Our original New Year’s Eve plan was to go to Bocas del Toro a Carribean archipelago in the north western corner of Panama. However, reading between the lines of people’s experiences there and a quick scout around online left us thinking that Bocas the US’s latest Cancun-ised party spot was perhaps best left off our itinerary. Instead we elected for the rather more sedate mountain town of Boquete. Unfortunately also evaded by Americans but this lot were the retiree set whom we felt would be a little more manageable. We stayed in what is certainly the most comfortable hostel thus far. Right on a little river this Swiss style chalet house equipped with an expansive dining table, kitchen with a fridge which could comfortably house a family of four and a handy outside area with do-it-yourself ... read more

Monday morning was already warm by the time I woke at 7am. I got up and had a chat with Mike who was leaving shortly, and worked on my blog for a while. After another pancake for breakfast, I packed my bag, returned my sheets and checked out. It was pretty sad to leave - Mamallenas is a very comfortable and friendly place! I was going to include photos of Hostel Mamallenas, but the card that was in my camera has had an error! i can´t get photos off of it :( I lost some of my photos from the Panama canal too, including the ones of Anette with Anders. Anders, Annette and I then headed out with Claudio (from Switzerland), to catch a cab to the Miraflores locks of the Panama Canal. We quickly found ... read more

After two nights in Panama City we decided to swap the scorching, busy metropolis for the cool, lush mountains and forests of Boquete. We awoke early and got the 8.15 bus north to Panama´s second city David. After nearly missing the bus due to us queuing in the wrong area entirely we were hustled on as the bus was pulling off. Unfortunately the bus was quite busy and we would have to sit separately. I sat down beside a man who appeared to be asleep and throughout the 7 hour bus ride he did nothing other than breathe. Clare on the otherhand sat beside an elderly Panamanian man, probably in his sixties. The man´s resemblance to Morgan Freeman was scary, the only difference being that he spoke no English. As Clare sat down the elderly man, ... read more

We are now in Boquete, which is about 4 and a half hours away from Bocas Del Toro. We decided to make a pit stop on our way to Panama City. It was a very long day of travel. We left Bocas Del Toro at 12:30 pm and traveled by boat to Changuinola which took an hour and $7 per person. Then made a bus for David which took 4 and a half hours riding through mountains. That was $8 each. Sometimes we were in the clouds and I told Macayla that we could actually say that we had our heads in the clouds. Anyway, then we took another hour bus ride ($1.50 each) to Boquete. We got in around 7:30 pm. We had to visit at least 5 hostels before we found one with available ... read more

Day 208: Panamerican passage to the hills beyond Not wanting to be searching out new lodgings in the dark, I had to set off early this morning, and having got up before the pervy security guard had poked his nose round the door, I got a taxi to the bus terminal and caught the eight o'clock bus to David. Fairly uneventful, the journey was fairly restricted to the usually tarmacked roads of the Panamerican Highway. In between the films being shown on board, I did manage to get a bit of sleep and met a couple of English girls a few seats in front, and seven hours later, we arrived in David, a big and fairly unexciting city, and hour or two south of the Costa Rican border. From there, we caught a big yellow American ... read more

Here are my first impressions of Panama... First of all, do whatever you need to do in the morning, unless you want to get VERY wet doing it. I tried, and tried again, I got soaked every time, so now, my planning goes with the weather, and I make sure I´m inside by 1pm! Believe me, when it rains here, it doesn´t half do it, it´s the proper 'oh oh I think it's raining season' rain! It looks like Panama is richer than Costa Rica. Well, not eactly that, but it´s like the rich are richer (there are some lovely houses round here!), but unfortunately, the poor seem to be very poor, I have seen houses that to me looked like chicken sheds... And finally, I expected that, but it´s still fun to see how true ... read more

I’ve been spending the last 6 days now in Boquete, Pamana. Boquete is a small town, with gringo influence, in the mountains of Panama. There is the main street, with some restaurants, a few small souvenir-type shops, small supermarkets, and other assorted stores. There’s also the small hotels or hostels around town. Finally, for those people ready to buy their second home (or relocate to a whole new life) - which will often be older gringos - there are plenty of real estate agencies ready to get you into a new house. Finally, being in the mountains, there are great views and cooler temperatures than that of even David, a short 40 kilometers away. In fact, it is amazing the temperature difference. Here in Boquete, the temperature has not seemed to have gotten much above ... read more

The early morning bus from Ciuded Neily was crowded and it was already hot when we were dropped at the Costa Rican side at around 8am. The whole process was rather chaotic and getting papers dealt with seemed rather random. We also had to wait some time in a bank queue to get our Costa Rican Colones changed into dollars before heading to the Panamanian side which seemed even more disorganised. I tried to find the usual arrival forms that all countries seem to want but was only given a Customs form. Then we were approached by a guy with an official looking badge who said that we needed to pay a $1 tourist tax. We were rather suspicious as we believed we needed a tourist card which cost $5 and he said it wasn't this ... read more

From Panama City, we flew to David (second largest city in Panama) and drove around 45 min. to Boquete. Boquete is a relatively small town (6,200 people according to Wikipedia) in the mountains near the border with Costa Rica. It is growing really quickly due to a large influx of American and Canadian retirees. We saw a lot of gringos around town and were amazed at all of the billboards in English and signs advertising land and houses for sale. We stayed at Isla Verde, a beautiful resort just a couple of blocks from town. We were almost giddy when we got there because it was so gorgeous, especially after the rough introduction to Panama we'd gotten in Panama City. We got settled and were hanging out for a little while before going to get some ... read more

Up to the Highest Height! On the 25th of Feb, the Katies, some friends and I went to the Chiriqui Province of Panama to climb Volcan Baru. The summit is at about 11,400 feet and about a 7 mile upward hike from the base of the volcano. We spent the first two days in Boquete, a tiny town nestled in the foothills of the volcano and surrounding mountains. On our journey from Panama City to Boquete, we stopped by a bus-station foodstand to get some lunch and apparently all ate something there that didn't agree with us. As soon as we reached Boquete the 5 of us had terrible cramps and spent the following day rushing to the bathroom every few hours. Of course there were lots of bathroom jokes made and it was quite ... read more
