So it happened. I finally caught an iguana. Not only that, but it came up to ME!!! Soo sweet. Now more doors have opened for my study. I've been here 2 months and only seen basilisks. With the hope of more iguanas, I might be able to compare the two like I had originally hoped. This is all pending that I find more.... (I hope so). I am really tired of basilisks, they can all go as far as I'm concerned, bring on the iguanas. I saw a cock fight today (not our fault or request, twas a miscommunication). And saw another student behead a chicken. Now that was strange. I know I could never do that myself but I can still eat the resulting soup. Go figure... Started/continued LOTR trilogy, now that Potter is long ... read more

I'm finding the snake stuff more interesting. Seriously, I think I might want to do snake studies as well. Maybe a population survey of eyelash vipers on the station property. That could be cool. I've learned a lot down here, and learn more each day. And they still think I love snickers... PS - Hungry? Why wait!?... read more

I have not updated my blog in about 10 days for a variety of reasons which you’ll read about. Also, PLEASE NOTE: Some of this week’s entry is rated “P.G.” (not so bad really—but you are forewarned! I took a short break from Angel Valley Farm B&B for five days to do a Pacific Coast road trip. I traveled with new friends Joe and Jen (not quite married yet), and Jen’s Uncle Ed. Joe and Jen started on July 4, managing “Vida Tropical,” our sister B&B in Alajuela, near the airport. Jen’s Uncle Ed is considering retiring here. There are some pictures interspersed throughout this entry of the road trip. We did the entire trip by bus. Let me talk about the buses here. Yes, Central American buses can be brutal. Having had experience with buses ... read more

Buenas Tardes mis amigos! Me encanta Manuel Antonio. Finalmente pura vida! So, I moved from my panoramic ocean view and lazy hammock to my Costa Rican family down in el barrio de Boca Vieja. Its definitely a change from the "upper east side". Sin embargo, I'll be able to practice my Spanish all day long. I began my Spanish classes at D'Amore yesterday and was happy to see that I wasn't the oldest one in class!!!! However, there are lots of young 20's around. The class is challenging and I actually spent 2 hours yesterday reviewing my verb usage as I had completely forgotten how to use anything except present and past tense. ugh! So, what have I been doing since Saturday? Absolutely nothing! I've gone to the beach everyday to boogie board, swim or just ... read more

I forgot to mention in the last entry that we have formed a band of archers. Well, two, D and I. He wanted to try a bow out so I helped him make a few. They worked ...okay. The best part was talking out of like LOTR or Robin Hood or Potter or anything haha. It was a nice light day, really appreciated in the middle of the rainforest and all, you know?? We had a battle cry... "Bah-gaah!" It was I guess like a rooster call but I actually got it from a robot character from Futurama, Roberto. He always said "hah-hahh!" everytime he stabbed with his knife. It was a good time (no, we weren't drinking... yet). This afternoon I fed the viper and cleaned out its cage. And I strengthened my bow string. ... read more

Happy 4th!!! Right now I have 3 snakes living in cages here, the viper, another cat-eye, and the title snake, a redbelly littersnake. Yesterday I found and killed a botfly larva on my stomach. Little bastard thought he could use me as a host. I showed him! My parents still freaked though, I guess they don't think I have common sense or can take care of myself. Well I do. I knew what I had to do with that and I know how to handle the viper (really, I am careful). It's great when I get new snakes, I am almost the center of attention for once. Even D appears to be like my Herpetologist protege (which is cool since I'm actually just learning now too, just a few steps ahead of him in knowing ... read more

This weekend I headed out to explore Rincon de la Vieja, a national park northeast of Liberia. The school arranged the trip for me and I found myself companioned with Bonnie and Marty, an older couple from Buffalo, NY. Bonnie had just completed Spanish 1, Marty Spanish 2. I, being the ever-so-fluent graduate of Spanish 4 would be the designated dialoguer. Off we went on Friday afternoon in a taxi the size of a go-cart. When Marty reached to adjust the AC (we are near the equator!), the driver, knowing no English, simply laughed at him. Our 2-hour treck to Liberia would be a sweltering one! We were delivered to a snazzy Burger King in Liberia (even by US standards!) where a driver from the lodge picked us up. It would be another hot drive up ... read more

I´m always so random, so bear with me… My mom here is so cute. She likes bread a lot, so she doesn´t eat the bigger meals with me most of the time. But whenever she makes a comment about something not right, like how she eats too much bread, she says, “Es un problema, Yaneec.” “It´s a problem, Janice,” with a seriousness reflecting from her wide-set eyes. She also said she doesn´t eat the food with me because she gets tired of it. I can imagine. She cooks three meals a day! I would get tired. It is interesting to me how in the U.S., there´s only one type of “white.” Here in Costa Rica, there´s such a thing as “not quite a white.” My Tica mom was commenting how my friend Crystal is not quite ... read more

Well the folks at Intercultura Language School could NEVER give me an exam that equaled to the true test I had this week in Samara. For those of you wondering why I haven't blogged or emailed much in over a week. . .here's my story: Last Saturday night I began to feel a sore throat that I knew was a tell-tale sign of worse things to come. I had prepared myself well for all kinds of intestinal issues that I'd heard were so common in Latin America. Of course no where in my ziplock of medicines could I find anything for any ailments snot-related. I decided it best that I befriend the little man at the farmacia. Boy was that an experience! Now I can proudly say I'm coming along quite nicely with the language acquisition ... read more
