Since leaving Mexico we have traveled through Central America by chicken bus, at least 50 buses. And on only a couple of them have we seen backpackers. I am so proud of us as this is no easy feat when you don't speak Spanish. We haven't felt threatened or scared and people always smiling and ready to help. Glen always helping the people with their produce ie bags of rice, and heavy loads. And so we have loved the experience and it's been incredibly cheap way to travel. But to meet the ordinary people has been the most rewarding. At each different country border controls, we have dodged the tourist buses. The guys that tell you that theirs no local busses, to get you on expensive tour busses we followed the locals and have researched different ... read more

After a week of total decadency in Lima, Peru, our first stop in Central America was Panama. True, traveling from Cartagena via Lima to Panama City is not the most logical route, but one of the nice things of having a lot of time is being flexible. Panama City is kind of a schizofrenic place. One part being like any American big city, the other a beautifully restored colonial town. Restoration is still in progress and there are newly refurbished buildings next to facades wihout anything behind it. Apparently, the Panamanian government is promoting the country as a great location to retire and that shows: modern high rises and facilities, foreign big chain restaurants and hotels, American prices, a beautiful promenade, air conditioned malls, and many (older) Americans - tourists and residents alike. Not our cup ... read more

It was finally time to leave South America. Though fun and although I had seen and done some amazing things, there were elements of frustration that accompanied me throughout my time there. This continued right up until the last, having had my water bottle, my universal adaptor and flip-flops nicked within a few days. WTF backpacker people. For good measure, South America decided to give me a final dose of bedbug bites to send me on my way. To be completely honest, I felt that I had had my fill of South America and that I was ready to move onto somewhere new. But South America hadn’t had its fill of me and did everything it could to stop me from leaving. Crossing from Colombia to Panama is notoriously difficult and a pain in the arse, ... read more

Jan 10, 2016 The Canal This morning at 7 AM we arrived at the entrance to the Panama Canal. I did not see it or hear it, but when we went up to breakfast, there it was. We were already in the third Gatun Lock. (See photo 1). It was all very slow and majestic- no scraping or bumping. When the lock filled, we were drawn by “mules” that run alongside- very small powerful tractors. You may remember when Jimmy Carter turned the Canal over to the Panamanians, many people said that such backwards people could not possibly run this complex enterprise. Actually, of course, it was like the great non-disaster of the calendar in 2K. Pro forma, we were boarded by a Panamanian official who acts as temporary Captain while passing through Panamanian waters. We ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Panamá » Panama City November 3rd 2015

Geo: 8.99427, -79.5188On Tuesday, Nov 3rd we arrived at the entrance to the Panama Canal. For us this was a much anticipated highlight of the cruise, one of the main reasons we had chosen this particular trip. We were up early and on deck about 6-30am. We were due to pick up the pilot at this time and then reach the first of the locks at 8am. We could see the coast of Panama in the distance and we passed many cargo ships all lined up waiting for their turn. We grabbed a quick breakfast and coffee at the Ubersee buffet and were on Deck 9, at the bow again by 8am. It was a slow and steady progress as we gradually approached the harbour. I counted at least 50 ships all at anchor. We had ... read more

David to Panama City I was thinking this morning; this is just like riding at home except the flora and fauna are different, we ride on the 'right' side of the road and it's hotter than hell. In other words it's nothing like home! The road to Panama City was hundreds of kilometres of road works, the road surfaces were patchy and bumpy. Driving out of Santiago I saw a vortex of large black birds. They look pretty neat swirling around, I imagine they are riding thermal updrafts. We rode over the Panamá canal via the Panamá Bridge which was pretty amazing. I couldn't get a good photo of the canal as they'd put some stupid meshing along each side (possibly to deter people from stopping to take photos). Anyhow, the bridge itself was a pretty ... read more

Nicaragua to Costa Rica and Panama. With an early start we left the comfort of our fortified hotel in Granada and headed for the border with Costa Rica. The ride was uneventful until the border where we first of all had to exit Nicaragua, it was stinking hot and everything was done at windows with the people inside with Airconditioning and us out there in the heat. The entry into Costa Rica was just a matter of formalities and finding our way to the stamp in our passports and on our papers to temporarily import our Motos. We chose not to use the Carnet system as they have moved on from that silly costly system over here and just issue you with a 30 or 90 day temporary import document. We have to buy some insurance ... read more
