Hola Everyone! Hope everyone has had a good couple of days post holidays. Of course we have been having more fun. On Saturday, we went to Ecocentro Danaus. It’s a small wildlife center with a hiking trail. It was not far from town - only 3km so we decided to walk there. The walk wasn´t long, but it was alongside a busy road, so unfortunately it wasn´t super pleasant - but we made the most of it. It was good to be out moving about in the nice warm sun. We got a map, and volunteer from the center explained what we might see, and started the walk with us. We were very fortunate, as there was a baby sloth there-and it was the one day a week the sloth comes down from the tree, to ... read more

This morning's trip to the waterfall was awesome. After Walt and I shared an omlette for breakfast, we caught a taxi to the entrance of the park where the waterfall is. Admission had gone up from what my book said. It was $10 pp to enter but worth it. The falls were BEAUTIFUL! It was about a 10-15 minute walk down to the base of the waterfall. Once you got there, you were amazed and the grandness of this waterfall. It is HUGE. We posed for a few pictures, then were daring enough to enter the water. We didn't swim in the actual section where the waterfall was (as the water is too strong there) but we swam further down stream where others were swimming. The water was SUPER cold and it was a cloudy, drizzling ... read more

Hiking to the Waterfall

Last night was nice. Walt and I walked to find a bank machine, got money, then found a nice little Chinese restaurant for dinner. We were a 5 minute walk from downtown. Good location. Afterwards, we sat for a bit in Parque Morazan - a nice little park close to our hostel. We then went back to the hostel where we enjoyed a beer and I played one of the guitars they have there for guests to borrow. We then checked our e-mails and were in bed by midnight. Traveling takes a lot out of you I guess. This morning we woke up and after enjoying a free pancake breakfast at Tranquilo Backpackers, we were off in a taxi to catch a bus to La Fortuna. The taxi driver took us to a different station than ... read more

After 3 days in the city learning the ropes, we went off on our own with our GPS- we call her GyPSy. The route to Arenal was amazing, scary and beautiful all at the same time. The tiny road took us through villages and over mountain ridges, all the while dodging pot holes and negotiating curves. We found a 'typical soda' to eat at - it's our goal to eat the local food - instead of at tourist restaurants, and it was really good. Even the kids loved the arroz con pollo piled high and shaped like a volcano! We had casados - means marriage - a mix of beans, rice, plantain, chicken, and this one included a beet & potato salad. Our hotel was spread out over a huge property on the slope of the ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Alajuela » La Fortuna September 30th 2009

We headed to this city, known for its active volcano straight away. When we arrived we became friends another couple staying at our hostel from Germany. Everything in this town requires the purchase of a way-over priced tour, but they knew of a secret spot where there is a hot springs river and knew a guy who would take us there. It was an incredible night. At sunset we drove out to the river where we relaxed in the hot water after dark and drank rum with our new friends. Just us and the fireflies. Afterwards we drove around the volcano to the active side and were witness to the hot red lava streaming down the side of the Volcano. It was a bit scary as it came down soo fast, but we were on the ... read more

Volcano Trail Day 15: La Fortuna, Costa Rica We left Monteverde for La Fortuna. After an hour of driving we arrived at Arenal Lake. This is a man-made lake formed by a hydro-electric dam/plant. It was a quick 20 min boat ride across to the other side and the town of La Fortuna. La Fortuna is at the base of the very active Arenal Volcano. It is also a huge tourist town. Gringos are everywhere. Many foreigners own homes in the area and prices are very high for everything. On the first day I chilled out, read the newspaper in Spanish, and walked around the town... very little charm to this town. Enjoyed an expensive dinner and drinks before calling it a night. Day 16: La Fortuna, Costa Rica After sleeping in, it was off to ... read more

This is Kate. I put pictures up on the first entry about Carolyn's visit, so you should check them out! So... traveling to La Fortuna was very scenic. There were dramatic valley views as we climbed the hills. Once we were near, there was a mist around us. It felt like we were heading into the clouds! We arrived in the afternoon and it was a misty day indeed. We didn't have anywhere to stay, so we walked around a bit and eventually came to Gringo Pete's, a cheap youth hostel that looked fun. It was purple! Also, only $6 per night and we had a private room with a bathroom! Sweet! After settling in, we were thinking of what to do. The day wasn't so good for walking around, so we decided to plan what ... read more

We have been in Costa Rica for 13 days now and each day brings new reasons to be amazed by this country. The climate, for one, is excellent. We have found that going to bed early and waking up early is the best way to make the most of our days here as the sun rises at around 5am and sets at around 6pm. The sunsets here have been another reason to be amazed by the country as watching it set whilst sitting on the warm beaches of Manuel Antonio you can clearly see as it sinks into the sea. It seemed to take about 3 minutes before the sun was completely gone, leaving the sky red at the horizon. The people here are also wonderful, although the occasional sponger does leave a sour reminder that ... read more
