Well, I was burning daylight on the Paunsaught Plateau and my next camp will be in Arizona. I drove back to Utah 12 and drove Westbound. It didn't take me long to get to Red Canyon featuring the two arches that Utah 12 passed through. Then I had a short drive to Red Canyon Village where I would go Southbound on US Hwy 89. (Red Canyon Village is not on the Utah State map.) I did purchase some coffee while I was there. In Orderville they had several rock shops for us tourists. I made my stop at the Orderville Rock Shop; the best rock shop in town. Then I passed through some small towns on my way to Kanab, Utah where the only good grocery store was before I reached the back-country of Arizona. I ... read more

About three miles West of Utah 63 (Bryce Canyon NP) on Utah 12; I turned Southbound on FS 087 (the primary road across the Paunsaugunt Plateau) of the Dixie N Forest.I drove to the second crossing of FS 088 to make my camp for the night. I cooked my dinner and watched a nice sunset. Then I watched the moon rise. I got on my bed and had a nice sleep for the night. The next morning I had a nice coffee break. Then it was time to drive across the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Back on FS 087 Southbound I quickly got to the nice Tropic Reservoir. There was time to enjoy the views of the lake and shoot a few pics. On the South side of the reservoir there was the Tropic Spring open free to ... read more

After crossing the Northern section of Bryce Canyon N Park on Utah 12; I turned South on Utah Hwy 63 to the main part of this wonderful park. First I made a stop in Bryce Canyon City for petro and to drop off my postcards in their mail drop. Bryce Canyon is not a true canyon, but is an Amphitheater. This is the Eastern end of the Paunsaugunt Plateau (with all East views) with very nice erosion structures often called "Hoodoos". I had a long day and I passed up on Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, and Bryce Point cuz of the big traffic there with long walks. I started with the very nice Inspiration Point. At Inspiration Point I took my quart of cold water and enjoyed several views of this nice overlook. I was dry ... read more

From Boulder, Utah (on Utah 12) to the West end of Utah 12 (at the tiny town of Red Canyon City) at the US Hwy 89 junction, is considered the Northern limits of the the Grand Staircase of Escalante National Monument (NPS). The Southern limits is the Colorado River System and the Arizona State line. While the Eastern limits of Grand Staircase is the Escalante River, with the Western limits is US Hwy 89. This would include the entire Calf Creek Canyon with the Escalante River SE to the Colorado River system at the center of Lake Powell. Also included is the Straight Cliffs of the "50 Mile Mountain", The Kaiparowits Plateau, Kotochrome Basin, the Paria River, and the Paunsaugunt Plateau that is owned and managed by Bryce Canyon N Park and the Dixie N Forest. ... read more

I finished with the "Devils Backbone" and arrived in the Town of Escalante. Tonights camp would be Westbound from here; but there was something wonderful Eastbound to experience, so I did a backtrack to see the Escalante River canyon and more. First I arrived at the big parking area for the scenic overlook on top of the Escalante River valley. I camped downhill from the scenic overlook several times while it was legal camping. I would drive across the levels of the "slick-rock" areas and camp out of sight from the highway. Now most of that highway has guardrails just to keep people off of our public land. That was all BLM free camping until they made the Escalante National Monument (small NPS) and the camping ended. There are no signs to tell you where the ... read more

Just two miles West of Boulder, Utah, Forest Service road 153 rides around the large Box-Death Hollow. This is where about twenty five square miles of the Plateau has slid downhill long ago exposing up to an 800 foot depression with exposed cliffs, including Devils Backbone in the Northern tip of the slide. I made the circle from the Boulder on the East around Box-Death Hollow and South to Escalante, Utah. The road starts out paved; but after a few miles turns into dirt by the left turn for the Native American restaurant. Then the dirt road goes continually uphill to and past Devils Backbone. The scrub junipers turn into a Ponderosa Pine forest as I gain altitude. In the pine forest Box-Death Hollow is somewhat visible to the left (West); but the best views of ... read more

Torrey is the Eastern start of Utah Scenic Hwy 12, From outside Torrey the access to the Boulder Mts is Utah Hwy 12 of the Dixie National Forest, Southbound to Boulder. At Torrey I drove uphill and quickly got into the Boulder Mts. It was late in the afternoon so I made camp at "Good Pine Camp"; a familiar old camp. This was a lower elevation with Ponderosa Pine dominating the vegetation. I took my camp nearby Utah 12 while a Forest Service road ran Eastbound from the same highway exit. I relaxed with a big rum drink and some trail mix. I lucked out with a very nice sunset by my camp. It was very cool out so I slept well with my nice quilt over me. The next morning I had my coffee and ... read more

I drove the Utah scenic Hwy 24 from Hanksville to Torrey to see the Capitol Reef NPS (National Park Service) and to set me up for my camp in the Boulder Mountains. For most of the ride on Utah 24 up to the top of Capitol Reef NPS the hwy followed the Fremont River; but mostly hidden from my pics with its nearby vegetation. From Hanksville there was interesting geology, then the Fremont River formed a nice canyon. This was a nice uphill drive up the Fremont River Canyon. Then I entered Capitol Reef NPS and there was not the usual fee collection nor the handout pages of silly NPS rules. The Fremont River Canyon got taller with more vegetation. Then I got to the defunked Mormon town of Fruita with several miles of a real ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Blanding October 4th 2018

Scenic Hwy 95 runs West from Blanding to Hanksville in Utah. This is mostly BLM (Bureau of Land Management) with free and open camping. The middle section with the Colorado River is Glen Canyon Nat. Rec Area (US Park Service) that used to have free camping, but no longer. I made my usual stop at Clarks Market for supplies including fruits and their large collection of shasta sodas, with sugar and sugar free. From Blanding there are interesting geological features (mostly canyons) set in a scrub desert ecosystem. About thirteen miles West of Blanding is a major geological monocline called Comb Ridge that runs North-South for about 100 miles. South of Blanding on US 183 Comb Ridge is visible, but smaller, with a good parking space to get off the hwy. At Utah Hwy 95 Comb ... read more

Driving Southbound on US Hwy 191 from Moab (and Needles Overlook) I reached the road construction project near Church Rock. Then about 25 miles South of Church Rock I reached Monticello where I topped off with petro and ice. I turned West on Abajo Drive, that after leaving town turned into County Road 079. Then I quickly entered into the Manti-La Sal National Forest. Note: The La Sal Mts and the Abajo Mts are in the La Sal District of this combined National Forest. With the Manti District far away from here and just South of Salt Lake City, Utah; I feel that soon the La Sal and Manti Districts will separate into two independent National Forests. Not far away I took a left (South) turn going up the Abajo Mts. This was still CR 079, ... read more
