With intermittent electricity this week, I was unable to finish my stories from the other day. During the time we did not have lights, many of the locals were stopping by our house and speaking with my host parents. My host father works for the electric company, so some of the locals think it is his fault when the lights go out in the town. He is quite famous. Today I started my volunteer work at La Jungla. It is a small wildlife rehabilitation center just outside of town and up another mountain. It is run by an American who lives on the property full time. There are monkeys of various species, birds and parrots, a small animal who looks like a tiny ant eater with claws that could shred glass. The entire facility is ... read more

I am out of wet wipes and my shower remains broken. Out of desperation and the fact that I am offensive in smell to myself, I decided during the absence of my host family, to sneak around their house and found a working (and cleaner) shower. It was still freezing but was oh so worth every second. I thought I would have gone insane if i had to wait one more day. it was truly becoming an obsession of mine to find clean water. After my evening shower I resigned myself to my room to study when everything went pitch black. It was so dark i could not see my hand in front of my face. PANIC! I looked outside my window and saw nothing. My heartbeat was accelerating quickly. For the first time since my ... read more

I have learned a great lesson today; be ALWAYS thankful for what you have. Here is how my day went in quick review: Woke tO the sound of tha cockamani bird and I believe this morning he brought his bretheren to join in the circle around my window. I could only laugh. Headd to the shower to freeze my you know whats off and foun there to be NO WATER. I tried several times thinking there might be a delay. Nope. No water and my family had left for the day so i could no ask what as going on. What I failed to realize or make th connection in my brain was tha if there is no water for the shower well than there is no water for the toilet either. Aaaggh! So a couple ... read more

That is not code for anything. I was awaken unexpectedly from my sleep by the screams of a rooster who continued its yelling till 7am. "Oh this can´t be" I thought as I dragged myself out of bed to the shower. The water was freezing cold. I mean ´ice off the mounain in springtime´ cold. I wanted to rest my head against the bathroom wall in defeat but at this moment it is the residence to a spider the size of my elbow. Day 1 begins. Took me an hour to wash and then I surfaced to the upper level of the home where my host mother met me with a steaming cup o panamanian coffee. It was the smoothest coffee I have ever tasted. Organic coffee farming is prevelant throughout the province of Chiriqui. Some ... read more

Laid Off. Fear and panic were apparent as I watched them process what I had just shared. These words had taken a stronghold in their brains as their tongues strung sentances of concern and empathy together and offered rapid fire suggestions of resolution. Names of friends in corporate positions and employment websites were jotted onto whatever paper was handy at that moment, and then placed in my hand with a reassuring pat. I couldn't help but smile slyly as their advice swirled in the air around me, falling just short of my ears and dissipating. For the record it had ONLY been 30 minutes since I was escorted from my workplace (and had skipped the rest of the way to my vehicle). I had been warned that in a week or two I might find myself ... read more

We thought we didn’t do much since the last time we wrote, but in retrospect we did quite a bit! Wednesday we hiked Sendero El Pianista (Pianist Trail). El Pianista is “a pleasant day hike through dairy land and into humid cloud forest”. There was just one thing keeping us from the hike and that was crossing a small river. It had to be pretty easy; there was a whole family that lived on the other side. When we got to the river, there was an old man trying to fix a bridge. His idea of a bridge and mine differed vastly! While my idea had at least two pieces of wood tied together with rope, he was installing a too-short “I” beam and rocks. He helped me along for a couple of steps, then I ... read more

After a long, two day drive from Granada, Nicaragua, we are now in Boquete, Panama. Boquete is a small mountain town near Baru Volcano in northwestern Panama; in fact, the only volcano in Panama. Boquete is popular with expats from many countries and is hugely different from the colonial towns we have stayed in on our trip so far. The drive from Granada was not terrible even though it took two days. It was about 2 hours from Granada to the Costa Rican border. The border people from Costa Rica seemed surprised that we weren’t going to stay in their country. I don’t think they had ever had anyone pass through Costa Rica to get to Panama. It seemed like it hurt their feelings and they weren’t sure how to do the paperwork. We enjoyed the ... read more

Receiving a package from another country (Holland) is not an easy thing, at least not here in Panama. Here is how it works: You open your PO Box and find a form that says there is a package waiting for you, nice ! it’s always exciting to get one. Then you take the form inside the post office where you have to sign twice and they give you another form. The new form has to be taken to the Head Post office in another town in order to retrieve your package. Upon arrival at the Head Post office you have to go to a window on the right, hand over your form and sign two times, again. Step to another window on the left where you pay $ 0.65 and they give you another form. Finally ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, I forgot to mention the state of the toilet in one of the bars in Santiago. It was without doubt the worst toilet I've ever seen. It rivals the one in Jaipur which was on a main road and was just a white tiled wall with men behind it taking a leak. This one was a wooden door which fell off it's hinges as I entered and before me was a white tiled floor and a wooden trelless that was soaked in piss and floating on the bodily fluids that emmanated below it. I was going to wash my hands but the colour of the liquid in the sink suggested that most people had foregone the plank in front of them and opted for a quicker exit. (It didn't take long for the ... read more

After several days of rain, the sun finally came out. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful, with flowers and fruit trees, sculptures and hammocks. The flowers and fruit attract many different birds, plus they put out cut fruit for the birds as well. One couple took a birding tour and saw the elusive and rare Quetzal, but not many other birds. We stayed around the property, and saw lots of birds. I don't know the names of them, so I will just post the pictures. Steve is doing well. His finger doesn't hurt and the cast fits well, so no problems there. We both are vacationed out, and are looking forward to coming home.... read more
