Things have been great here on the lake...we took the ferry across to Panajachel for the day 2 days ago and walked around. There are some very neat little trinkets and things. Mom, I got you a new bracelet, haha. Yesterday, our friends and us rented kayaks and we went to San Marco to go swimming, across the lake. It was beautiful. We pulled up on some rocks and just dove in! Wow! Beautiful sunshine and water...it was just perfect. Then we spent the afternoon at one of the restaurants on the dock playing cards and having a good laugh. Last night we went out for happy hour for 2 for 1 mojitos...they were amazing! I dont normally like mojitos but these were delicious. We´ve been playing lots of cards and darts. Mom, you´ll have to ... read more

So yesterday we got on the 3pm bus from Antigua to come to San Pedro on Lago de Atitlan. We got here after sun down so needless to say we woke up to one BIG surprise. The mountains here are unbelievable. Its like a dream... We´re staying in a pretty nice little spot overlooking the lake. This little town is very hippy like and very small. We´re going to take the ferry boat over to the main city, Panajachel, and walk around today. We met a few people last night staying at our hotel and had a few drinks with them. One was from Montreal and the other from Germany. They´ve gone to a few places that we´re thinking of going to, so they had some good tips for us. Nothing much else to report. We´re ... read more

San Pedro, love it or hate it, you can't deny it has the best food in the whole of Guatemala. Oh, what heaven to find Thai curry and a roast beef dinner so far from home! Ok, not very authentic but certainly what the doctor ordered for Xmas and a real treat. Rocking up to Yarachik, I met a really nice group of girls and we spent an indulgent 10 days gorging ourselves on all San Pedro had to offer. The village itself is pretty low-key and filled with friendly locals, the small lanes near the shore are packed with gringo centered restaurants and bars adorned with dreamcatchers and blaring trance or Bob Marley. Though you can be just as likely to be sharing the internet cafe with a local man in traditional clothing as another ... read more

Markets in Guatemala are colourful and bustling. From the Aladdin´s Cave that is the indoor market in Panajachel to the hectic Friday morning affair in Solola or the fruit and veg stalls lining the streets of San Pedro - the sights and sounds make Dublin´s Moore Street seems subdued. These markets around the Lake Atitlan attract traders in traditional dress from the surrounding highland villages who come and sell everything and anything you can think of. While staying on the Lake Atitlan, the markets have been a great source for our daily dose of avocadoes, bananas and tortillas. Lake Atitlan is a spectacular setting - framed by three volcanoes against a backdrop of lush green hills. Inspiring stuff...so inspiring James hit the oils! With Gaspar, a local artist from San Pedro as his guide, James created ... read more

Hello family, friends, and fans! I have left Quetzaltenango and am happily situated at Lago Atitlàn. Now I feel like I'm on vacation. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy my time at Xela, but afterall, it is the second largest city in Guatemala and I am just not a city gal! Lago Atitlàn has the feel of Kootenay Lake back home. I have settled into a funky town of San Pedro La Laguna. The waterfront street is nicknamed "Gringo corner" and it feels just like someone teleported the city of Nelson here. Dreadlocks and macrame jewellery abound. Feel like having a stir-fry or falafel for lunch? No problem, just follow the scent of Nag-champa incense and you're bound to find a taste of home. What to do?...I am the tourist who doesn't really care to ... read more

Lake Atitlan is renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and Aldous Huxley famously wrote of it: "Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing." It is surrounded by volcanoes on all sides and has a scattering of Mayan villages on its borders. During the Guatemalan civil war, the lake was the scene of many terrible human rights abuses, as the government pursued a scorched earth policy. Indigenous people were assumed to be universally supporters of the guerrillas who were fighting against the government, and were targeted for brutal reprisals. First trivia that I picked up from a threesome of older American hippies waiting for the small ... read more

After Xela (Quetzaltenango) we traveled to San Pedro La Laguna, a small town by Lago Atitlan. The place had a good vibe. It was very chill and hip. There were quite a few travelers here, but it didn't feel touristy. There's an area where it feels like you're going through a maze. Businesses and restaurants are located through these narrow alleys. Kind of cool. Local people here were very friendly. I felt comfortable hanging out in this town. Homer and I decided to hike a nearby mountain called La Nariz del Indio (The Indian's Nose). To reach the summit it takes an estimated time of 3 hours. We made it in about 2 1/2.....exhausted. The hike is a challenging winding uphill climb. The summit is over 6,500 feet above sea level. The view was AWESOME! On ... read more
