Hey everyone, it feels like ages since I last used a computer but I guess it hasn´t been that long. Hmmm, what has been happening lately, the days seem to all blur together. We had some interesting nights out in Coban, you can´t really call it going out though because we were pretty much the only people around. One bar we went to, offered a selection of possibly stolen electronics and appliances to browse while you drank your beer. The gun-weilding bar tender/host/cook/DJ/waiter was nice enough though. We had a few beers there amongst the dead palm tree in the corner, the broken disco ball, and the egg-carton covered walls, and a table of locals. Good times. The next night we went to another little 'bar' down the street from out hotel, it was more or ... read more

The group took a 12 hour bus ride to Lake Atitlan on 12th day of our Guatemala Encompassed tour - rumour has it there was a 5 hour bus route but that this road is patrolled by hijackers. Lake Atitlan (or Lago de Atitlan in Spanish) is Guatemala’s number one tourist attraction due to its scenic excesses - a bevy of towering volcanoes, rolling hills and small traditional Mayan lakeside villages surround this lake which appears blue through grey to green depending on the position of the sun. The lake is itself a collapsed volcano that at its deepest point is 320m deep and with no visible outlet it discharges its contents to the Pacific via a vast network of underground caverns. We arrived a little behind schedule at about 6pm. This meant that our boat ... read more

Another person in our house has fallen ill. This morning we went to learn to dance salsa, only to have Mona begin to feel sick. I actually learned some, but I still feel stupid trying to dance. Essentially every Guatemalan possesses hidden dancing capabilities-then you ask if they can dance, and they say "No, no..." then five seconds later proceed to engage in crazy salsa dancing splendor. So yes. A lot of our group actually picked up the steps quite quickly and were salsa-ing about the room in glee while I just kind of stared in disbelief. Last night we convinced our host brother, Christian, that it would be SO FUN if he brought four gringas to a discotequeuejdndnds tonight. There's no salsa, luckily, and from what I understand it's a lot of electronica. He's really ... read more

On Saturday morning 19 students gathered around the doors of the school and we waited for Luis Enrique (he works for the school) to get his shuttle bus ready and we headed to Panajachel. After a great bit of traffic we finally made it. I quickly took them to the hotel and organized all the people who wanted to go to visit Julia’s cooperative - La Asociacion de Lideres de Mujeres (de Solola) - which is in a tiny rural community just above the small town of Solola. Julia Par, along with Maria Toc and other ladies of the cooperative, took us into the office/home of Julia. There she spoke to all 13 students about the origins, purpose, and goals of the cooperative and I translated. Afterwards the students checked out some of the products and ... read more

Beautiful Lake Atitlan!!!!

6/19/06 A few facts about Lago de Atitlan that I didn´t have time to mention: The lake is very calm in the morning, almost like glass and then in the afternoons is very rough. According to my guide book, the Mayans believe that their god (or one of their gods) is accepting a drowned soul into the lake, hence the roughness every afternoon. Very interesting! The lake is an old volcanic crater that is enormous! The views are spectacular. And it is still hard to wrap my mind around the poverty that surrounds such a beautiful natural phenomena. After walking around San Pedro La Laguna, we took a boat to Panajachel, bought bus tickets for the ride back (got a little queasy on both ways of the trip for about 20 minutes, urgh! but all went ... read more

Well, I made it. Barely. The plane rides were quite fun, I particuarly enjoyed being ABOVE the cloud layer, where the sky is the most amazing hallmarky shade of blue. I also got to see Aquamarine The Flight to G. City was not the best. A small Guatemalan child thought it would be fun to attack my seat with plastic camels and scream bloody murder. Somehow, thought, we arrived and managed to fight our way through the masses of Guatemalan people to a tiny minibus. Do remember at this point that we had been flying for about seven hours. They neglected to mention that the bus ride was FIVE HOURS. Even longer because we had to stop and eat The thing about Guatemala? Everyone stares at us. Or, in the case of some of the males, ... read more

I am writing from Lago de Atitlan, the most beautiful lake I have ever been to surrounded by volcanos and tiny villages. We took a bus from Antigua to Panajachel (about 3 hrs) and then a boat ride across the lake to San Marco, a quiet island whose focus was yoga, massages, and inner peace. There is no other way to describe it than breathtaking! It´s how I imagine Hawaii is but with less people and more time to think. The village maybe has 100-150 people in it, most if not all are Mayan, carrying baskets on their heads in typical Mayan clothing. By the way, not sure if I´ve mentioned how tall I feel here, but quite honestly I feel like a giant. It´s great!!! (brooke w.- can´t imagine how tall you felt!) The 3 ... read more

I call it a black hole because San Pedro is the type of place that pulls you in and keeps you, for longer than you intended. I can feel the pull of S.P. getting stronger by the day. The hostel I am staying in here is quite nice. It´s the kind of place where you could sit around all day and just hang out with whoever happens to be there at the time and it never seems strange. There is a pleasant outside open area where everyone just chills out all the time. It really is quite nice to relax for a few days. I simply can´t get over how beautiful it is here on Lago de Atitlan. Everyday I walk on the road near the lake and everyday I am just floored by the beautiful ... read more
