In the afternoon of our last day in Boquete we took a drive through the mountains around Boquete. There is some pretty scenery, and some interesting sights. I think the thing that strikes me the most is the difference between how the indigenous people live compared to the other middle class panamanians or the ex-pats. The indigenous people here live very simply - and their living conditions are often what we would think of as terrible. But we see them out every day like everyone else, putting their kids on the bus to school, or walking to work or to the market. Many of them have garden plots for themselves. They don't seem unhappy, for the most part you dont see them begging or publicly drunk. But their houses are something to see. Some live in ... read more

Today we planned to go river rafting. A driver picked us up and drove us first south to David, then north, almost to the Costa Rica border. We met up with some other people and all headed into an area that is all torn up with a hydro-electric dam project. I am not sure why they use this area as their put-in to the river, but they do. We got all fitted with helmets and water shoes and life jackets, then we stood around while we got the safety talk - things like how to paddle and what to do if you fall out of the boat. We wondered what we had gotten ourselves into. Then, we started to walk down to the river. The road was steep and rocky with water trickling down it, making ... read more

Boquete where the howling wind is strong enough to blow you to town and back!!! Seriously it is strong enough to lift the roofs and it does!!!!! But enough about the weather..... At last ..... Settled for a week and a chance to unpack the back pack.... Well maybe not but hey we could have... A) if we had wanted to and B) if we actually needed half of the stuff we'd packed!!! And after a full on day travelling on the local buses from Panama City to Boquette, which included a good hour queuing for tickets which meant we missed the 9.45am bus and were put on the 11.30am bus...we missed the school 6pm briefing and arrived at our destination in the dark to find the school was in fact 5kms outside of town... (where ... read more

This map shows the second part of our trip. A looong bus ride from San Jose, CR to Bocas del Toro, Panama. We cross the boarder at Changuinola, then catch a water taxi across to Bocas. After 3 days there, we head back to the mainland and into the mountainous interior of Boquete. We will take a day trip to Isla Boca Brava on the Pacific Coast, then will fly back to San Jose from David.... read more

We received an invitation to meet the Dutch Ambassador who was visiting Volcan and Boquete. Before it was “just” a Consulate but things change and therefore we now have a Dutch Embassy in Panama City. Great news ! We got in contact with another Dutch person who lives on the same road as we do so we could follow his car to where the meeting was being held. In the first email it said it was a get together with Dutch people who are living in Volcan and Boquete and to meet the Ambassador. Just casual, a drink and a snack. The next email told us that it would be held an hour earlier than mentioned, 06.00 pm instead of 07.00 pm which made me happy because that way it was still light so we could ... read more

Christmas in Panama! The shoppers are no less driven to find the best deal than anybody at home bac in the States. Stores are open for long hours; there is free christmas wrapping; there are all kinds of shiny things: new bikes, toys, tools, electronics. And the grocery stores have long lines and carts are full of rice, beans, meat, beer, wine. Many prices are pretty comparable to merchandise at home, and so it would make sense that many people are calling Panama City a first world city, after all. We did not entirely escape the pre-Chrismas craziness however, this just had a different smell and flavor to it, as it were -the smell around the meat counter was nauseating. Naturally, I would have enjoyed spending Christmas with my family, but it's cold in Seattle, and ... read more

Shasta and Amigo This one is about our four-legged friends, Shasta and Amigo. Shasta is a mix of a Labrador and Anatolian Shepherd dog and is four years old. Hubert rescued him from a Shelter in California, Shasta was only one year old and very goofy. He turned out to be a lovey dovey Dog, yes with a capital D. The first two years we all had to figure out how to be together but after camping for three months we worked it out. Shasta even played Houdini once in Eureka CA. We left him in the car, in the front seat so we could go out and have a necessary haircut. When we came back and looked into the car, there was no Shasta. We looked at each other and checked the doors, yes they ... read more

Home and Garden Monkeys no longer wake us up in the morning, now it’s up to the birds and crazy roosters. Yes, crazy roosters, they start around 03.00 am already, crazy enough right ? The birds are funny, they make all kinds of sounds. There is one type of bird that kinda talks. He says things like “one two threeeee” or “el camino” or”l don’t believe you” or “we’ll go with you” or “l miss you” And no we were NOT drunk when we heard this because it was early in the morning. We started working in the garden, taking grass out so we can plant tomatoes and other veggies. But last month was the rainy month so that stopped us. Before that we were able to do a lot of weeding, and l mean , ... read more

After our Panama City adventure we were ready to get back to nature so we headed to Boquete, a small mountain town in Northern Panama. Boquete is well known for two things, retirement and coffee. It was about ten years ago when an AARP article listed Boquete Panama as one of the top destinations to retire, as a result, baby boomers headed south and infiltrated the city. Although it is a top spot for ex-pats to retire, it is not quite awash with gringos, but the effects of their presence has definitely had an influence on real estate prices - which are probably now equal to or higher than several locations in the United States. However, given the idyllic location, if the real estate was located in the states it would probably be quite a bit ... read more

The Week Continues... On Wednesday we had the morning off because the school was closed for some reason, but went to Casa Esperanza in the afternoon to do some art projects. We brought some black and white outlines of pictures for them to color in and made a long chain out of construction paper which they had a lot of fun with. On Thursday we had our first day at the school. It is a bit far away so we took a taxi there in the morning for about $3. While Tim worked with the guys outside I was in charge of teaching in front of a class of about 25 1st graders! As someone who has never taught a class before it was definitely a bit overwhelming. I had prepared a word search for them ... read more
