I'm thankful: 1.) that I can leave my house, walk 2 minutes, and buy freshly squeezed orange juice. 2.) for friends from around the world with whom to share a very special Thanksgiving meal. 3.) that I spent the morning of Thanksgiving outside in the sun celebrating Christmas with the women, adolescents, and children of the Nuevos Horizantes shelter. 4.) for a really fun camping trip this week with 50 kids from Caras Alegres, the amazing staff, in beauitful Panajachel. 5.) that I can walk around the city and look up to beautiful mountains and volcanoes. (And that I will be going on a hike up a mountain in 15 minutes.) 6.) for fresh produce in the market outside my house where we can buy fresh tomatos and platanos (and freshly made tortillas) to make our ... read more

"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things presnt, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39 These verses are so beautiful, and I have also found them to be true. Sometimes, we just try to work for this love or we feel that we are not worthy of this love, but God really does love us. I sensed this to be so true as my friend and I took a few days to travel this week. We went to Flores in Northern Guatemala to visit the Mayan Ruins called Tikal, and then we spent a day relaxing on Rio Dulce in a ... read more

I am loving the opportunity to get to know so many different people here. It is incredible. I am living with 3 Guatemaltecos, a girl from Switzerland, and a girl from Germany. Sometimes our house has 3 languages going at one time. It is so much fun. Our two good friends (and fellow Caras volunteers) from Holland left last Saturday after extending their time in Xela by 2 weeks. I am still in contact with my host family that I used to live with- went there for dinner last week and to visit my host mom yesterday. And, I absolutely adore my Spanish teacher and her family. This is just an overview of some of the important people in my life here. God is so creative in the creation of people. This week, I had a ... read more

Another week has already passed, and tomorrow is November. This week was a really fun week at Caras Alegres. Tuesday was the graduation of the preschoolers and the women who had been studying for 6th grade. We had a ceremony, and all the graduates received diplomas. It was really powerful to see these women accept their certificates with huge smiles. The women from the literacy course also received certificates. Caras Alegres is really having an impact on this community, and I'm so thankful to be a small part of it. We also made kites and costumes this week with the kids. Then yesterday, we had the fiesta de cumpleanos, kite competition, and costume competition. It was really fun, and the kites actually flew which was a surprise to me. In Nuevos Horizantes, I am still enjoying ... read more

I am enjoying this beautiful Saturday in Xela with my door and window open, fresh air blowing in, and catching up on some rest! I just wanted to write about some of the great people I have met in Xela. Pablo is the taxi driver that took me to the airport at 2:30AM last week to pick up my parents. We spent about 1 1/2 hours of our drive talking about life, our faith, our families, etc. Then, I slept. When we got to the capital, I offered him more money, breakfast, and lunch to stay with me and take us back to Xela with him. We parked the car, and sat in the parking garage discussing our differences in beliefs for about an hour, ate breakfast at some stands on the street, and enjoyed our ... read more

I really want to share this email that my dad wrote about their trip to Guatemala-it highlights things that I don't usually think about :) Me llamo Bruce. Hola !! Karen and I went to visit Steffi in Guatemala. We were there last Tuesday thru Saturday. Here is a quick run down of the events. We arrived Tuesday morning at 11:30 Guat time. Steffi met us there with a cab driver. She picked us with a cab rather than a bus because there were protest which shut down main highways. She took a cab from XELA to Guatemala City leaving at 2:30 AM Tuesday in order to arrive before the highway shut down. The thought was the roads would be open around 1 o'clock in the afternoon. This did not happen as we were stopped twice ... read more

"What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us."-Helen Keller I read this in a tourism magazine during my trip back from Antigua today. My parents had been here since Tuesday, and we stayed in Antigua last night for them to catch a shuttle to the airport. This quote really resonated with me following their visit in my beloved Guatemala :) I am so thankful that my family, my home, my friends, AU, and Sharon are a part of me. Being with mom and dad for a week(ish) was a great reminder of how blessed I have been to be shaped by some incredible people, to be raised by my wonderful parents. Also, being in Guatemala, I was thinking about how exciting it is that this ... read more

Hi everyone! I just wanted to write to let everyone know that I'm planning on staying in Xela until mid-December. Caras Alegres ends December 11, and I know that I am not ready/not meant to leave yet-I want to finish the year out with them. I'm a little nervous, but after a lot of prayer, I am confident that I am meant to stay for another month. Thanks for all your prayers and love. Today I was going for a run (during the afternoon because THERE WAS NO RAIN- aMAZING), and the sun was starting to set. I was running uphill for awhile (barely breathing haha), and then I came to a point where I could see all these beautiful mountains in the distance. The sun was starting to set so there was some pink and ... read more

I spent last week traveling about Guatemala. First, I went to Parramos which is the pueblo that I went to church in last year when I was studying in Antigua. I went to church and spent the night with the pastor's family. It was such an AMAZING time. I hadn't seen them in almost a year and a half, but it seemed like no time had past. They are such welcoming and caring people. In July, Barnabe and Nirma had another baby who has a rare blood disease so Nirma and the baby are living in a hospital in Guatemela city so she can be monitored, and Bernabe and the kids are still in Parramos. They have been living like this for almost 2 months, and it seems that they will be continuing to live like ... read more

Felicidades a Guatmeala! Yesterday was Independence Day here- 189 years of freedom. This whole week, I have thought a lot about freedom. This week I went to Palabra en Accion for church with Julietta and Carlos from my house. It was such the perfect service for me to hear. The pastor was talking about the freedom we have in Christians. He talked about different ways that we respond to freedom. Some of us prefer to live under the law and make strict rules and standards for ourselves. Some of use our "freedom" to serve ourselves and do what we want to do. Some of us are able in some periods of our life to receive freedom in faith. True freedom is understanding that I am loved and worthy without doing anything. True freedom is expressed in ... read more
