When the cold front finally lifted we finally threw the lines and headed out of Marsh Harbor and headed for Elbow Cay. Elbow Cay is home to Hope Town and Tahiti beach where we have been before and my family and I have spent vacation. Matt and I tied up at Seaspray Marina and rented a golf cart and headed for town. It takes a few close calls before you get comfortable driving on the wrong side of the road. We made it safely to Hope Town and parked in the local parking lot by the public dock and walked through town. As we were walking by the baseball/soccer fields we ran into an old buddy, David Campbell. I knew David when he was in middle school and now he has grown up and is trying ... read more

The adventures finally begin when the weather cleared and we motored over to Sea Spray Marina in Elbow Cay, south of Hope Town. Golf carts, rocky roads, perfect weather and plenty of terrain combined with a little Kalik (Bahamian Beer) and two 7 year old minds, created plenty of mischief. We explored the island up to Hope Town, where we ate and drank at Harbours Edge and Capt'n Jack's and down to Tahiti Beach for more coconuts, and even ran into someone from Hank's Boy Scouts Troop, David. David and about 8 of his UNC friends showed us to a chill little lunch spot on Little Harbour island, called Pete's Pub. We ate, we drank and we explored ruins and coconut trees on another island near by. The next day, we decided to test our hand ... read more

So after an early (10am) flight out of Wilmington on Tuesday, and some delays in Ft Lauderdale, I made it. Capt'n Hank was waiting with roses (actually a cabbie named Rosie) and we drove back in the rain to get some dinner and a few drinks at Abaco Beach Resort. The weather didn't allow us to cruise about, so we stayed docked up to find activities on the island. We grabbed some breakfast, explored the resort for a bit and then called a cab to run some errands. Loading up on food, liquid beverages, and only the essential supplies we headed back to the boat eat and make an honest effort at whipping ourselves into shape, at the local 'gym' including a stairstepper(TM), a treadmill, and a few dumbbells. Not deterred by Captn's doubtfulness I cracked ... read more

Matt showed up on Tuesday and he brought winter time with him. It is really cold, it is sixty something with the wind blowing up to 30 knots all day and night. You need your sea legs just to stay on the boat at the dock. We have started our winter workout routine at the small resort fitness faclity. By the time we get back we will look like Hans and Frans. I know we are in paradise but we are wearing jeans and sweatshirts and staying and reading. We are starting to get into a rountine, breakfast, reading, workout, lunch/laundry, emails, reading/nap, dinner and sleep at 9:30. Tonight was a bit different. We were invited to the Royal Marsh Harbor Yatch Club Social tonight. We showed up with a six pack of Kalik, local ... read more

We spent the night at Gauna Cay. I walked to Nippers Sunday night and it looked MTV Spring Break, 200 plus people packed in this tiny beach bar over looking the beautiful beach. i didn't get a chance to take pictures because i was so overtaken by the sights. we will return to the sunday pig picking at Nippers and pictures will soon follow. Mike and i spent Sunday night wandering around looking for trouble and wound up at Grabbers. Great Guana is definately a grown up place so when Carr (Mike and Bridgett's son) isn't with us. We packed up Monday lunch time and headed back to Tahiti beach and i snuck off for a snorkel. here are pictures and videos. Matt flies in tomorrow and i think we are going to have to hunker ... read more

We made it back to the Bahamas the day after Christmas. When we left Wilmington it was rainy and about 40 degrees, after an hour and a half flight we were in sunny 78 degree weather. We spent the day packing the boat with all the sluppies we brought and then relaxing at the pool with a swim up bar... i couldn't help but think this is going to be a great winter. We lazily made it to Hope Town late Thursday morning. After a little relaxation we hopped in the dingy and headed to the Lighthouse. On top of the Lighthouse you can see most of the Abacos and all the boats running back and forth from Marsh Harbor. After the Lighthouse we skipped over to the other side of the Harbor and walked around ... read more

I have a new job and it is taking me to the Bahamas for the winter. It is going to be tough running a boat in the bahamas all winter but someone has to do it. The first order of business i getting the boat to the islands. On tuesday we left Carolina Beach before sun up and headed out to sea. We made it to Charleston SC by lunch time, we had alligator tail and cheeseburgers from Salty Mikes. We fueled up and headed out and made it to Hilton Head that evening. We had a great dinner at the Crab Shack and we crashed out before nine! We woke up and got underway before sunrise and made it to St. Agustine for lunch and we fueled up and headed out for Cape Canaveral, Fl. ... read more

Our last stop in the islands while working our way back thru the Bahamas towards the States was Green Turtle Cay. It is positioned in the Northern Abacos and is far enough west that we were able to stage here for crossing back to the USA. But we certainly took advantage of our time here while we waited for the perfect weather window to cross the Banks, the Gulf Stream, and make landfall in America- the 30 hour trip back to Florida. We ended up spending a week in Green Turtle waiting for good weather and had a blast exploring this quaint island for the second time. Green Turtle Cay was the first island we visited in the Bahamas when we started this adventure over 2 years ago (which seems more like a lifetime ago). It ... read more

We returned to the Abacos in May, the northernmost group of islands in the Bahamas, and stayed there for over a month. We had a great time revisiting this area, re-uniting with old friends (and their dogs) while cruising around to our favorite anchorages and beach bars. Of course we took the opportunity to explore some new islands and watering holes as well. We had family fly in and visit us there- which was great to share the cruising life with them. And we filled our days with kayaking, snorkeling, and taking Kona to the beach. All in all our time in the Abacos went by too quickly and before we knew it the cruising season was coming to a close. The days were getting filled with thunderstorms and unpredictable weather, not to mention that hurricane ... read more

After the storms had passed and we got all the work done on the boat in Marsh Harbor we decided to go on down to the Berry Islands. The first leg of the journey is to get to the southern tip of the Abacos, Little Harbor. We anchored there for a few days while waiting for the sea to lay down so that we would have a safe passage between the Abacos and the Berry Islands. We anchored right off the beach and were able to swim ashore from the boat- very cool! And the best part of spending time at Little Harbor was our visit to Pete’s Pub. Now this is an amazing story which has been written and published in the book Artist on his Island: A Study in Self-Reliance. Pete’s father, an artist ... read more
