My whirlwind tour through Central America continues, dear reader, with selected highlights from Nicaragua. Time constraints limit my options at this particular stage of the trip, yet if the choice is between a short visit to these wonderful countries or not being here at all, I certainly won´t need to phone a friend as the decision is a no brainer. I booked a seat on an international Tica Bus from San Jose across the border to Rivas in the south of Nicaragua. From there a further short taxi ride, and then a one hour ferry crossing landed me at the magical Isla de Ometepe on Lake Nicaragua, which is the largest lake in Central America. The island was formed by the lava from two large volcanoes, and Volcan Concepcion at 1610 metres is still active. It's ... read more

OK, so a few changes that need to first be mentioned in me! *1) I´m now 24 *2) I´m a whopping 30lbs less than I was when I left WOW!. I weighed myself at the airport and was only 175... Crazy stuff, I was sick for two days (over my birthday actually) but am better now and back to my ´fight´n weight! *3) I have a new hairdoo, well not yet buy I´m going to a random barber in Granada (with Ryan if he wants to laugh) picking a picture of a random spanish guy on the wall and getting my haircut just like it! No camera yet so it will be a suprise how it turns out! *4)I learned how to use the commands on my blog to create fancy lists and characters. Yay! ... read more

Well Little Corn Island officially takes the prize for the most beautiful place I have visited so far on this trip. Picture Utila except without the sand flies, without the annoying scooters and golf carts, and with better and more beaches. The closest thing the island has to a road is a 200 meter long sidewalk on their 'main strip'. Hell, when you get to the island, the closest thing they have to a dock is a makeshift set of wooden steps that they place at the front of the ponga for you to walk down. I found Jason no problem and then I was off to casa Iguana to put my pack down. It was maybe a 10 minute walk down a dirt path through the Jungle to the cabanas. While the Cabanas were not ... read more

Nicaragua is great, althoug I just left the coutry and am in Costa Rica at the moment. My first day there where in the Colonial towns, Leon and Granada. I liked it good athmosphere and frienly people, but not that much to do. Then I went to Playa Majugal, to try some surfing, but we were a bit unlukcy there with the swell, or shoul I say the lack of swell, so there where only tiny waves. The Beach was fantastic though but....one day relaxing at the beach was enough. From there I went to Isla Ometepe, an Island with 2 vulcano's. realy the end of the world, not really developed yet, and the people are the nicest in Central America I think. I hiked there one of the vulcanos in the pooring rain. so no ... read more

Wow! So exciting, today I had probably the best, and worst dive of my life! And since I haven´t done that many dives, those words should have little significance! We went out first thing this morning, and I was doing my multi level dive which allows me to calculate optimum times underwater based on the dive site we go to and nitrogen levels etc. So I planned our dive, and the teacher said I would be leading it! Wow! It was only my 6th dive so it was kind of a big deal! Anyways I was in charge of making sure everyone had enough air, all together, our depth was what we wanted, no changing depth at inapropriate times etc. I got off the boat and my BSD was messed up so I just started sinking, ... read more

Well, after meeting back up with Buber at the Bearder Monkey, Jordan and I decided that we would join him on what we thought would be a fun and exciting volcano trek. Now, perhaps I was being a little naive, but I was picturing your typical, awesome lava flowing volcano so some people may not share my disapointment with the climb. The good news was that instead of taking a $20 tour up the 'volcano', we did it on our own and the total trek ended up costing about 6 dollars. All you have to do is take a chicken bus, ask them to drop you off near Mombacho (which they pretty much know anyway cause we're white), and then follow the hill up. Starting out we imagined a nice little jaunt up a hill (again ... read more

Well I woke up this morning at 6:50AM, I stumbled out of bed, walked about 30m and dove into the clear blue carribean ocean. Thus begins my first day on little corn island. Yesterday I woke up and we wanted to get here REAL bad, it´s been our mission since the mosquito coast to find a way. We spent hours on the dock trying to find a boat, but nothing for days. We were fed up and ready to go to Granada, the guy on the dock said 3.5 hours, great we´ll be there for dinner and figure out what to do next. On the way out of our hotel the lady reminded us to get some water and food for the bus ride... OK no big deal I had 2litres of water, she said that ... read more

Well it´s official, I´m back to real path. Well sort of I guess, I don´t think a lot of people make it up to Peurto Cebezas (have to check the spelling on that) but I´m here with Warwick and Frank. We got to Nicaragua yesterday via 5 hours in a flatbed truck through dirt fields and large puddles and mud (had to push the thing for several hundred metres) and then 2 hours of boating down the Rio Coco to Wampan (sp?). Anyhow we stayed in a real shady dive last night buy enjoyed our first Nicaraguan beers. Took a bus to the coast today and it appears we will be going to Granada tommorow. Flights to Bluefields are too much and the cargo ship here doesn´t leave until Dec 23rd which is out of my ... read more

While I was suppose to head to the market with Jord on saturday, I ended up heading to Luna Apoya (or something like that) with an American I met Friday night. About an hour outside of Granada, the lake is suppose to have been at one time the top of a volcano that has now been caved in...not really sure the details. We took a shuttle, that ripped us off...always ask the price BEFORE you get in, and then hitched 30 minutes from the highway to where we were planning on staying. While I didn't get the full in the back of a pickup experience like you usually do hitching (so it seems anyway) it was a super nice family and has led me to consider doing it more often. In any case it was a ... read more
