Greetings from Viejo San Juan, PR. It's a little after 10pm and I'm struggling to stay awake. The worst news of the day is that I forgot my camera's usb cable, so I can't upload any photos. I'll try to buy another one here or have mine shipped to me in Bequia. So, for now all you get are these boring "no photo" blogs. SORRY! I arrived in SJ about 3:30. I'm staying at a hotel called "DaHouse". When the taxi driver dropped me off I couldn't even find the front door. I asked the bartender across the alley and he said "third door" When I got to the third door it was locked. About that time a couple of girls came out the door and I asked how to get in. "You have to ring ... read more

The last week has been a lot of fun. Mostly people hanging out together and having good times. Last saturday Laurie (my advisor to all that don't know) decided we needed to throw a party. We invited everyone from Punta Santiago (the other researchers) and of course, their was the undergraduates, myself, and Laurie's friends. So in all, it was a lot of people. For the party we actually got the grill to work... not the little charcoal burning grill we have been using so far, but the huge propane powered grill. It would never have come together if it weren't for Mike's deep knowledge of grilling technology (he is an undergraduate). laurie went all out and bought Kabob materials and hot dogs and burgers. I didn't use to like burgers much, but the less meat ... read more

Rabbit Fricase Puerto Rican style Yesterday, there were 25 rabbits, already skinned, provided by the Finito's family. Finito Sr, and I cut them, washed the pieces in the escamador(an air conditioned room for the purpose of scaling and cutting fish). We cut and peeled 15 lbs of potatoes. 3 lbs of onions in rebanadas (sliced in rounds) 7 garlic heads, which I promptly minced. Then the fun started. Trapito, one of the guys here, brought a homemade stove and a propane tank. This huge pot. In went 1 gallon of welch grape juice, the rabbits, onions, 1 cup of rum(white), 1 can of coke, 1 teaspoon of instant coffee, 1 can of beer, laurel leaves, culantro in a great quantity, the garlic, goya adobo without pepper, goya achiote sazon, cooked for an hour, added the potatoes, ... read more

Hey all - It's been a while since I've written. The last group of undergrads left and a new group has arrived. I turned in a large grant. I've gone to monkey island and gotten some data, although not nearly as much as I would like. Whatever, I just have a certain number of goals and I would like to reach them before I leave. To walk away with a functional experiment this summer - that would be heaven! I actually think a lot about starting to write up and get some stuff out there. I would love to put a lot of energy into that this year. I'm starting to think a lot about my trip to Costa Rica. I have to book a place to stay the first night (even though I get in ... read more

Hello All - I'm back again. On the blog and in Puerto Rico. Things have been pretty good. The weather is mediocre, but not to hot, which makes for good monkey experiment times. Monkeys I recognize from last year are a year bigger. Its amazing how much they grow! I've finished one project and moved onto the second. Which is good because I have four things on the docket for this one month that I am here. I'm also writing a grant, and I feel that is going really well too. I "finished" it on the first, and so I have until the 14th to continue to work on it. Yeah! Things go fast though. The undergraduates I started with here are already leaving next week. Ack! And I still have to remember to plan some ... read more

Pipo called this morning, asked us out to lunch. He came around 1430 with wife Ana Maria and Granddaughter Nati. Pete drove through town, we know more about the area....We ended up at La Ancla Restaurant. I had my camera, but we had a teenager, who dove in the Bay, and was being washed away. I totally forgot about the camera...Fortunately, the Restaurant crew made phone calls, cops came by car, and a fisherman was going by from Villa Pescarera, and flag down. Seconds later we saw the police boat flying towards us. The kid is ok. His Dad got a phone call from the police...He picked up son at Villa pesquera, and brought him back to pick his fishing equipment. The wind and waves has been pretty bad. The resaca, (undertow) has been ferocious for ... read more

The avocado is long, like a gourd, but taste same. The granada, Wikipedia calls a sweet grenadilla, tastes a bit like orange and almond. Some of the seed are hard, so you spit those out. Hard to eat. Claimss good for the stomach.... read more

Ay Dios mio! Bendito...Virgen...We arrived around 1900 hours. We had a light dinner and quiet on the boat. It was raining, we had another tropical wave come by. Seems like every few days this time of the year, the waves come by. Here they call it "aguada". Winds have been up to 35 knots. Rain comes and goes. So as I said we arrived at the Club, Daniel was wondering where we were...He was getting ready to call us. But we know Latin parties, come late and stay late. There were maybe 40 persons altogether. The barbecue was going, with charcoal. They had hot dogs, pork ribs, pork chops, chicken, morcilla ( blood sausages yuck!) All kinds of salads, rice dishes, pasta, etc... Someone had brought an inflatable pool. And you know guys, they had hoses. ... read more

We were invited to Mercedes and Daniel's home today. This is the 2nd time we have been invited to their house. Mercedes cooked an asopado de Camarones, (rice and shrimp in a soup). We also had barbecued chicken and pork skewers to pick. I brought 4 plantains very ripe. She cooked them in the oven, so simple, she cut ends off, lay them in a pan with nothing, and cooked them for about 25 minutes in the oven. The skin breaks open, easily removed. Very tasty! and no grease! After lunch we played dominoes, to the double 6, different than the Cuban which is double nine. But same rules, same slapping, same name calling...What a blast! We came back to the club around 1600, to see what was going on...We found lot's of activities, members cooking ... read more
