After a two day delay due to torrential rain, the ethnobotanical class made it to Popa Dos. It was fantastico. The professor, and 4 students went on a botanical walk and observed an artisan demonstatraion. I told the students Porfirio is enthusiastic about sharing his medicinal plant knowledge. He did not disapoint. He led us on a short hike on the Popa Sendero. During the walk he stopped to talk about the plants and let them ask questions. At one point he sat down on a log and told them he was going to dar clase. Some of the students speak basic Spanish the others only English so I acted as a translator during the class. They had plenty of questions and he willingly talked about his journey to become a botanico. It may be hard ... read more

... read more

I spent Friday and Saturday nights in the Meri Ngabe cabina on Isla Popa. It only cost 15$ which is a very good bargain. The cabina has running water and a flush toliet! Things have really improved in my little community! So the bueno there is now a collegio on isla popa, at least there are 2 professors who teach collegio. Collegio is like junior high and high school in the US. This means the kids boys and girls can go to school instead of having to stop once they get to 6th grade. I can´t tell you how excited I was to hear that. One of my favorite kids Porfilo is 17 and finished the ¨7th grade this past year. Who knows if he will be able to continue to 12th grade but he has ... read more

I spent this past saturday with some of my favorite kids from Popa, and a new one I just met. Porfilio and Edy were my friends when I lived there and I still have many of their drawings. They took me along with Tito to their farm. Then we stoped at Ricardo's in Crawl Cay for some johnny cakes and sodas and then out to the bouy to swim. It was so much fun and Bocas is still so beautiful!... read more

Wednesday we took a boat trip to the mainland and visited friends' property there and then went snorkeling. Unfortunately, we hit a big rainstorm even though we'd waited for couple of hours for it to pass...it's warm enough here, even in the rain, for getting soaked to be an OK experience! Their property is beautiful...off the grid and waterfront backing up to jungle covered hills. The snorkeling was great again. We saw a small white and grey ray, three squid, and many fish and much coral. Thursday morning was even rainier...so we spent time reading and on the internet, taking care of hotel reservations, school stuff (for Lynn), and of course, the travelblog! In the afternoon when the rain stopped, we took a water taxi to the nearby island of Bastimentos. We ate lunch at Roots, ... read more

I went to Isla Popa 2 today after being gone nearly 4 years. It is diffrent yet completely the same. The teacher I knew is still there and all the same families. But there is a new bigger school, a new library, a functioning restaurant and hotel with FLUSH TOLIETS! The ADEPESCO office is there too. My house was taken apart and is gone. My friend who had left the isla to go to Costa Rica is back living with her children. Her name is Clementina. I had not seen her in a very long time, she was always a close friend and so nice to me. She gave Elaine and I coconuts to drink and some Johnny Cakes to eat. I´d bting you one mom if it would not mold! We did not stay too ... read more
