Central America Caribbean » Barbados » Holetown February 14th 2015

Saturday February 14th, 2015. Bridgetown, Barbados. Bridgetown is the capital and largest city in the nation of Barbados. Formerl the town of St Michael, the Greater Bridgetown area is located within the parish of St Michael. Bridgetown is sometimes locally referred to as "The City" but the most common reference is simply "Town". The port, which is located along the Carlisle Bay is on the south western coast of the island. This is quite a walk away from the centre of town. We met Roy and Pati and John and Mary at 9.00 am in the reception area of the ship. We had arranged this last night as John had indicated that he would like to swim in the Caribbean sea at least once on this trip. As a result the 4 of us had said ... read more

Friday 26th December, 2014. Barbados, West Indies Barbados is the most easterly island in the West Indies out of the chain of Leeward and Windward Islands. It stands in splendid isolation with the powerful Atlantic Ocean on its east coast and the clear, calm waters of the Caribbean Sea on the south and west coasts. Measuring 21 miles long and 14 miles wide at its widest point (and with an overall area of only 166 square miles), the island is only just larger than the Isle of Wight. From its founding in 1627 to its independence in 1966, the island was a British colony, and unlike the rest of its Caribbean neighbours, was never taken by force. It has and endearing blend of British and West Indian cultures, which allied to the Bajan's reputation as the ... read more

Our final port of call and as there seemed to be quite a lot on the island we decided to rent a car for the day and share with another couple, Matt and Sheila from the ship. It cost US$ 125 including the petrol, insurance and licence so was a relatively cheap way of seeing the island. Eventually managed to find our way out of Bridgetown (Matt turned out to be an excellent map reader!!) and headed past St Ann’s Fort to Oistins, where we had a stop and a wander around the fish market watching the ladies prepare the flying fish for Friday nights fry up! Our next stop was Crane Beach for a photo stop of the two coves and cliffs. On to East Point Lighthouse that turned out to be a rusty old ... read more

Saturday 13th December, 2014 - Barbados, West Indies On the Friday night we made our way to some friends who live in Epsom who had kindy offered to put us up for the night, store our car and act as taxi service the next morning. Thanks Rosemarie and Philip. The flight left without a hitch, the airport having caught up with the flight delays from the evening before (when a computer failure had caused all of London's airspace to be shut down)! We travelled on a Boeing Dreamliner which was a first for us. It was quite nice with plenty of leg-room and daylight. We landed after 8 and a half hours and disembarked straight onto a coach which took us to the ship which took about 40 minutes. We had time to go in to ... read more

After leaving Santa Cruz our last stop was in Las Palmas, where I spent the day looking at a flea market, the town and then to the world heritage old town on top of the mountain which was reached by a light rail tramway. Lots of lovely gardens, houses and little cafes. If I could have packed another suitcase with lots of goodies from the flea market which had everything possible to be sold. Then the long sea days began, and so did my workload. I ended up having two classes a day, knitting and Psychology lectures, and knitting and teaching conversational english to the German passengers. It was amazing that there were two couples onboard that I had known from previous cruises. One couple Heidi and Dieter from Germany were on the 2004 crossing from ... read more

The people of the West Indies seem endlessly intrigued by my wilder tendencies, which tend to surface every time I visit the Caribbean. "You're sporting bare feet man!" a woman in Barbados exclaimed in amazement the other day. The locals will stare at my feet likes it's an amazing sight to behold, but ever since I was a kid I've always loved to get around sans footwear. Sandals and other footwear can pinch and grate after a while, so it's great to feel wild and free here in the sun, that is between swims in the glorious blue waters of the Caribbean! So here I am in Barbados, a legendary resort island on the Caribbean circuit, and the island considered the most British in the region. The ties between the locals and the British are strong ... read more

Geo: 13.11, -59.61Friday, March 14, 2014BarbadosAfter our ship left St. Lucia yesterday, we sailed south between St. Lucia and St. Vincent, south of Cape Moule a Chique. We went southeast across the Tobago Basin to Barbados.Though we've never been to Barbados, and not knowing anything at all about it (I've always thought of it as kind of scary) we decide to do our own thing. We even have a plan. Yes, we are slow learners. Hahaha! After a quick breakfast of bagels and peanut butter and plain yogurt and some fruit, we walked off the ship around 9am. It was only a 10 minute walk to the bus depot. After a short wait, we hopped a bus to Holetown - bus fare $1 US each. (This bus also goes to "Pie Town" and that sounded very tempting!) ... read more

Barbados in February. Sunshine and warm winds - its about 28C. Occasional showers of light, warm, rain. Hummingbirds visiting the tropical flowers in the garden while we breakfast on our verandah. At only 21 miles by 14, Barbados is just a big coral island, unusual in the Caribbean where most islands are volcanic. So no mountains, just a hilly ridge. The island's coast is a succession of sandy beaches. Some long; some in little bays. Some with posh hotels or villas at the back; many with just palm trees. Some with sunbeds, a bar and water sports; others with a man selling refreshing coconuts; some with just us and the ocean. The ocean on the two sides of the island is markedly different. On the Western side, warm waters lap the beaches. On the Eastern coast, ... read more

In a few days we will be starting our journey around seven of the Windward Islands in the southern Caribbean Sea. Our first stop is Barbados, where the current temperature is 26C. We plan to use small planes and ferries to get between the islands. Our first hop will get us to St Vincent and then we'll head south down the Grenadines - Bequia, Union, Carriacou and Grenada. Then a final hop will take us to Tobago. There is a map of our planned route below. More once we are on our way.... read more

No i miał być też farmers' market z warzywami, ale okazało ... read more
