We started early, drove through the rest of Honduras, got stopped by the police 3 times! The last ones, mother-f****rs, wanted to see our triangle, which is the little object that indicates that a car is stopped by the side of the road. Apparently those are required in Honduras. He was going to give us a fine that we would have to go back to a town about 1 hour away to pay at a bank, but instead he was "nice" enough to let us pay it unofficially directly to him. That was another 15 dollars. The Nicaraguan border was also really confusing, but it wasn´t a complete mess like the one in Honduras. Also, there were some people to help you out. Going through the border took at long time, but at least we didn´t ... read more

I´m now in a place called Granada in Nicaragua - yes I´ve pretty much steamed on through a few countries without pausing for breath... and by god the heat and humidity here is killing me slowly - totally different to Guatemala. I took a long distance bus and passed through El Salvador and Honduras to get here. I spent a night in the capital of El Salvador called San Salvador and was glad it was only one night. What a heavy going city, lots of traffic, people, smog and battered taxis pulsing through the mean streets at all hours. I stayed in a hotel called The Imperial Hotel whose electric only came on after 8pm & the same with the restaurant next door. The night before I left for Nicaragua I watched the film ´Salvador´ ... read more

So two days later Im now in Granada which is an awesome city, It seems to be so clean and the buildings here are amazing, If anyone is heading this way I recommed the Oasis backpackers. Free internet, swimming pool and a massive selection of free dvds. Met up with a couple of Kiwi mates from Costa Rica here and spent most of yesterday and today walking around checking it all out. They have some amazing churchs here. One impressive one we ventured into had glass floors and you could see an open coffin of what we guess to be an old priest. We took a stroll to the edge of Lake Nicaragua which is about 3 times the size of Lake Taupo. From here there were great views of the volcano on the lakes island. The ... read more

I guess this email wont give you a very good idea of how Nicaragua is as the last three days have been spent in Bahia Majagual. The border crossing was fine, just takes a long time for everything to go throu. Caught a taxi with Lee and Lucus, a couple that have been living in Mal Pais for 13 yrs to San Juan del Sur but they decided to cruz on to this Eco Lodge they had heard about so I tagged along. It is so outta the way by boat is pretty much the only way to get here, unless you do the big beach walk from San Juan del Sur which gets extremely hot if you've got your pack. It is however so beautiful and chilled out its hard to think ive got to ... read more

Yestrday I ventured out with Brian to see the Precolumbian exhibit of statues found in the Isletas de Granada. An outstanding exhibit, the granite statues are housed in an old (1529) Convent, built by franciscian monks. Destroyed partially by Henry Morgan and and burnt almost to the ground by William Walker hundreds of years later. Upon entring it is sugested to rince one's hands in a water and rose bud basin. B is a new travler I've been hanging with, he just finished working in the Peace Corp for 2 years in the Oso Pennesila in C.R. He and I travled to Masaya market to buy some art work. I found a stunning painting of a Nica girl gripping onto Barbed wire with the Volcano in the background, I felt the artist wanted to depict entrapment and limited exhistance lack of freedom to move forward and too far from the native rural past to turn back, I felt a strong sence of dispair in her eyes....bla bla juxaposition...bla bla.... read more

I wanted to take spanish classes, actually I still do but the one's I visited were either too gritty or far too expensive. randomly I ran accross a copy of Dostoyevsky's Las Noches Blancas (WHITE NIGHTS) so I bought it and I intend to read it in spanish to work on my language skills. I'll keep you updated. I thought the Short story may be appropiate, being a 4 day long love story here today gone tomorrow. It was a lovely night, one of those nights, dear reader, which can only happen when you are young..." ... read more

Spent the rest of the afternoon, after the blog' crazyness swinging in a hammock with the winter of our discontent and a few cold victorias. I watched part of anchorman while I ate my burrito, which brings me to a issue. I´m finding it anoying staying at the monkey for only one reason. after 4 meals here in nicaragua, I have eaten here 4 times since the food is so good, wonderfully cheap and filling and danm convinent. I recomend the tacos burritos, quesidillias and burgers. oh I just stumbled accross a quote that I had in my last travel journal. "At the end of our exploring, we will arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." - T.S. Elliot. ... read more
