After a bit of a fiasco with buses, we made it out of Flores a day later than we'd planned. There was no direct bus to Lake Atitlan, where we meant to go to next so we decided to go to Antigua first instead. As we had to go through Guatemala city, it was a chance to get a good look at the place from a mini bus window; once we changed bused in the main terminal. Guatemala city has a bad rep, and everyone I spoke to who had been there said not to bother with it, so I was surprised to see how modern and nice it looked. In my head I had it as a real run down shanty town, and though its a bit like that at the edges it looks quite ... read more

In all honesty, I really felt like our travel came to a close with our hike up the volcano and the day trip from Antigua. By the time we got to Lago de Atitlan, I was ready to curl up in a hammock, read, get caught up on e-mails and relax. It was a great place for that. The town is very low key. Lots of Spanish schools, which ironically meant that everyone spoke a little English. We stayed at the Hotel Sakcari . Nice place with nice rooms. My time there consisted of doing very little. We hung out at Cafe Zoola, I went kayaking at least twice a day, and once we got situated, really enjoyed the little town. Our arrival was somewhat chaotic, every other individual offering us 'information.' Once we settled down ... read more

I am on my break from lessons with Odillia. I just love her. It is great, though my mind gets very tired after a while because everything is Spanish. If I don´t know a word, she explains it in Spanish. If I don´t understand grammar, she explains it again in Spanish. This weekend was a GREAT break. On Friday, after Craig made us a delicious bbq lunch, we left for the lake. Once we got to Panajachel, we crossed the lake to San Pedro. It was raining, but it was still SO BEAUTIFUL. I already love mountains anywhere as a result of living in the flattest place on earth, but it is so beautiful there. We went with the boys to a hostel-hotel called Zoola, which is Hebrew for a place of tranquility. One night, a ... read more

Here are some pictures I grabed from some of the other travelers I have been with in the days after the camera. Enjoy. San pedro is amazing still and so is school. The classes are moving really fast. I am now studying for six hours a day. Last Thursday for Dom´s 35th birthday we all did staches and went to town on the hair gel. Great times. Friday... went out to the bars and afterwards experienced something I hope to never see again and I will make this short with few details. Late that night we went out to the bars and had ourselves a good time, until coming across a man who had been shot in the head and twice in the body. The tourists were the first to get there while the police arrived ... read more

**Hello friends and family! I am writing from my new apartment in Placencia, Belize, and hoping to spend some time catching you all up on my latest adventures! *Latest* starting...six months ago! I have a lot to share with you from underwater, in caves, and even some new countries visited! I think of you all often, and hope you are happy from head to toe! I hope you enjoy the stories and I will see all of you sometime very soon!** The Rio Dulce adventure dropped us into the town of the same name, at the mouth of Lake Isabel. Still known by its old city name, Frontera was the Guatemalan city that I was expecting and our first taste of this colorful culture! The vegetable stands were full of lush colors and monster size onions, ... read more

I am in San Pedro in Lago de Atitlan, Guatemala. I spent about a week and a half in Granada, Nicaragua doing a homestay/ spanish course. It was great and I got at ton of really great pictures. The city is really amazing with big colonial buildings. We were there for the end of a poetry festival and got to see a parade, concerts, and tons of daily activities. My host family was really great, but the spanish was really difficult because no one spoke a lick of english. Very hard to explain things when something isn´t understood. Miriam left that same week for Costa Rica before the return flight to Germany. Martin and I gained another traveller, Femke, who was staying with the same family as us. In less than twenty four hours she had ... read more

Lake Atitlan, once said to be the most beautiful lake on earth by Aldous Huxley, offers up an array of lake side town options which you can make your base. We opted for San Pedro as the main alternative San Marcos was billed as Hippie Ville. Rik the slightly Bohemian, and highly fascinating, Welsh potter we’d met a few days earlier whilst hiking up Volcano Pacaya had even given San Marcos a bad billing dismayingly telling us about the various places selling the opportunity to communicate with aliens via telepathy. Not having anything seriously against Gringo Hippies on tour (we’re sure they’re truly delightful folk) we decided it probably wasn’t our scene and so to refrain from San Marcos and also any related alien communications. We found San Pedro had one major thing going for it. ... read more
