So, it's been a while and I'm working hard to catch up on writing about all of my exploits. School got quite busy there for a second with a 3 week, 3 credit course that met everyday with Meg, who had a hand in developing this entire program. Probably one of the more valuable course I taken at UVM however, in terms of skills that will come in handy whenever I make it to the "real-world." Such a relief to have it finished though, and more time to focus on our development projects we are working on in a service-learning course. My group has dreamed up a project working with HIV/AIDS and the media in Belize. The idea is to come up with a survey to distribute, to find out about where people are getting their ... read more

I throw around the word incredible so often in my blog. But I mean it every time. And I especially mean it when I say today was incredible. A note about work: I have a really low percentage of teens turning out to the club this week. But those who are coming regularly are so wonderful. We only do some of my formal activities, but we’re always hanging out and chatting and laughing and playing various games. A couple nights ago we went to see the theatre show together: Singing With The Big Band, a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. It’s my favourite show - great music, fantastic swing dances and the feature singer, Christopher Allan Graves, has a phenomenal voice. We sat right front and centre and Christopher noticed them all and ... read more

Tucked away between Mexico and Guatemala in Central America is Belize; although only 8,866 square miles this little jewel has a lot to offer. The following are five of the many magnificent places you can visit on a Belize Vacation. Each destination is easily accessible and is in close range of several Belize Hotels and Belize Resorts ran by friendly locals. San Pedro Town San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, also known as "La Isla Bonita" is the largest and most visited island in Belize. Located 36 miles northeast of Belize City, the island is easily accessible by either water taxi or airplane. This sandy and picturesque island has a population of approximately 8,000 people. to steal another line from aaron "you better belize it!" we're in caye caulker in belize right now which is a welcome and relaxing change. not that costal mexico was in any way hectic, but i like it here. last i wrote, i think i was in playa del carmen maybe? i dunno. maybe isla muejres. in any case, we went to playa del carmen and it was gross. the beach was nice, but the hostel was kinda crap and the main drag is almost worse tourist wise than cancun. the next day we headed to tullum with our full car. brendan and i, also maarten and rene from hollan and belkis from venezuela. we spent 3 nights in cabans on the beach. it was a lovely time, though i managed to get pretty badly sunburnt. ... read more

Belize...home...so familiar...so welcoming...I can't tell you how happy I was when my feet stepped on to Belizean soil. Not that I didn't like Honduras, because I truly did. I was just ready for friends, fellowship, English! So I had a couple of days to relax and do a little trip set up before Jennie and Jason (my co-workers) arrived. The village we were ministering in was Dangriga. A quite, calm village right on the coast. It's about a 2.5 hour drive south of Belize City. And that drive is absolutely gorgeous, driving through mountains passing villages. I was super excited to see Jennie and Jason! I had spent too much alone time in Honduras. Even though I enjoy and need alone time, I had had enough, and that says a lot coming from me. I ... read more

South Water Caye is part of the South Water Caye Marine reserve. It's home to a huge collection of coral reefs just a half hour boat ride from Dangriga. Our group stayed at the International Zoological Expeditions lodge (IZE) and got classroom instructions on how to identify and evaluate coral health. The beach on the south side of the island was incredible. It had a breath-taking view of Victoria Peak, and the reef could be accessed right from the beach. Other than that, it was a pretty sleepy little island and what time we didn't spend on the beach was out on the reefs. This place was amazing.... read more

I picked up this book called “The Historian” by Elizabeth Kostova in the Cancun airport without knowing what it was about. It ended up being this amazing book (so far) that is along the lines of “Da Vinci Code”. Instead of following the bloodline of Jesus through Western Europe, this book follows the history of Vlad the Impaler (the real-life Count that was the basis of Bram Stoker’s Dracula character) through Eastern Europe. About 100 pages into the book I came across this quote that pretty much sums up why I always have to go somewhere new every time I travel. “…I have often known that peculiar legacy time brings to a traveler: the longing to seek out a place for a second time, to find deliberately what we stumbled on once before, to recapture the ... read more

Blogger Bec Well here we are in the wonderful Caye Caulker, an island off Belize (Check out our map if you don't know where we are!!). We are now travelling with our tour group, having come from Cancun in Mexico down into Belize. We caught the sea taxi out to Caye Caulker yesterday afternoon and have spent today snorkelling in the reef about ten minutes boat ride out from our hotel on the beach. First stop was Ray Alley where up to 15 sting rays were swimming around us in maybe 6 feet of water. The colour was immaculate. The guide was great but I wasn't too keen on how they feed the rays in order for them to stay around. He was also touching them and I just find that contradictorary to the whole ... read more

I'm finally getting to a point in school, where it's so busy I'm overwhelmed. What happened to that vacation I was enjoying!? I will never figure out why professors seem to coincide their most demanding work to be due on the same day/week. By these standards I must procrastinate and update my blog. In other sad news, there will also be no pictures for a while, until I replace my flash drive. Ahhh, technology. Anywho, we are returning from a lovely weekend in Placencia, on the Southern(ish) coast, and the only nice beach on the mainland, so I'm told. All of us had unfathomable amounts of work to do, but put if off to attend an arts festival. "Festival," was used in the broadest sense of the word. To be fair, artistic ventures aren't popular in ... read more

I am falling in love with the country of Belize. It is so beautiful and there is so much to see and do there. It’s the port I’ll see the most frequently over the course of my contract and I’m delighted. Bright and early (7:30am, after a long night out at the guest disco the night before), I left for a shore excursion. Ricky, one of the production dancers, went with me. The tour was phenomenal. We went in a motor boat and cruised along the coast line, then for 24 km down the Rio (River) Wallace. The scenery was stunning. Lush tropical trees, plants and palms lined the river. The water was so still it looked like a long sheet of glass cutting through the land. The scenery reflected perfectly on the water. The clouds ... read more
