Well, after an epic journey on a budget bus that got stuck at the border because the officials had knocked off for the day and didnt feel like chekcing our luggage, we are now located in central San Jose, staying in a rundown shack of a hotel for about 7 dollars a night. The room looks like a cardboard box and the walls dont go all the way up to the ceiling, but it has a bed, and after a night spent wrestling with armrests and velcro curtains sleeping on the bus, anything is good! We got done for 20 dollars at the border, as apparently we had been irresponsible and not gotten ourselves a tourist card on arrival at the airport (I tried to persuade the customs officer that that is his colleagues job to ... read more

My shorts are musty from not wearing them at all and I had to spray AXE on them to cure it but I fear that was to no avail. I got 2 more iguanas last night, and tomorrow I will release and observe them. It's a good system, kinda forced but really all I can do in such short notice (I stop on the 17th after all). Tonight is picture night; Dave and I are going to show off our best shots from the summer to a small class that arrived recently. Now, for a treat (or suffering) I am going to try to write in Spanish for the rest of this entry: Continuaremos? Si. Seguo mi estudies y voy en bosque lluvia. Vivo por ayes y manana, por hoy esta nunca bueno. Es el perro ... read more

Bueno Dias compardres. Yesterday I had orientation, no classes. I met all the other students that are going to be here for the 6 weeks, there are 10 of us. 6 of them are from geneseo, all my age, there is one old lady from las vegas, and another middle aged woman from columbus ohio and a girl from SUNY new paltz. So far the showers i´ve taken every morning have been extremely cold. Lets just say that afterwards I did not have cajones grandes. There´s only a minimum amount of water here in san Jose, so the cold water was an excellent incentive to shower quickly and conserve water. Also, my bedroom seems to have a permenant smell of 409 and bleach but i´m warming up to it. I took a picture of my bed ... read more

entonces.... Let me describe my town of Quepos, Costa Rica. In one word.... drum roll... Can you say Tijuana???????? Mira, I wasn´t really prepared for my trip mentally because I had been staying in decent places since I arrived here in Costa Rica, but when my house sister picked me up and we drove into town with a taxi, I felt like I was a deer in headlights. Acutally, I live on a nice street or shall I say my house is off a paved street (nice). I finally arrived with my sister, Kiara (15yo) to a very clean and tidy house. I met my house mother, Tere, and she was instantly warm. I shared the house with her husband and daughter, grandson, and 2 other students. There is no air conditioning and only cold showers!!!!! ... read more

Church was interesting. It´s beautiful inside, with chandeliers and frescoes on the wall. It is not like the traditional Catholic environment. A random street dog ran back and forth through the church a couple of times…only in Costa Rica. Yes, they took the sacrament and the priest gave the homily. We even knelt to pray. But it was also mixed with a more laid-back contemporary feel. The music was amazing. They played classical and acoustic guitars. I loved listening to their songs, because it was bright and uplifting. It mad me smile. Sadly, the only part I could join in was the “Alleluias.” I felt like Mr. Bean. Jaja, not really. It was almost comical, when the family squeezed into the row. It was the dad, the mom, me, Mati, and Jorge (su novio). In a ... read more

I hope I can come back here next year, as a Teaching Assistant for my advisor's class. If I can, then I travel for free. And I would only be staying a month or so so it's not as long-term a stay. Maybe I could even get a research assistant (friend basically) to come down and help me out. But what to study? So far in July the downtime has been reading and chatting, and laughing at the toy dogs running around humping and barking at each other. Wasps abound too. I like the idea of doing research for a living. I can plan where I want to go and when I want to go there. It would be great. And I could teach on the side, earn a steady paycheck and such. And see ... read more

Buenos Dias! Commence Laczak´s whirlwind trip in Costa Rica. I´m here at school before classes begin at 2... It´s 1 now, but 3 o´clock in the USA. The first weekend has already come and gone. I´m going to start this first entry off with a bang. This goes out to Luke Barklow because I know he´ll take great pleasure in this only because it was a key ingredient to ¨the weather machine.¨I drank milk straight from a cows udder! Yup. Thats right. Around 5 am on Sunday morning, me, oscar (the host father), Kattia (the host mother), Juan Pablo (their son), Andres and Juan Carlos (Kattia´s other 2 sons) and a bunch more of their relatives that I can´t remember went to this... I´m not even sure what you´d call it, but lets just say a ... read more

Two iguanas. That's it so far, I hope to find more though. I started observations on those two. Basically, when a field area came up on my weekly schedule, I took them out and let them go one by one and observed them as the went. One did nothing and sat frozen for the duration. The other was completely nuts. I've never seen so many tongue flicks and feeding attempts. It seems these guys just move through a habitat testing everything green or fruit-like they can find to see if it is palatable. I don't know though how I will go about figuring out what it is that they are eating (lack of botanical knowledge is what you can chalk that one up to). I wish I knew more Spanish. I really have been putting off ... read more
