This past weekend was my first weekend off since I started working here, so I decided to go to Lago Atitlán, namely San Pedro La Laguna for some cheap relaxation. We got into San Pedro around 8 pm and quickly found our hostel for only $2 per night, right by the shores of the lake. Then we went and found a bar/restaurant and after ordering our dinner, we took shots of tequila and started the night off right. Waking up on Saturday morning feeling pretty shitty, we went to hang out on the rocks by the water and swim and lay in the sun. It was great! When you´re lying on a comfortable rock (and I do have MY rock) chilling in the sun with a beautiful blue lake, lush mountains all around, and 3 active ... read more

We spent the day wondering how to get to Antigua. We wanted to be there by the end of the day, but it's all the way across the other side of the country. We were prepared to make the 10 hour overnight bus journey if it came down to the crunch, but I'd developed a nasty cold over night and was feeling pretty awful. We decided to go to the airport in Santa Elena and enquire about plane tickets and knew that they ranged from $60-80 and even up to $130. A local met started hassling us at the airport telling us tickets were $130 but he could get them for $110 if we came to his travel agency. When we went into the airport to enquire at the desk, he beat us there and started ... read more

Religion in Guatemala
Hilly San Pedro Road

Religion is big in central America, very big. So it came as no surprise that a event like Easter (for christianity based faiths) would be a big event. The week leading up to Easter Sunday is called Semana Santa, are many places here celebrate it. The biggest celebrations are in Antigua where hotels are booked up well in advance. Subsquently I went to Santiago Atitlan for Good Friday where I was told they also go fairly crazy. I arrived fairly early in the day and made my way up to the centre of town, I realised I had possibly arrived a little too early as the alfombras (carpets) were in their infancy. A large square around the central church was marked off. This was followed be someone marking a chalk outline of the different images on ... read more

Fellow Gringos, The past few days have been exiting. We have traveled to many smaller towns up and around the Highlands in Guatemala. One stop was Chichicastenango. This town has the largest street market in Guatemala. Walking through the streets one will see street vendors selling corn tortilla with meat, ice cream carts, shoe shiners with a small black tool box, and a variety of handy crafts such as wooden animal masks and bright colored blankets. There is an endless amouant of jewlery and the seller is aggresive. The hotels have been nice. The rooms typically have two small beds and a small table. The walls are usually barren, but some have Mayan art framed above the beds. The day starts around 6:30 am and the hustle is very loud. The cobble stone steets have no ... read more

Die Nase ... read more

Heute waren wir ... read more

Hi ! We are in Guatemala at the moment. We had a really pleasant border crossing and were lucky enough to meet up with an Italian couple and travelled the whole way with them. We decided against the gruelling chicken bus journey and paid the more luxury option and caught a mini van (almost door to door!). We headed down to Panajachel, to catch a boat across the lake to our next planned week long stop. We have now at the lake side village of San Pedro. Lake Atilan is a massive lake around 17km wide, clear (quite cold waters) with really hippy type laid back Gringo hangouts! We are staying at a lovely new hotel called Mikaso. It is low season and so we managed to get the price down to $4/night each !!! Room ... read more

Zoolas. San Pedro

OK, let me catch everyone up on what's going down in San Pedro. Sunday afternoon two guys from Australia showed up to take classes at Mayab´ Spanish School. One of the guys (Peter) is staying at the Puac household with me and his buddy Tom is staying two doors down. Peter and Tom had met a couple from Switzerland during their travels and they are all surfing their way down the West coast. Monday night was Peter's 21st Birthday so everyone went out to celebrate. Monday night Elena prepared dinner early so we could get the night started. We all met down at Nick's Place and sang Happy Birthday in Spanish to Peter, who is by far the youngest in the group by about 4-5 years. Peter thought it would hurt his chances with the women, ... read more
