Population Puerto Rico : 4mill San Juan 1.5mill Puerto Rico has some of the best coffee in the world! Tourism is one of the main income sources. I went to the mall to go buy a few things and then one of my friends and I went for lunch at Senor Frogs. The Mall looks brand new, and quite impressive. We did not have enough time to do some sight-seeing, and I didn't get to take any pictures either. Back to work at 2pm and didn't stop working until 10pm since it was formal night again, and everyone wants their hair done before their dinner seating... ... read more

From Ponce, we made a leisurely passage of about 25 miles to an absolutely lovely anchorage in Salinas. We arrived in plenty of time for a restful afternoon of reading and relaxation. We anchored out a bit so that we would have easy access out early in the morning. We awoke at 5:00am to find that things had shifted around such that it looked like our anchor was quite close to a neighboring boat! But, as we started hauling in, it became clear that we had plenty of room. The passage out to open water was a bit scary in the dark, but we had a nearly full moon and a recording of our track in on the chart plotter. I haven't said anything about this device. For those not familiar with them, it is the ... read more

We now both understand why the Mona Passage has the reputation that it does! Even though we made our passage in relatively mild conditions, it was a challenging exercise. We left Puerto Bahia at about 8:30 am and had a pleasant day as we worked our way toward the actual passage. Of course, by the time we actually moved into the passage, it was dark. And things always seem scarier in the dark. Thank goodness, we had a nearly full moon which helped see the sea conditions. Before I go to far, let me make it clear that we were never in any physical danger. The boat performed exceedingly well. It was just a question of being a bit uncomfortable with big rolling seas which seemed to change direction every half hour. But, we knew both ... read more

After spending a pleasant evening in Boqueron, we hauled anchor a dawn and started working our way around the southwest corner of PR and heading toward Ponce. The day started calmly (as you can see by the picture of the lighthouse) and proceeded to get more robust. A stimulating passage which we were happy to end at the Ponce Yacht Club. After getting ourselves secured in a slip, we headed up to the club bar and restaurant. We met some really friendly and helpful club members who gave us some great local information on completing our trek up to Fajardo. We finished the evening with a nicely prepared grouper filet. Today, after Terry goes into the Customs office to purchase some sort of decal that we need, we will head up to Salinas which is only ... read more

Today is our last day in Puerto Rico and in the morning we rode the “subway” through new San Juan. This railway is much like the DC metro system but on consists of 16 stops. This system also differs because it is computer based and runs on a very strict schedule. The conductor does not run the rail but rather the opening and closing the doors. The computer program adjusts the speed of the train to ensure it arrives to the stations on time and if unable to arrive, another train is dispatched to ensure all passengers are on schedule. New San Juan is very similar and very different from any main land major city. It has metropolitan like structures, tall towers and offices, but there is no separation of class. The poor live right up ... read more

Today was a day of exploration of Old San Juan and the human geography aspects. San Juan is considered a primate city, meaning there is more living within the city itself than the island. In the walking tour of San Juan, there are over 46 destinations, all similar and unique in their own ways. We managed to see a few key sites, such as Fort El Morro, Fort San Cristobal, and many Plazas as well as a church and the cemetery of San Juan. The Plaza’s are numerous throughout San Juan, mainly because of their communal feeling. People of San Juan are largely community based. Evidence of that could be the multiple individual festivals I’ve encountered on my trip here in each city. Each individual plaza holds its own historical value, such as the Plaza de ... read more

El Yunque National Forest is the only thing on today’s agenda. El Yunque National Forest is located on the Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico in the Greater Antilles group. The El Yunque National Forest is the sole tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest System. The forest’s relatively small 28, 000 acre size belies its importance. It differs significantly from all the other U.S. National Forests because of its year-round tropical climate and immense biodiversity. The Luquillo Mountains rises to 3,533 ft. above sea level comprise most of the forest land. Their steep slopes can sometimes receive rainfall of over 200 inches (508 centimeters) at higher elevations. The rain forest is noted for its biodiversity; it is “home” to thousands of native plants including 150 fern species, 240 tree species; 88 of these are endemic ... read more
