Mishay's Reflections: What an awesome opportunity!! I have enjoyed fellowship with Rotarians in Cayman Islands, New Providence, and now Abaco. Our hosts have afforded me the opportunity to experience their fabulous cuisine, rich culture, religious worship, and schools in the Islands. I promise you, the sights that tourists access do not begin to compare to being immersed in the culture and experiencing the day-to-day life. I have enjoyed dining on island cuisine ranging from Turtle with Pigeon Peas & Rice with Carl and Hazel to Conch and fish prepared in native dishes with our hosts in Nassau and Abaco. I will miss this cuisine when I return home!!! My experience was enhanced tremendously after touring Pedro St. James in Cayman, experiencing a glimpse of the social issues at the Dundas Theatre performance with the Rotarians of ... read more

Cynthia's Comments: We are halfway through this awesome adventure and have met some wonderful people along the way. Attached to this blog are some photos of our new friends that have helped to make this experience extra special for our team. Thus far, we've been to the Cayman Islands and Nassau, Bahamas and are now experiencing life in Marsh Harbour on the island of Abaco in the Bahamas. Each location has its own unique charm yet they all have two things in common -- friendly people and delicious food! In Nassau, we attended cultural events in addition to participating in vocational experiences. I met with media representatives at the two major Nassau newspapers, visited each of their radio stations and participated in a live radio interview about the Group Study Exchange experience. We also attended a ... read more

Hello All! We have arrived in the beautiful island of Abaco. We had an early morning (met at the airport at 5am) still dark and i am sure our hosts were happy to go home and back to bed. Sad to say goodbye to Nassau and our host families, but excited for our next destination. Yesterday, we ended our stay at Nassau at the Straw Market on Bay street, was fun shopping! I think we have gained 40lbs since being here (i mean our luggage has gained weight.......). We took a short flight and were met by our hosts in Marsh Harbor, Abaco. We had breakfast and then we all went our seperate ways to get settled in at our host families. We will have our Rotaary meeting tonight and then vocational day tomorrow. Hard to ... read more

Today was so much fun. All of us went to Winding Harbor, and enjoyed ourselves with the blue floaties, played beach tennis, and Susie, Cheston and I all tried out paddle boarding. Pictures to illustrate.... read more

No, seriously, these are real life pictures. I thought I was looking at a Corona commercial, with the deserted white sand beach, the soft lulling song of the waves strumming against the shore, and the cool breeze hitting my skin. But alas, I was reminded that I was in real life when I dipped my feet in the water. Chilly, but delightful. Spent the day enjoying the company of Susie, George and my dear husband. Got to lay in a hammock for part of the afternoon, drifting in and out of sleep. Lots of travel stories to tell about the trip and arrival here, but will save it for the next blog. Cheers, Kat and Chet... read more

Recap on our trip out here: Was supposed to leave LA at 11 pm, but because of 11 drunken men on the plane, and a crowd of security, a yelling stewardess and pulling the airplane all the way back to the gate from the runway, we ended up leaving more near midnight. It was definitely the most excitement I have seen on a plane. Got to Miami, and slept on the chairs waiting during our 5 hour layover. Let me let Chet describe the airport in Abaco here: The runway was a little wider than our driveway and all the signs were hand painted...at least there were no typos. As we waited in line for customs the lady had to tell us to "compact the line" so we would not be "standing on the runway." They ... read more

“The Trip Home” After completing repairs to our starboard saildrive, we decided to revisit some of our favorite Abaco Islands. We had several reasons for this. Some of our friends from George Town were now arriving in the Abacos on their way north, we needed to make sure the saildrive repairs were really done correct and we liked cruising these islands. We joined our friends on “Nauti-Nauti” and “Star” in Hope Town for a few days and then went on to Great Guana Cay to meet up with Truit & Val on ”Margaret”. Finally on April 12th, we had a favorable weather window and the time had come to head Double-Wide west toward the US. Our first challenge was to sail around “The Whale”. This is a relatively short ocean passage out around Whale Cay but ... read more

“Adventures at the Top of the Bahamas” The Abacos are the northern most group of islands in the Bahamas. The central anchorage is Marsh Harbor, which is a big city by out island standards. For example, it has a traffic light. Only one, but it is the first one we have seen since Nassau back in December. Circling Marsh Harbor are several other smaller towns on other cays. They also have a small bakery that specializes in homemade bread and pastries. We had hot-cross buns for Easter and have really enjoyed their coconut bread. Nancy’s sister Gayle decided to fly down to Marsh Harbor over her spring break and spend 8 days with us. She arrived just after we had resupplied and visited the big Laundromat to wash all of the dirty clothes we accumulated on ... read more
