The Rainforest River
The area we tubed along was just before here. This area was behind the area where we sat for lunch. I throw around the word incredible so often in my blog. But I mean it every time. And I especially mean it when I say today was incredible.
A note about work: I have a really low percentage of teens turning out to the club this week. But those who are coming regularly are so wonderful. We only do some of my formal activities, but we’re always hanging out and chatting and laughing and playing various games. A couple nights ago we went to see the theatre show together: Singing With The Big Band, a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. It’s my favourite show - great music, fantastic swing dances and the feature singer, Christopher Allan Graves, has a phenomenal voice. We sat right front and centre and Christopher noticed them all and talked about them and how great it was to see young people coming to listen to classic songs. The teens really enjoyed the show and we had so much fun seeing it together. So work is a real treat this week.
Today I went on a tour with Chanelle, one of my teens. We went cave tubing! One of out guides, Jake, is
the same one who took Ricky & I to Altun Ha. So again, the bus tour was great and informative.
When we got to the river, we first walked for about 30 minutes - all through the rainforest. It was stunning. I love the way bits of sunlight would find it’s way to thine through breaks in the trees. The colours of the jungle are indescribably vivid and bold. There are so many sounds in the forest - animals and insects - yet it’s calm and peaceful.
As we walked along the path winding through the forest, I thought about my interview for this job. When Zack (my supervisor) went over the different things I had to do and he mentioned teen tours, the example given was cave tubing in Belize. I felt in awe and in complete disbelief that that could possibly be part of a job. It seemed too good to be true. I remember sitting in Trisha’s kitchen at YLCC, on the phone with Zack, thinking this and being overwhelmed by how desperately I wanted the job. And I have it. I’m here. As we walked through the rainforest, I couldn’t quite believe it, that
The Morning Sky Over Belize
This was what the sky looked like as we took our tender boat from the ship to the terminal this morning. somehow I am lucky enough to be experiencing exactly what I wanted. We really do have the power to make our dreams our reality.
At the end of our walk, we got into our tubes in the river and off we went. We drifted through the cave for about ½ an hour. Chanelle and I felt like we were on a grand adventure. It was so amazing, we couldn’t believe it was real and not just a man-made theme park creation. We just laid back in the our tubes and let the water carry us along as we admired the magnificent rocks and cave formations. A couple times we passed large openings in the caves where the rocks would frame views of the green jungle outside. I was either dumbstruck or could not stop exclaiming about how amazing it was.
At the end of the cave, we continued travelling along the water for another half hour, but now out in the sunshine with the rainforest lining the river bank. Such a phenomenal way to experience the rainforest! I loved just lying back, closing my eyes and feeling the sun shine on my face. Then I’d open my eyes
The Caribbean Sea
Look at the colour! How incredible is this?!? Taken over the side of our tender boat. to watch the different trees, plants and vines as I passed beneath them.
Apologies for the lack of photos to go along with my entry. Because we were in the water the whole time, I only had a water camera which takes with film. So you'll have to wait for the scrapbook to see the caves.
This cave tubing excursion was one of the most amazing things I’ve done since I joined the ship and I’d be thrilled to do it again. In fact, today falls into the same category of astounding experiences as the safari and white water rafting in Uganda - so astounding I can’t believe it’s real.
Our planet is beyond any adjectives incredible. I can’t imagine not taking the opportunity to travel, see and experience the world. I can’t imagine not making the opportunity. I have time and again. And I won’t stop. There are so many astounding experiences just waiting. It may be selfish to want them all, but I believe I’m better for it.
