Have you ever stood in the breeze up a hill and stared at the sky, those moments of Devine peace when you exhale pain and inhale forgiveness. Just 20 minutes out of Antigua town I stand, gazing at the full moon, Fuego volcano erupting in the back ground, Venus and Jupiter alining in the sky above us. The calm, the energy, it blew me away. Those once in a lifetime experiences are why I travel, there where I find my release. Never have I seen the earths core blowing out of an active volcano, I mean how many people actually experience these things. It makes you wonder suddenly, how varst and insane Mother Earth truly is. How beautiful, how unexplainable. Our inner emotions, our daily struggle peril in insignificance when the sky, the moon, the stars, ... read more

After a slightly underwhelming experience on the Corn Islands, it was time to move on to pastures new. Before this, however, was the small matter of a night in Nicaragua’s capital Managua, another 30 hour bus journey and a stopover in San Salvador, El Salvador’s notoriously rough capital. As we had one night to waste in another grimy inner city before we could set off (due to having missed a bus by a matter of minutes after our German friend asked a taxi to stop for rum en route) we decided to book into a hotel within the bus terminal as the area around didn’t look too inviting. We scraped together enough spare change to afford a meal of rice and an unidentified meat that was mainly fat and gristle, set our alarms for 4am and ... read more

I am not going to lie, I predicted the last two weeks of this trip were not going to be our favorite stops and it is proving to be true with the exception of San Diego and Cabo San Lucas. Today’s port was super industrial although they had an attractive area at the pier for shopping. Many arts and crafts vendors were in residence and although I found their goods attractive, didn’t buy a thing. We have no room to bring anything else home so we will not be buying anything else from here on in. Saw some iguanas near the shore and other than that not much to do unless you travel 50 miles to see Antigua. The temperature today was in the nineties so we were happy to spend most of our time on ... read more

We hitchhiked part way to the border of Mexico-Guatemala. I have a current bout of stomach upset (the polite way to put it) and was low on energy as we mounted our bags onto our backs for the first time in over 4 weeks. Bouts of sickness come and go for us, they've rarely been a problem in Mexico, more an irritation. We have the Nepali experience as a benchmark, so anything else is child's play. Lots of people stopped to offer rides; trucks and families alike, and we went with a family going to more or less our destination. 20 minutes later, we were back on the side of the road. Either they didn't like the slight sweatiness we bought to their car, or there'd been miscommunication of their route. I like to think the ... read more

Distance driven today: 184 miles / 296 km Cumulative distance driven: 6,476 miles / 10,422 km Today’s trip: Huehuetenango to Guatemala City, Guatemala Indigenous masks bought for Christer’s collection: 1 Entering Guatemala, through the northwest region, also means that the entire road infrastructure quality dropped a few notches compared to Mexico. At the same time as the poverty level in the villages along the road became starkly visible. But perhaps the most noticeable change is the fact that the average driving speed immediately dropped to 30mph / 50km/h. This is primarily due to all the slow moving trucks, endless curves, constant grades thought the hills and mountains, and the complete lack of any chance to overtake other vehicles (even when driving a motorcycle!). Up until southern Mexico I could easily ride 250-400 miles / 400-650 km ... read more

Antigua is the old capital of Guatemala. It is a pretty city around an hour away from Guatemala City with the vibe of southern Spain. It has cobbled little lanes and is surrounded by volcanoes- mainly being overlooked by volcan de Agua on the south side of the city. It is really tourist central for Guatemala but has definitely been one of my favourite cities of the trip so far. Antigua is one of those cites that you could wonder around for weeks and still managed to find something to do. It has a lots of old , ruined churches which have not been restored and more modern churches, cathedrals and buildings, some of which have been turned into hotels and restaurants. Along with this I found the Cerro du Cruz which is a cross on ... read more

After 6 and a half years of being together, Mal and I tied the knot in October 2014. Instead of taking a conventional one or two week honeymoon to one destination just after the wedding, we decided to leave it a few months, save up and take more of an extended trip. After a little deliberation of destinations (Australia, the Caribbean and various countries in Central America) we decided we weren't content on visiting just one country and we settled on travelling around Central America for a month if possible (depending if we could get the time off from work). Originally we put together a little plan of travel consisting of all of the countries in Central America but then we realised one month would be pushing it a little to see all of them in ... read more

Located inside of Filadelfia Coffee Estate - which is a large coffee planation as well as a factory with available tours, test tastings and a delicious restaurant to eat at- is another kind of adventure for those whom don't fear heights. The Canopy Tour's provide two options for that bucket list zip lining experience through the forest and/or between Canyons. You can sign up for the Forest Express which allows you to take upon seven different zip lines that gradually become longer and higher. The last one on this course option drops down a 40 foot line across the tree line - it was amazing! Or if you are more adventurous and want to experience a much longer and higher zip line thrill then the Canyon Express is perfect for you! This particular package that they ... read more

Holy week in Antigua, Guatemala is one of the most beautiful religious celebrations known in America. Not only has it's creation of luxurious carpets made up of colorful sawdust, flowers, and fruits become tradition for Antigua civilization during Semana Santa, "Easter Week", but it's religious grandiose homage to Jesus and his crusificition via Guatemalan artisans man made 'andas' (floats), statues and elegant robes proves that lent in Antigua, Guatemala leads to a true spiritual and cultural opportunity for one. In Guatemala, processions (or as they would say, procesiones) occur during Holy Week and Lent. During my stay in Antigua, Guatemala I was privileged enough to personally view Antigua's Catholic celebration commemorating Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Have I ever been one with strong faith and core beliefs when it comes to religion? No, not ... read more

We got to Antigua knowing full well that we were getting there in time for Semana Santa, 'Holy Week' or the week of Easter. Being a very catholic part of the country it was a very important week and there were many things going on. We booked our hostel late and would have to leave Thursday, before all the big festivities since everyone (maybe their dog, and cats, and rats, and spiders too) would be coming to celebrate in the big city and there was no room in the inn. With little time in town we knew we should get a move on using the first day to orient ourselves. That night we had a chance to witness a procession, which is like a parade where the fraternity that is in charge of a certain saint ... read more
