Hello everyone, Hope everyone's keeping well. Well we are due to start teaching tomorrow finally, for those of you who don't know the first school we were at was only a temporary school until the larger one re-started (it was there holidays). So all this week we have been building - which was suprisingly good fun, but hard graft. We've been singing in the pit, and playing games, and getting a bit sunburnt. Plus Ed (dark hair) has been entertaining us with his questions, i.e: most recent one was 'whats the difference between a cow and a bull, other than the horns''...errr, the sex perhaps! These are the basic stages of building a house in La Esperanza: Stage 1) You have to dig a pit in the side of a hill, then using the clay you've ... read more

Hello everyone! Hope your all well. So this weekend we went to Lago de Yajoa, which took about 2 and a half hours to get there. We went on Friday afternoon and came back on Sunday. We stayed at Hotel Agua Azul, which is literally right on the lake, which is HUGE, I think its 22km long, that may be completely wrong though. The hotel was fantastic, it was in the most beautiful location and had a quite nice restaurant (though we had a couple of people feeling a bit ill after one particular meal - don't worry mum I'm fine). There was a reception and loads of different cabins - with hot showers, thank the lord! Its suprising quite how happy hot showers can make a person. Plus it had a really nice pool. The ... read more

Hello, Just a quick message... Well we arrived in La esperanza yesterday after a long long bus journey, but luckily it allowed us to see the beautiful countryside - its so hilly and green, covered in pine trees. There are 15 of us here who arrived on the same day, plus 3 guys already here, so theres a really good community feel to the place and everyones getting on really well. Me and Amy (18, very nice) got taken to our homestay, staying with Ana, Maria, Julian and Maria's 2 kids Sayar (8) and Francis (14). The house is quite nice, the rooms are far bigger than I was expecting, but its really really basic. The bathroom/toilet is an interesting one - the shower doesn't work so we have to use a 2 buckets - one ... read more

*** Travelblog's notifications haven't been sending out lately. I think this is the first one that has worked in awhile. I have still been writing though so check out past entries too! Thanks for reading! *** AMAZING WEEKEND! Yet again... filled with adventure and fun. Friday after school, Alisa, Meg, and I went to one of the bus stations in town and caught a bus that took us to La Guama. From there we got a bus to Pena Blanca and then from there caught this cute little 3 wheeled taxi thing (kind of like a golf cart but smaller) to the D & D Brewery… Honduras’ ONLY microbrewery. The plan for the weekend was to drink some good beer, eat some good food, go to a nearby waterfall, and visit the lake. What an awesome ... read more

Hello everyone, We made it to Honduras just fine and we are currently at the Copan Ruins. The town that we are staying in is really cool. All of the roads are cobblestone and there are a lot of cute cafes and shops. The town is surrounded by coffee and tobacco plantations so there is a bunch of high quality coffee and cigars in town. Today we went to see the Copan Mayan Ruins and they were really amazing. The ruins that we saw today date back to between 600 to 700 A.D. They are stacked on top of even older ruins that are now underground. There were many statues and pyramid type ruins with long stairways running up. We walked all around the complex and took way to many pictures. Tomorrow we are crossing the ... read more

So got the folks at the airport and we took a taxi back to Comayagua. I did laundry while they napped. We went through all the suitcases of things mom brought for me, including about 5 pounds of chocolate!! As well as some nice Chirstmas gifts that couldn't wait for Christmas since I would be traveling on after they left. We walked to the school got them to see where I actually work and to the Jumbo where they had thier first bag of water. We walked by the plaza and had dinner at Ricardos. The next day we went to the base. Something I was excited to do as it seemed such an off limits area to me all along. It was a mini America and I realized why it could be a good idea ... read more

Places Visited. Xela, Antigua, Copan and Tela We decided the easiest way of going about this was to head to Antigua which is just south of Xela, as when we were last there we seen lots of places advertising tours to Copan ruins. It was all very easy and the only problem was that we had to get up at 3.30am and travel for 6 hours in a very uncomfortable bus! Copan was a very pretty little town with cobble stone streets and picturesque old colonial buildings. The ruins themselves were some of the best we have seen, very ornate and lots of sculptures compared to the others we have seen in Mexico and Guatemala. The pyramids were not as huge but the site it self was impressive. We also got to see lots of macaw ... read more

Our initial plan for Honduras was certainly more than it turned out to be. We blitzed the journey from the border North in order to go to the Bay Islands - tropical paradises with amazing and cheap diving, only to realise that the weather was terrible and there is nothing worse than being on a sandy island in the rain! So instead we went straight to Copan, a famous site of Mayan Ruins. We were slightly delayed in the morning of our second day as we had to get a police report for the things that were stolen from Sallys rucksack on the bus the night before. The cheeky buggars took her sandals and flip flops, fleece, ski jacket and also strangely her bikini bottoms and contact lenses! Never mind, we were not harmed and we ... read more
