I started writing my blog yesterday and then forgot to finish. Oops. Two days ago I was in the process of setting up my phone for a new SIM card. I thought I was going to have to go all the way back to Volcan for the SIM card, but then Nadia informed me that they sell SIM cards at the grocery store down the road. I completely restored my phone and then walked down with her when she got off of work. She came in with me to give me a hand since I didn't necessarily know technical words for SIM cards and such, but when he brought the SIM card, we realized that it was too big. He said something about cutting it, but as we were looking at the size of the gold ... read more

So, after the girls left I set of for the town of Volcan, which is the biggest in the immediate area. I had a grocery list and I also wanted to get a chip for my phone. I walked down to the bus stop and stood there for a while. After a minute or so, another woman came over to me. We chatted a little bit about the weather (in Spanish) and then she asked me where I was from. I'm not very good at figuring out whether they're asking me where I'm staying here or where I stay in the States, but we got through it. The bus came and I got on. The only problem was, I had no idea if I was on the right bus. I assumed that there was only one ... read more

Ok, a LOT has happened over the past few days... Let's start on Thanksgiving day. I grabbed a shower late in the morning and then started preparing my lunch. So there I am, standing in my kitchen with a towel wrapped around my head and no makeup on when suddenly someone is knocking on my window. At first I thought maybe it was someone coming to fumigate my house to get rid of the spiders, but then I looked and saw that it was a white woman. I took the towel off of my head and quickly fluffed my hair before answering the door. Apparently, some tourists made it all the way down to my house. I answered their questions and then left kind of hastily. They continued looking around down near my house and I ... read more

I actually had a lot of work to do today. I kept going right up until five o'clock. I worked on my permit application and then I worked on my applications for graduate school. I also had to send notifications to a few of my professors that I need letters of recommendation. Asking them to write me recommendations always makes me feel a little bit guilty. Maybe that's because it seems to me that they are always busy and never seem to have a spare moment, and I know tons of people ask them for recommendations. At least I have confirmation from all three of them that they'll write me good recommendations. I can't imagince coming out of college and going "uhhhh, who should I ask?" I've read articles entitled "how to get into grad school" ... read more

It rained and rained and rained some more yesterday. I got soaked just walking up from my house, but I was excited to get up to the office because Jolanis and I were going to go to Volcan for groceries and lunch. Unfortunately, Jolanis decided she didn't want to because of the rain, so instead, I worked on Spanish for most of the day. Around 3, I decided to walk down to the little corner store. That walked left my pant legs throroughly soaked, but the walk was COMPLETELY worth it. I found another salamander on my way up the driveway! It was huge. It had and SVL (snout-vent lenth, which is like the length minus the tail since they can lose and regrow tails) of 8.88cm and it was missing it's tail. It also wasn't ... read more

Man, it just pours and pours and pours here sometime. This morning I measured some of the relevant information about the new salamander I caught and then decided to wait until the rain slowed down a little bit to go up to the office. I did some pull-ups on my spiral staircase while I waited, and then eventually decided it wasn't ever going to stop, so I went on up in the pouring rain. When I got to the office I checked my email. I had sent Erik Lindquist a picture of my new salamander and he sent me an email back saying that he thinks it might be a new species, so I preserved it and sent a few pictures to Roberto Ibañez at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for another opinion. I'm not convinced ... read more

All I did yesterday was practice Spanish. I used duolingo for hours, I looked up different tips for learning languages online, and I bought a spanish learning/grammar ebook. When I finally went back to my house, instead of going to sleep or playing a game on my computer, I went through the first 8 lessons of said Spanish book. Since I have so much trouble sleeping anyway, I figured I might as well do something productive with my night. I worked on the book till 3am, and still couldn't fall asleep afterwards! Everything that I've read says that focus and actually trying to speak the language are the two most important things about learning a new language. I've definitely got the focus part down, but I could probably use a little bit more actual speaking time. ... read more

I've always been scared of the dark. Maybe it's because I watched too many scary movies growing up (okay, not maybe... I know that's why), but I've always been most afraid of things that aren't real. Take me to the top of a cliff and tell me to look down, and it won't bother me at all. On the other hand, take me into the woods at night and leave me there and I'll melt into a puddle of tears and snot (I'm working on my imagery... how'd I do?). At least, that's the way it was for me in the States. For some reason, though, while I'm here, all of those non-real threats don't bother me. I'm not scared of much more than spiders and maybe other people while I'm here. I've decided that this ... read more

Hola everybody! Sorry I missed blogging yesterday. You didn't miss much. Two days ago I worked on my permits, practiced my Spanish, and looked for frogs and salamanders. After looking for amphibians I went into the kitchen and found Jolanis there eating crackers. I had some soup for supper and talked to her for a while. My Spanish still isn't very good, but it is getting better. I know A LOT more than I did! Also, it absolutely poured rain all day long. Yesterday I got Nadia to help me with the parts of the permit that I couldn't figure out with the translator. After work, I walked down to the Super Mini Guadalupe at the bottom of the hill. I left around 5:30 and got back right before it got dark at around 6:20. Now ... read more

Around 1pm the electricity went out at my house. I was hoping it would be on up in the main office, but it wasn't there either. I helped the girls repot some orchids until the electriciy came back on and then spent most of my day today practicing Spanish. At 5:30, Jolanis and I walked down for fresas con crema and I went to the "Mini Super Guadalupe", which was like a small grocery store, though not as small as the little corner store. I needed more Jelly. I wonder how bad it is for me to eat Pb&J every day? I eat other things too, but I always have at least one Pb&J sandwich each day. I thought it was interesting that the woman who checked me out at this store was Asian too... what's ... read more
