An easy boat ride and 4x4 trip brought us to Panama City. It felt both awkward and pretty good to be back in the world of comfort, electricity and modern facilities. Koska sain huoneen tunnin myöhässä, pyysin saada olla huoneessa lähtöpäivänä samaan hintaan klo 13 asti. Nukuin taas aika huonosti, vain noin 6 tuntia, kuten yleensä matkapäivän alla. Ennen aamupalaa hoidin check-inin tabletilla. Päätin varata paikan Economy Plus -luokassa 60 euron lisähintaan. Aamiaisen jälkeen kävin vielä klo 10.30 ottamassa aurinkoa noin vartin verran ilman paitaa ja aurinkorasvoja. Olin sopinut taksimatkan lentokentälle 25 dollarin hintaan kuskin kanssa, joka heitti minut pari päivää aiemmin vanhastakaupungista keskustaan päin. Hänhän oli antanut puhelinnumeronsa ja viestittelimme Whatsapin välityksellä. Hän tuli paikalle vähän ennen kahta. Taksimatkan aikana ilmeni muutama seikka (keskustelimme siis espanjaksi). Sain nukuttua peräti klo 7.30 asti. Menin katsomaan kanavaa. Ensin kävelin reilun 1 km metroon. Aurinko paistoi ja oli lämmintä yli 30 astetta. Metrolla pääteasemalle Albrookin bussiasemalle. Metrossa ollut nuorimies neuvoi minut oikealle pysäkille, josta lähti bussi Mirafloresin sululle. Mukaan tuli muitakin, kuten kaksi nuorta naista Sloveniasta. Bussi vei ihan turistikeskukseen asti. Koko joukkoliikenne maksoi puoli dollaria. Latasin muuten matkan aluksi kortille lisää 2$. Turistikeskus esitteli hyvin kanavan historiaa ja nykyistä toimintaa. Yhdessä huoneessa näki millaista oli mennä laivalla sulkujen läpi. Paluumatkalla oli ongelmana kun auto oli parkkeerannut bussin reitille ja kuljettaja joutui peruuttelemaan. Tänne on muuten tullut paljon väkeä Venezuelasta työn perässä, kun oman maan talous on surkeassa kunnossa.... read more

Geo: 8.99427, -79.5188Today's the day! Today we go through the Panama Canal. I'm pretty excited and not at all surprise that when I wake up at 7 Jeff is already out on the balcony.We know it is going to be at least an hour before the big event, but we want to find a good viewing spot. We head up to the Horizon Court Buffet to get some breakfast. The buffet is at the front of the ship so it is not surprising that the tables at the front windows are occupied. It looks like people have staked out their spots. THE PANAMA CANAL When I started my trip this year, I wondered where I would dive, and what I would see. I started in Costa Rica…now where to??? Right on down the map was Panama. On the water so I can go diving. And I haven’t seen the Panama Canal, that I knew was a massive engineering feat. I knew it was a waterway that used locks like those in Seattle but far bigger and grander. I knew it connected the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. I knew it was a shortcut so boats didn’t have to go around the tip of South America. That was about the extent of my knowledge. I don’t intend to give much statistical information.
