After my meetup with my TB friend, I finally knew how to find my nearby bus stop that would get me to the Den Bosch Station; where I could do my own travels in town by bus. I rode a bus to the station then a second bus to Sint-Janskathedraal. (It was very handy having the free handout maps of Dutch cities.) This is a nice old historic church, much like other nice old Dutch churches. I loved the high beautiful ceilings and the many fine stained glass windows. They also had a nice old large pipe organ. (To this day I still have never herd a big pipe organ play in person...and that would be a good experience for me.) I made it back to my hotel and spent the rest of my day at ... read more

While planning my full month of may in wonderful Nederland, I had only time to stay in eight small cities in Holland. Since I had a friend from a de-funked social travel site, I decided to make a three day visit to his town of 's-Hertogenbosch. Well, this worked out better then I thought possible. My friend (and free guide) met me in front of my hotel on my second day in Den Bosch. He drove me in his car slowly so I could make field notes with exact directions with the Dutch "straats" so I could find my nearest bus station. Then he drove me to a good parking spot near Den Bosch Station. This started my free walking tour of beautiful 's-Hertogenbosch. In front of the station was a tall statue-monument thing that was ... read more

I just arrived by train in 's-Hertogenbosch and got my free city map. Unfortunately my hotel was off the city map. I took a taxi to my hotel and settled in. With only four days to see Den Bosch I had much to see while in town. The nice young lady working at the hotel knew enough English to perform her hotel duties well; but she could not tell me how to get to the nearest bus stop. I enjoyed sitting on my roof-top benches looking at a nice neighborhood. I did not want to get lost especially while staying off the city map. I got my nerve up and had a nice long walk down Quirijn van Amelsfoortstraat, checking out the nice newer buildings and the nice planted flowers. then I had an easy day ... read more

I was tired but realized that this would be my only chance ever to see Wilhelmina Park. This was a longer walk than other walks I made in Breda, and it was worth the walk. Crossing into the park I liked the view across a very nice canal to some nice buildings. I got to see a nicely landscaped Polish WW2 Memorial. I think this was to honor the Polish troops who fell in battle to liberate the City of Breda in October, 1945. A ways off in Wilhelmina Park was a German Panther tank that was captured by the Polish troops. Walking back to my hotel I made my nice stay for a while at Valkenburg Park. I settled in at my hotel to rest so I would be ready to scoot the next morning ... read more

This was my second and last day in Breda and I had much to see. My hotel was on the Grote Markt (large market) and I could see that the market was open for business. There was a number of vendors selling food or clothes. The food vendors were selling tasty foods at a much reduced price compared to the good restaurant. There was probable things available at the market, but I had to scoot and see other places. I walked by some neat old buildings and some neat gardens. I also walked past Sint Antoniuskerk that was built for a Catholic church in 1837. I walked to Breda's Museum, that was closed then. The structure was impressive and make for an interesting walk around the building complex. This is one of the oldest buildings in ... read more

On my last day in Breda I started out with some good coffee at my hotel restaurant. I walked out into the Breda Grote Markt (large market) and purchased some oranges and bread for later that day. I walked by the multiple story row buildings of the old downtown Breda. I walked by Sint Antoniuskerk Kathedraal Bisdom Breda and it was closed. (Built in 1837 AD) I continued on to the nearby Casteel van Breda (Castle of Breda). There was an old military fort there dating back to 1198 AD. In 1826-1828 the Dutch Royal Military Academy was located there in a real fort. Now the fort is the Koninklijke Militaire Casteel van Breda, that is run by the Dutch army and air force. This is an impressive old structure. I was taking a nice break ... read more

I just love the Dutch many city parks so I spent much time at Valkenberg Park in my short stay in Breda. Valkenberg Park started long ago as "The Garden of the Castle", that was only open to the Castle residents and their guests. Now this wonderful park is open free to the public 24 hours per day. Just outside the park is a large red building complex that caught my eye. Internet sites for Valkenberg Park include photos of this impressive building without naming the structure or its function. Valkenburg Park is a natural wonder, as found in all the Dutch cities that I visited. This is a good place to unwind and enjoy nature including the nice trees and canals. Outside the park is the Spanjaardsgat (Spanish Gate) that was built in 1610 AD. ... read more

Arriving at Breda Centraal I took a taxi to my hotel Shadshotel De Kloc, conveniently located on the downtown Grote Markt. With only two days here in Breda it was time for me to get walking to see this beautiful old city. Right there on the market square was the Grote Kerk or Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady); a good place for me to start my tour of this beautiful city. The inside of this fine old church was beautiful with its stained glass windows and a large pipe organ. (I would love to be inside the church when its pipe organ was playing.) Other attractions include artifacts, high colourful ceilings, smaller chapels, and floor markers (graves) for famous people in history that are interned there. The outside of the church was impressive with ... read more

It was still my last day in The Hague and I had much more to see. Just meters away from the Binnennhof (Inner Court) was Mauritshuis (Maurits House) that was built in the 1600s AD as a private residence for Count Johan Maurits. In 1822 this fine structure was converted to an art museum. I can not remember the entry fee, but it was well worth it. When I entered I was greeted with a statue of Maurits. There was a large selection of fine original Dutch artwork. Then I entered the Royal Picture Gallery that had artwork dealing with the Dutch Royalty. Then I entered the Rembrandt Room with original paintings from this great Dutch artist. Leaving the art museum I wanted to walk by the long scenic Hofvijver (lake), on my nature walk. Not ... read more

This was my last day in the historic city of The Hague, and I had no time to waste. From my hotel everything of my interest was within easy walking. My first stop was the large impressive Binnenhof (Inner Court). This was a large set of centuries old connecting buildings built as a large rectangle with a large open courtyard inside. The Binnenhof was built in 1248 AD as a royal residence. In 1446 AD this became a home to the Dutch Parliament, and served a variety of governmental functions as it does today. The enclosed middle courtyard is open free to the people. There was large sections with fancy gates open for people to explore. The most impressive free standing structure near the center of the Binnenhof courtyard was the Ridderzaal (Knight's Hall) with its ... read more
