Awoke in San Juan and realized the ride thru paradise was over. Today (in the heat) we will endure the long lines in the cruise terminal, the long walks thru 3 airports, the comical banter with the customs guards to make it home. Our trip covered 2500 nautical miles, lots of great meals, buckets of Bombay Sapphire and hours at a slot mahcine. Every island had something different to offer and we didn't have enough time to see it all. I would think that a littler later in the season would be better to get slightly better weather. I am going to include my favourite pictures in this blog and look forward to the next trip.... read more

Central America Caribbean » Puerto Rico November 1st 2011

As if it weren't enough to be able to bounce around Europe in my free time, I felt it necessary to leave the continent to get a taste of the Caribbean this past week. My boyfriend, Matt, has signed with a professional volleyball team in the Liga de Voleibol Superior in Puerto Rico. He's played 6 games for Los Changos de Naranjito thus far. As a talented setter with advanced leadership skills he has recently played a huge part in positively influencing the attitudes of his teammates and outcomes of their matches. Being it a Catholic university, KUL takes the first two days of November off for All Saints and All Souls days. Matt and I had discussed me going to PR to watch his games and be a small part of his experience there, but ... read more

The ship left the port of San Juan at 8:30 after dinner. Bars, bars, bars everywhere. Went to a Scotch tasting.. Macallans 18 yr old is wonderful, Highland Park is way to peaty for me. First day of cruise and it is one that is entirely at sea.. Very smooth ride but you can feel the ship moving. When sleeping it is just a gentle rocking motion. Elke's day at the spa... Wandering about looking for more bars... Heading ro the top deck, some sunset pictures and then dinner Barbados tomorrow.... read more

Today we start our epic journey home. We think it's around 6000 miles. We have booked a taxi to collect us from the apartment at 8.00 this morning, so did not have to be up too early. Check in at the airport all went according to plan. Were a bit surprised that we did not get charged for our extra bag as this is the longest leg of our 4 journeys so far over the last three weeks. The flight from St Thomas to San Juan in Puerto Rico took 23 minutes. As soon as we got comfortable it was time to get off again. We had been warned many years ago that Puerto Rico was expensive and it certainly seems to be that way. In the airport. we found a small bar, one of only ... read more

Started at 3:30 am. Fairly smooth flights into Miami and then onto San Juan. HOT - 88 degrees and humid... really humid. add a couple of rain storms... did I say humid?? Found hotel after short diversion by cabbie.. (drive like in Santo Domingo) While i was writing under the pretext of getting info, Elke went to the bar and the casino and brought back some blood orange and basil mohitos. Very helpfull staff at Sheraton have directed us to 2 restaurants... 1st - Raices authentic Puerto Rican food - an appetizer featuring plaintains. 2nd - Barrachina, again with local food and flamenco dancers - the home of the pina colada. They claim they invented it - yes i did try one and it was ok - more pineapple than coconut. Main course was a mofongo ... read more

Mountains are not the first thing one thinks about when thinking about the Caribbean, but for the last few days we stayed up in the mountains of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Both have high mountains covered with rain forests. The DR has a mountain over 3000m high but we did not pass the 1000m mark. Still, mountains are a refreshing change from beaches. Frankly, we are not really beach-folk and climbing up and down forests is where we feel more comfortable. Another source of pleasure in traveling in the DR and PR is that for the first time since my trip to Latin America in 2003 I am speaking Spanish. Although my vocabulary is not as good as it was after that 8 month trip I'm happy that, even after a decade without speaking ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Puerto Rico » Culebra » Dewey April 26th 2011

Signs of being back in the USA After our passage from the Dominican Republic our first anchorage in Puerto Rico was Boquerón. This is a small resort town located in the southwest corner of the island. It not an official port of entry, therefore we had to get transportation to the customs and immigration office in Mayaguez. In order to do this we found Raul who has a business providing transport for cruisers back and forth for $15 per person. We made the arrangement and got checked in without any problems. It did however cost us $27.50. This was for some customs sticker that was required. Bob was to say the least a little perturbed by the idea that he had to pay to get back into his own country. When was the last time any ... read more

Thoughts while on a night passage – April 2011 Lately we have been doing a number of overnight passages. Recently we were both up when Bob asked for a pad of paper and pen to write down some thoughts. Here is what he wrote: As a species we have always been afraid of the dark because it holds so many unknowns. We have worked tirelessly to eliminate it from our world and we have succeeded admirably. Rarely in our urbanized life are we ever in darkness and with the flip of a switch or push of a button it disappears. One of the things we have discovered on our travels is the sheer beauty of a dark night. Just when you think it is dark you look up and see the stars. The stars are magnificent, ... read more

Arrived in San Juan in the early afternoon, a quick car ride from the airport. Got checked into the fabulous Hotel El Convento in the heart of the old city. Then, got out on foot to explore the old city squares, the cathedral, and the old Spanish forts guarding for ships from the Atlantic.... read more
