We finished the spanish school a few weeks ago and since then have been cathing up on travelling around the country. Strangely enough this involved more physical activity as we signed up for 3 back to back hikes. The first was a 3 day hike to Lake Atitlan, an extinct volcano crater, which is now, a huge lake surrounded by other volcanoes. It was a great hike but very tiring (35 miles in total); we got to see some beautiful scenery and great sunsets and sunrises. The lake itself was stunning and you will have to go on the net to have a look. Whilst there we stayed at a backpacking town called San Pedro, which is known for its hippies and marijuana. We must have been asked about 10 times a day if we wanted ... read more

After viewing a few friend's blogs I realized how absolute crap mine was and I ought to update more often and with a little more.... care. Here we go. I've been here on Lago de Atitlan at San Pedro for 5 nights, 6 days. Needless to say, it's gorgeous. Downright fricken gorgeous. It's been fun enough staying at the "Hotel Mansion del Lago" and I thought I'd want to stick around longer for language classes, but the almost constant cold and rain are driving me away. Plus, a few backpackers I met in Flores have shown up and keep pestering me... one is trying to leech on. Yikes. Lago de Atitlan is about 3 hours away from Antigua by way of shuttle bus. Once you arrive in Panajachel, aka Hippieville, you hop on a lancha across ... read more

Guatemaltecos are super friendly and helpful, and everybody from little kids to old women says buenos or hola (or Utz ´a watch in Maya) as you pass in the streets. It is an an interesting juxtaposition that guatemala has seen some of the worst violence this planet dishes out and yet the people are so welcoming and softspoken. It is hard for me to imagine these people engaging in violence. Which makes sense because these people, local mayans, were the victims not perpetrators, of the violence. I like Guatemalan hand shakes...they are soft and warm, opposite the firm, tight, confident, (aggressive?) greetings of north americans. Does this say something about the respective cultures? Guatemala is more reserved and conservative than mexicans. You don´t see the same fiesta spirit that I saw in mexico. Mayan women don´t ... read more

Hey all! Whoops it´s been a while. I was just reading the last entry where I said if all goes to plan the next blog will be from Bolivia..... well we are now in Guatemala and have been for a week. So what have we been doing for the last month. After the Colca Canyon we headed to Puno. Again after a bit of research we decide we didn´t want to do one of the traditional tours to the Uros (floating reed islands), Tequille or Amantani, so we arranged our own rather pricey tour to Llachon penisula. Sadly, we had a bit of a falling out with the tour agancy, but all´s well that ends well, and seeing that we and the guide were free, we went ahead with the tour without the middleman. Llachon was ... read more

I know, I am really lazy, but sorry, I´ve been living and not wasting my spare time on the internet. Things are going here, new adventures (which are often always the same) happen daily. I remember one morning, we left here (Xela) at 8 am on a Saturday morning. It was almost still dark out and clouds filled the views, giving everyone awake slight chills. We made our way to the bus terminal, a grudgey, gross place and a long ugly walk from where one urban mini-bus drops you off to the massive bus Terminal called Minerva. Here you can find buses going almost anywhere in Guatemala. That day we were going to Lake Atitlan. As we came out from the heart of the highlands, to just a little bit lower (though not too much, still ... read more

The Lake is an amazing place with beautiful views and a peaceful air about it; however it wasn’t what I was expecting. I definitely wasn’t expecting San Pedro, it took me by surprise. I’d followed some friends out here and by the time I got here they were partied out and leaving the following day. I thought to myself, ´give it a couple of days and I’ll be off too´. Especially as the first sights I saw where scary hollow faced bearded hippies. It was like being at Glastonbury days after the event has ended, where most people have gone and only the serious (permanent) casualties walk around like lost ghosts. But then I chilled right the hell out, right the hell out and stayed for 8 days. I mostly ate, drank smoked and slept with ... read more

Well the last 2 weeks have been pretty mad. Much drinking and dancing. It's been great but I'm starting to think that the big nights or the hangovers in the morning have been impacting on my ability to learn Spanish. I've made a great little group of friends from all over which I've been having a ball with. The only problem was that we basically ended up in a bar every night. But the salsa clubs were great. Basically you would walk in and guys would ask you to dance. And the best part was that most of them didn't try anything they genuinely just wanted to dance. It was a lot of fun but difficult because Guatemalian men in general are really short & I mean maybe my shoulder height short, so some of the ... read more

For our change of scenery after our week of city life in Antigua we chose to visit one of Guatemala's largest lakes and stay in one of the small villages on its shores. San Pedro was a bus and boatride away from Antigua and we were there by lunchtime. We were greeted off the boat by the usual group of people touting for their hotels and got chatting to one whilst we had some lunch by the quay (using our newly developed Spanish skills!!) and he offered us a double room for 20 Quetzals which equates to about 1.40 in English pounds! An offer to cheap to refuse we went to check it out; needless to say it wasn't what you would call luxury accomodation but then Guatemala isn't really a 5* holiday destination. We also ... read more

yesterday carolina and i met early and took a boat over to san marcos for a yoga class....san marco´s is one of the other villages along the lake. the class was amazing! three hours of yoga...in beautiful san marcos. it felt great to challenge my body and to practice with others. then, last night carolina and i met for a movie (tsotsi). we were standing at the bar waiting for our tea when i noticed a display of cookies...there were chocolate cookies, peanut butter cookies and space cookies. neither of us had ever had a space cookie....so we decided to try one. since it was our first time, the bartender suggested that we share a cookie. about an hour into the movie carolina asked me if i was feeling anything. and neither of us were feeling ... read more

hola amigos! i just logged on to post some pictures. hope you enjoy them. sunday we had a "school trip" to chichicastenango for the native mayan market. it is one of the largest markets in the mayan area. for more info visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chichicastenango. it was a bit crazy...lots of people...lots of energy....lots of textiles and crafts. i enjoyed it, but i tend to get a bit suffocated in large crowds. it was a chilly day in chichi, so a few of us took a break from the crowd and sat in an open air coffee shop with warm beverages. i enjoyed the view of the market from this perspective. we were cozy and spacious in the coffee shop, yet the energy of the market was surrounding us. later on sunday night we played pub trivia...our group ... read more
