Päiväretkelle sortsit ja t-paita. Kävin ensin bussilla kaupungin suurimmassa puistossa jonka nimi on Sabana. Sitten menin kansallismuseoon. Siellä oli aluksi iso tila, jossa lenteli perhosia. Muuten museo käsitteli historiaa. Ajanjakso 1500-1850 oli remontissa. Mutta nähtävää riitti siitä huolimatta. Paluumatkalla hotelliin löytyi huokea lounaspaikka, jonka julkaisin myös Facebookissa. Illaksi farkut ja pitkä kauluspaita. Olutta parissa baarissa. Taksilla takaisin.... read more

Bussi lähti Granadasta klo 7 ja saapui San Joséhen klo 17. Herätys klo 5. Omatoimisesti aamupala. Taksilla Ticabussin pysähdyspaikalle. Ernarosa matkusti samalla bussilla Liberiaan asti. Klo 21 tulpat korviin ja nukkumaan.... read more

Kävin aamulla kävelyllä sielläpäin jossa olimme hostellissa 1988. Ehkä löysin oikean rakennuksen. Käyttötarkoitus oli vain muuttunut. Aamupalan jälkeen kävin ostamassa huomiseksi matkalipun Liberiaan. Mennessä kävin katsomassa yhtä mahdollista hotellia loppumatkaksi. Menin kävellen ja palasin taksilla. Tapasin vielä illalla pari kaveria. Koska wifi toimi surkeasti huoneessa, istuin hotellin sisäpihalla tabletin kanssa ja join olutta.... read more

Nukuin taas huonosti. Bussi pääkaupunkiin lähti ihan hotellin läheltä. Siinä meni yli tunti tietöiden takia. Taksilla hotelliin, Santo Tomas. Viehättävä paikka. Uima-allas jää vain väliin sormien naarmujen takia. Tapasin Joelin klo 15. Viimeksi nähtiin Porissa. Lounas kauppahallissa.

THE OLD AND THE NEW After a day of rest, recuperating from two days of touring Costa Rica, I felt revived and ready to do a little sightseeing. I had the hotel’s excellent continental breakfast and then sat by the pool for a while just enjoying some down time. Then I grabbed my camera and left the hotel to see what I could see on this, my last full day in San Jose. First stop was the dentist office just up the street. The receptionist unlocked the door. All the businesses on the streets in Costa Rica seem to lock the front door. There was a lovely lady sitting on one of the waiting room chairs checking her phone. I told the receptionist I was interesting in having my teeth cleaned. The lady behind me said, ... read more

Geo: 9.93333, -84.0833Time Check: 0735 Costa Rica Time: GMT - 6Sitting on our Teak Balcony in Room 8 of The Van Trapp Motel overlooking verdant vegetation and Pool. A "little man" is sweeping up mango tree leaves whilst various "parrot like" chirps and whoops can be heard in the branches towering above. We are literally 1/4km from the Airport and it was only a short hop from there last night. Various aircraft engine noise break the 'JUNGLY" cacophony every few minutes. We we were up and poking about at 0500hrs looking forward to home ground coffee put together in our little plunger device (which got pulled apart at JFK as it had a couple of AAA Batteries conveniently stowed inside it)........tick...tick....DISASTER!!!.....total plug failure......I had stupidly packed three EEC plugs instead of US ones.........NO KETTLE!.......NO CHARGING!........pote... read more

ON MY OWN IN SAN JOSE I had a reservation at KC Hotel in San Jose. The name turned out to be problematic. The driver had never heard of it. It was dark. I was tired. He drove around in circles. Finally he stopped and asked a friend, and when we got to the hotel he charged me double because he had a hard time finding it. Still, I was so happy with the hotel. It was clean. The beds were comfortable. And I could finally stretch out and rest. The room was big and I did not have to worry about getting in someone else’s way. I went down to the restaurant, which is in the bar, and I ordered dinner. I wasn’t expecting much. After all, it was late, and it was a bar. ... read more

Our excruciating early start was 6:00 a.m. to drive to San José, because none of us cared to fly. This gave us an extra hour to sleep and lots of snacks in the vehicle. Several times all day we had to assure Ollie that a four-hour car journey was not onerous for Canadians; he and Estaban considered it a major undertaking. I liked driving through the countryside because I got a better understanding of daily life. At first we retraced our route past the airport and the roadworks; Estaban fairly soon turned onto a new multilane highway, part of the Pan American Highway. I wasn’t dismayed by the highway route, because the views were good – lushly green, of course. In time the new road linked to the old highway - two lanes and lined with ... read more

Hey there. It’s been a while since the last time your heard from me, but honestly, not much happened in the last weeks. I spent so much time at my computer that I tried to get off every minute I could (still writing the thesis). I made the best out of the situation and still had a good time. End of September I went to Paso Canoas, visiting Panama for 5 min to get a new visa and then went to the beach in Pavones. There was a big swell coming in and with lots of good surfers as it is a perfect left hand break. I’m still not surfing, especially not at this level, but it was amazing to watch. I tried to do some stuff for the thesis at the beach and got distracted ... read more

After immigration and customs, our guide, Ollie, found me from amongst the crowd of greeters with signs. He introduced me to Lise and Giselle, from Sudbury, who had spent their extra night in a different Houston Hotel. With only four travellers, we will be riding in a comfortable van that can easily carry our luggage. During the drive into town, Ollie startled us with the information that San Jose has 2 million people, a third of the country’s population! The city is spread over 72 kilometres in the Central Valley, which is actually a tectonic depression caused by sequences of earthquakes. Most buildings are one or two storeys because of earthquake risks. Small businesses and shops are neighbours with medium industrial compounds. The economy’s agricultural base is gradually changing to services, particul... read more
