave for Albania! The coach left at 8 am. It was going to be a big travelling day today. Although the distance wasn't that far, the road we were going to be travelling on were very bad (windy, bumpy, and unpaved) in this part of Europe, so it would take double the time it would usually take to cover the same distance. I was looking forward to seeing Albania since it is not somewhere that a lot of people can say that they've been to. I thought it would be very interesting. We stopped for our first services at 9:30 am, which was just a tiny little gas station in the middle of nowhere. We had to line up to buy food and use the toilet. We should ... read more

So, what the hell am I doing in Albania? Well, it’s because of Eng. I first met her in Ecuador in October of 2009. We travelled south eating everything from giant roasted pigs in the markets to guinea pig together. She met me for my 8 hour layover in Heathrow on the way to Africa and we knew we had to travel together again. She planned for a month off work and had her heart set on Eastern Europe – and she thought Albania sounded cool. I’m game for just about anything so off set a celiac and an Asian girl from London for an Albanian adventure.
